Book Crisis Era European Integration

Download or read book Crisis Era European Integration written by Jakša Puljiz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2023 marked the tenth anniversary of Croatia’s membership of the European Union, the last acceding country to the EU, and thus represents a fitting opportunity to explore the political, economic and social dimensions of this tremendous transformation. This book examines how Croatia has changed over the last ten years and looks at the driving forces as well as the obstacles on its post-accession path of Europeanisation. The book argues that the Croatian case has special importance given that the last decade of European integration has arguably been the most challenging one yet. It started with the Eurozone-wide sovereign debt crisis and ended with the economic hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s aggression on Ukraine. Such demanding circumstances where agenda was often defined in an ad hoc way posed a huge test for Croatia’s governmental capacity. The book provides answers to the question of how successful Croatian policymakers were in dealing with the crises-related challanges and other needed adaptations. The book explores how EU membership has affected the design and implementation of selected national public policies, the functioning of governing institutions and patterns of cooperation between main social actors. Expert contributors analyse the impact of the EU membership in two principal areas: political and economic, with individual chapters addressing relevant topics. The book is intended for researchers, academics and students interested in these issues, as well as policymakers, entrepreneurs and lobbyists concerned with European integration.

Book Croatia and the European Union

Download or read book Croatia and the European Union written by Pero Maldini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accession of Croatia to the EU marked the end of a long and arduous period of transition. Croatia had to meet significantly higher criteria than previous states with suspicion and concerns among existing members about further enlargement increasing. Meanwhile initially strong public support in Croatia declined as inconsistencies in EU policy, entry criteria and problems caused by the economic crisis all combined with fears about the loss of national identity and the ability to realize national interests. The successful Croatian accession to the EU in 2013 shows that, despite concerns on both sides, the EU continues to have meaning and significance and that membership remains highly desirable. Through nine mutually interrelated chapters the contributors speak not only about the political and social situation in Croatia, but also prospects for the European Union itself.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: -, University of Southern Denmark, language: English, abstract: The EU integration process is a complex process which introduces many economical and social changes. The new introduced member state is willing to integrate and adapt to the EU's "blueprint". On one side this process brings a lot of benefits; such as abolishment of borders, new job possibilities and in general a chance for a better economy and social wealth. But on the other side it also means that individuality and identity need to play secondary role. The capital market is a very important fundament in a national economy. The influence of an EU accession on the capital market and its main index, is the essence of this thesis. The CROBEX, Croatia's main index, will be the investigation instrument, the youngest since Croatia is the youngest member in the EU. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part will introduce the fundamentals of the financial market and the complexity of the EU accession progress. Further the complexity of investors reaction and interpretation is made, by presenting different types of events which can influence the stock market. The two main integration categories, which is partly the effect of the EU accession, are presented at the end of this part. The second part presents the main content of this thesis, Croatia. The process of its EU accession and current economical situation is presented firstly. Followed by an insight of its financial market, the thesis finishes with the analysis of how the EU accession of Croatia did influence its index CROBEX.

Book excerpt: Croatia, a founding member of the former Republic of Yugoslavia and a current member of the European Union (EU), is a high-income country in Europe and Central Asia. Given that high quality financial reporting promotes good corporate governance, reduces uncertainty and risk, can help to lower the cost of capital, and boosts investor confidence, it will play a critical role in the country's strategy to champion private sector led growth for economic development. Croatia's preparation to join the EU required reform of its corporate financial reporting framework and practices, among other things, and laid the foundation for enhanced financial reporting and increased transparency. Although the country's accession to the EU on July 1, 2013 was a single historical point in time, it encapsulated years of transformation of the statutory and institutional framework in every aspect of the economic, social, and political spheres of the country. The purpose of this report, which focuses on Croatia's adoption and implementation of the corporate financial reporting aspects of the acquis', company law, is to enhance understanding of how successful transitions work in practice, that is, what makes some reforms succeed where others fail. It attempts to answer questions such as: what happens when countries adopt international standards; what issues arise when one tries to merge differing legal traditions; how to achieve reform when there are capacity constraints and key implementing institutions are missing; what are the different strategies that can be used during various phases of a reform process; and, more generally, what factors encourage failure or lead to success?
