Download or read book Commitment to Full Employment written by Aaron W. Warner and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on 2000-08-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 15 papers collected in this book encompass important macroeconomic theories and policies espoused by 1996 Nobel laureate economist Willaim S. Vickrey and his associates. Vickrey wrote a number of papers in the last few years of his life elucidating his commitment to full employment as a prerequisite for a decent standard of living for all. Drawing on the foundation of Vickrey's work, the contributors expand and elaborate on issues relative to full employment theory and policy, and on related macro-policy issues. This accessible book includes two previously unpublished Vickrey papers, a foreword by Robert Heilbroner, and keynote papers by Paul Davidson and James K. Gailbraith. It is directed toward students and policy makers interested in macroeconomic theory, employment policy, and political economy

Book A Theory of Full Employment

Download or read book A Theory of Full Employment written by Y.S. Brenner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has three purposes. First, to convince professional economists who study the behaviour of the economic system as a whole that they must re-examine some of the assumptions behind the reigning economic theories. Second, to explain to the general public why the currently fashionable economic policies cannot solve the problem of massive long term unemployment. Third, to show that if people's political engagement is revived there is hope for escaping from the economic morass and moral wasteland into which, ever since the 1970s, the fashionable policies have been leading us. To elucidate the theoretical problem the authors pass in review several recent structural developments and consider their effect on the economy. To encourage renewed public political engagement they draw attention to the risks involved in allowing things to drift on in the present direction. The avowed purpose of the book imposes the need to present it in a manner accessible at once to professional macroeconomists and to a wider public ofpeople concerned about today's malaise, politicians, sociologists or philosophers and others. This imposes the need not to encumber readers with the customary glut of academic references in the text, and to refer only to the best known and politically most influential theories and to authors who are also widely known to people who are not professional economists.

Book Economic Dignity

Download or read book Economic Dignity written by Gene Sperling and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Timely and important . . . It should be our North Star for the recovery and beyond.” —Hillary Clinton “Sperling makes a forceful case that only by speaking to matters of the spirit can liberals root their belief in economic justice in people’s deepest aspirations—in their sense of purpose and self-worth.” —The New York Times When Gene Sperling was in charge of coordinating economic policy in the Obama White House, he found himself surprised when serious people in Washington told him that the Obama focus on health care was a distraction because it was “not focused on the economy.” How, he asked, was the fear felt by millions of Americans of being one serious illness away from financial ruin not considered an economic issue? Too often, Sperling found that we measured economic success by metrics like GDP instead of whether the economy was succeeding in lifting up the sense of meaning, purpose, fulfillment, and security of people. In Economic Dignity, Sperling frames the way forward in a time of wrenching change and offers a vision of an economy whose guiding light is the promotion of dignity for all Americans.
