Book Ecology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles J. Krebs
  • Publisher : Benjamin-Cummings Publishing Company
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780321068798
  • Pages : 695 pages

Download or read book Ecology written by Charles J. Krebs and published by Benjamin-Cummings Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling majors ecology book continues to present ecology as a series of problems for readers to critically analyze. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. The field package also includes The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa. For college instructors and students.

  • Author : Marcelo Hernán Cassini
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-02
  • ISBN : 1461464153

Download or read book Distribution Ecology written by Marcelo Hernán Cassini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a set of approaches to the study of individual-species ecology based on the analysis of spatial variations of abundance. Distribution ecology assumes that ecological phenomena can be understood when analyzing the extrinsic (environmental) or intrinsic (physiological constraints, population mechanisms) that correlate with this spatial variation. Ecological processes depend on geographical scales, so their analysis requires following environmental heterogeneity. At small scales, the effects of biotic factors of ecosystems are strong, while at large scales, abiotic factors such as climate, govern ecological functioning. Responses of organisms also depend on scales: at small scales, adaptations dominate, i.e. the ability of organisms to respond adaptively using habitat decision rules that maximize their fitness; at large scales, limiting traits dominate, i.e., tolerance ranges to environmental conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem management has emerged in the past several years as the new paradigm for managing public and private land. It combines the principles of ecosystem-level ecology with the policy requirements of resource and public land management. This collection of selected readings will serve as an introduction to the concepts of biological diversity, ecological process, biotic integrity, and ecological sustainability that underlie ecosystem management.

Book Design and Evaluation of a Directional Antenna for Ocean Buoys

Download or read book Design and Evaluation of a Directional Antenna for Ocean Buoys written by Daniel E. Frye and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system concept has been developed by Viasat, Inc. and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for improving the data telemetry bandwidth available on ocean buoys. This concept utilizes existing communications satellites as data relay stations and mechanically steered antenna arrays to achieve increased data rates and improved power efficiency needed for ocean applications. This report describes an initial feasibility and design study to determine if a mechanically steered antenna array can meet the requirements of open ocean buoy applications. To meet the system requirements, an 18-element microstrip antenna (9-element transmit, 9-element receive) was designed and fabricated under subcontract by Seavey Engineering Associates, Inc. It operates in the 4-6 GHz frequency band (C-band) and provides 14 dB of gain. The % power beamwidth is j150 in azimuth and elevation. This antenna design, in conjunction with a simple rotating mount, was used to evaluate the potential of this approach to keep a geostationary satellite in view when mounted on an ocean buoy. The evaluation is based on laboratory measurements using a magnetic compass and a small stepper motor to maintain antenna orientation while the complete assembly was rotated and tilted at speeds similar to what would be expected on an offshore buoy equipped with a stabilizing wind vane.

Book Predators and Parasitoids

Download or read book Predators and Parasitoids written by Opender Koul and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-03-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their natural enemies largely determine the population size and dynamic behavior of many plant-eating insects. Any reduction in enemy number can result in an insect outbreak. Applied biological control is thus one strategy for restoring functional biodiversity in many agroecosystems. Predators and Parasitoids addresses the role of natural enemies i
