Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Records of the Town of Providence, Vol. 15: Being the Providence Town Papers, Vol I. 1639 April 1682 Nos; 01-0367 Included among the papers herein printed are a number of Roger Williams' letters, making a valuable collection of the writings of the distinguished founder of these plantations. On account of their extreme value, and for the purpose of presenting them in as nearly their original condition as possible, the Commission ers have caused to be made photographic reproductions of some of them as fitting illustrations to the work as well as indicating generally the character and appear ance of the papers which are here printed. In printing this collection of papers the Commissioners have followed the method of procedure which they early adopted in perpetuating the early records. They believe that all the earliest records should be permanently preserved by printing, and in following this method it has been necessary to make the series of volumes cover a variety of records. In this way the Commissioners have pre served ih type the four earliest books of records, these containing all the proceed ings of the town before any classification of records had been made. Following this was printed the first book of Wills in existence, then the town meeting and the town council records were printed, and next preceding this volume the first book used for the recording of land evidences. With the printing of this volume all of the earliest records of the town are now in print. It may be convenient to state that the work which the Commissioners have been engaged upon for several years past was authorized by the following resolution of the City Council of Providence, approved March 6, 1891. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Records of the Town of Providence, Vol. 7: Being Part of Will Book No; 1 Otherwise Called the First Booke for Prouidence Towne Council Perticular Vse In the printing of this volume the same signs have been used as in former volumes, and for convenience the explanations thereof are repeated here. The figures at the top of the pages, and enclosed in brackets, indicate the paging of this present volume. The heavy figures enclosed in brackets represent the paging of the original book as it now stands. This mark l shows the beginning and end of interlineations in the original. Words or letters printed in parentheses are so found in the original. Brackets enclosing blank space, thus, [ ] signify that something is missing, or illegible in the original. The sign is used to represent a contraction or double letter, which, in the original, stands for pr, and is used as the representative of syllables containing those letters with a vowel. In very many cases the marks or signs manual made by illiterate persons to instruments, in lieu of their own proper written signatures, are reproduced in fac-simile on the records by the recording officer, but in print in this volume these signs are usually represented by an X, being the conventional sign commonly used for that purpose. Carpenter, and Edward Field, are hereby appointed Record Commissioners, who shall serve without compensa tion, for the purpose of collecting and printing the early records Of the town of Providence, and said commissioners are hereby authorized to expend the sum of one thousand dollars for the collecting and printing said records, said sum to be charged to the appropriation for printing. The book which is herewith presented in type is designated as Deed Book No. And the original is in the custody of the Recorder of Deeds of the City of Providence. It is the first volume which was particularly used for the entry of land evidences and similar documents, and marks a period when the growth of the town demanded a more systematic method of keeping its records. In printing this volume the Commissioners have departed somewhat from the form and appearance of the previous volumes of the Early Records, although outwardly it is in size the same. The large amount of original material herein perpetuated in type, consisting mostly of deeds, made it necessary, in order to avoid undue bulk, to include more matter upon a page, and to reduce the weight though not the quality of the paper. The records of the Town Meeting terminate at Page 157 i original, and at page 53 in this book; the remainder of the original containing enrollments of deeds, births, marriages and deaths, together with other miscellaneous records. As will be noticed, the last date of a Town Meeting is on the 16th of February, 1675, and it is the last record of such a meeting until the year 1692. Commencing with that year the records of the Town Meeting and the Town Council were kept separately, and as stated in the preface to Volume III, there are no records of meetings for town purposes in the city's possession covering the seventeen years between those two dates. For convenience, the following explanation is here repeated to save the trouble of referring to the preceding volumes. Download or read book The Early Records of the Town of Providence Vol 5 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Records of the Town of Providence, Vol. 5: Being Part of the Third Book of the Town of Providence Otherwise Called the Book With Brass Claps This printed volume completes the records contained in the third manuscript book, entitled "Third Book Town of Providence A and B," otherwise called "The Book with Brass Clasps." It also completes the series of books that were in use for the earliest records of the town, and which were designated by names suggested evidently by their appearance and condition, such as, "The long old book with parchment cover," "The old burnt book," and "The Book with Brass Clasps." The commissioners are now able to say, as the result of their investigations, which are still in progress, that the records of the town meetings, between the years 1675 d 1692 can be supplied from the archives of the city in a larger measure than they had previously anticipated, and it is hoped that future revelations may still further abridge the gap so that when these records come to be printed the hiatus will prove to be inconsiderable. It will be remembered that the Transcript of 1800, so called, is a copy, more or less correct, made in that year, of the first three manuscript books of town records, which transcript and original books are in the custody of the Recorder of Deeds of the City of Providence.
