Book Notable Women of Modern China

Download or read book Notable Women of Modern China written by Margaret E. Burton and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now an ardent advocate of natural feet, she often tells of her trials as a pioneer of the movement in Fuhkien province. "That I have the distinction of being the first girl who did not have her feet bound, is due to no effort of mine," she says, "for the neighbour women used to say, 'Rather a nice girl, but those feet!' 'Rather a bright girl, but those feet, ' and 'Those feet, ' 'Those feet' was all I heard, until I was ashamed to be seem."-from "Dr. H King Eng"In 1909, American missionary Margaret Burton traveled to China, where she met and befriended many professional women-but when she returned home, she was stunned to discover that many of her fellow Americans had no idea that such educated, accomplished women were to be found in Asia. So she set out, in this 1912 book, to introduce Westerners to a few extraordinary Chinese women, pioneers who defied longstanding cultural traditions-like the forced hobbling of foot-binding and the second-class status of women-to blaze new trails of achievement as doctors and missionaries. This is a fascinating look at women who succeeded against the longest of odds.American writer MARGARET ERNESTINE BURTON (b. 1885) also wrote The Education of Women in China (1911) and The Education of Women in Japan (1914).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dreams of Flight, Fran Martin explores how young Chinese women negotiate competing pressures on their identity while studying abroad. On one hand, unmarried middle-class women in the single-child generations are encouraged to develop themselves as professional human capital through international education, molding themselves into independent, cosmopolitan, career-oriented individuals. On the other, strong neotraditionalist state, social, and familial pressures of the post-Mao era push them back toward marriage and family by age thirty. Martin examines these women’s motivations for studying in Australia and traces their embodied and emotional experiences of urban life, social media worlds, work in low-skilled and professional jobs, romantic relationships, religion, Chinese patriotism, and changed self-understanding after study abroad. Martin illustrates how emerging forms of gender, class, and mobility fundamentally transform the basis of identity for a whole generation of Chinese women.

The startlingly rapid changes which have occurred within the last few years have brought thoughtful people everywhere to a realization of the fact that the great awakened nations of the Orient will play a by no means unimportant part in determining the trend of events in the twentieth century, and even in the years which lie beyond it. Few things are of such vital interest in our time as the forces which are moulding the life of these nations and determining the char acter of the influence which they will exert. Book Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture

Download or read book Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture written by Sarah Handler and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese classical furniture is esteemed throughout the world for its beauty, functionalism, and influence on contemporary design aesthetics. Sarah Handler's stunningly illustrated volume traces Chinese hardwood furniture from its earliest origins in the Shang dynasty (c. 1500 to c. 1050 B.C.) to the present. She offers a fascinating and poetic view of Chinese furniture as functional sculpture, a fine art alongside the other Chinese arts of calligraphy, architecture, painting, and literature. Handler, a widely respected scholar of Chinese furniture, uses her knowledge of Chinese social, political, and economic history to provide a backdrop for understanding the many nuances of this art form. Drawing on literary and visual evidence from excavated materials, written texts, paintings, prints, and engravings, she discusses how people lived, their notions of hierarchy, and their perceptions of space. Her descriptions of historical developments, such as the shift from mats to chairs, evoke the psychological and sociological ramifications. The invention of a distinctive way to support and contain people and things within the household is one of China's singular contributions, says Handler. With more than three hundred exquisite illustrations, many in color, Handler's comprehensive study reveals "the magical totality of Chinese classical furniture, from its rich surfaces and shrewd proportions down to the austere soul of art that resides in the hardwood interiors." Austere Luminosity recognizes Chinese classical furniture as one of China's premier arts, unique in the furniture traditions of the world.

Book Exemplary Women of Early China

Download or read book Exemplary Women of Early China written by Anne Behnke Kinney and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When should a woman disobey her father, contradict her husband, or shape the policy of a ruler? According to the Lienü zhuan, or Categorized Biographies of Women, it is not only appropriate but necessary for women to offer counsel when fathers, husbands, sons, and rulers stray from virtue. The earliest Chinese text devoted to the moral education of women, the Lienü zhuan was compiled by Liu Xiang (79–8 B.C.E.) at the end of the Han dynasty (202 B.C.E.–9 C.E.) and recounts the deeds of both virtuous and wicked women. Informed by early legends, fictionalized historical accounts, and formal speeches on statecraft, the text taught generations of Chinese women to cultivate filial piety and maternal kindness and undertake such practices as suicide and self-mutilation to preserve chastity and reform wayward men. The Lienü zhuan’s stories inspired artists for a millennium and found their way into local and dynastic histories. An innovative work for its time, the text remains a critical tool for mapping women’s social, political, and domestic roles at a formative time in China’s development.
