Book Young Children s Community Building in Action

Download or read book Young Children s Community Building in Action written by Louise Gwenneth Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the concepts of citizenship and community in relation to young children, this groundbreaking text examines the ways in which indigenous understandings and practices applied in early childhood settings in Australia and New Zealand encourage young children to demonstrate their care and concern for others and so, in turn, perceive themselves as part of a larger community. Young Children’s Community Building in Action acknowledges global variations in the meanings of early childhood education, of citizenship and community building, and challenges widespread invisibility and disregard of Indigenous communities. Through close observation and examination of early years settings in Australia and New Zealand, chapters demonstrate how practices guided by Aboriginal and Māori values support and nurture children’s personal and social development as individuals, and as citizens in a wider community. Exploring what young children’s citizenship learning and action looks like in practice, and how this may vary within and across communities, the book provides a powerful account of effective pedagogical approaches which have been long excluded from mainstream dialogues. Written for researchers and students of early childhood education and care, this book provides insight into what citizenship can be for young children, and how Indigenous cultural values shape ways of knowing, being, doing and relating.

Book Perspectives from Young Children on the Margins

Download or read book Perspectives from Young Children on the Margins written by Jane Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of our apparently connected global environment, people are becoming less connected. Digital communication leads to fewer face-to-face engagements, and many young children are separated from their parents for extended periods. The post-truth phenomenon has resulted in mistrust between policymakers and the people they serve, whilst increased immigration has led to some rich countries adopting a protectionist stance that transforms collaboration into separatism. At its 2014 meeting, the European Early Childhood Education Research Association’s Young Children’s Perspectives Special Interest Group considered how these issues were affecting young children, particularly the many thousands entering Europe at that time as refugees and migrants escaping conflict in their home countries. Many of those displaced young children found themselves situated on the margins of their new contexts. The feeling of being ‘othered’ can be existential for any young child experiencing liminality, yet a sense of belonging is important for young children’s well-being and development of identity: the feeling of belonging lies at the core of social inclusion. This book, the idea for which arose out of this meeting, is drawn from leading edge empirical studies, and reveals the diverse experiences of young children’s marginalisation. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Early Childhood Education Research Journal.

Book The Relationship Between Early Childhood Education and Care ECEC and the Outcomes of Indigenous Children

Download or read book The Relationship Between Early Childhood Education and Care ECEC and the Outcomes of Indigenous Children written by Lilia Arcos Holzinger and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there is international evidence supporting the positive effects of early childhood education and care (ECEC), there is less research on its benefits for Indigenous children in Australia. This paper addresses this gap with data from the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) on the short and longer term impacts of ECEC on cognitive and developmental outcomes. It finds that effects of ECEC participation varied significantly across the three groups of outcomes analysed (reading and literacy, maths and abstract reasoning, and developmental) and between the two formal venues of ECEC provision (preschool and child care). Nonetheless, the overall findings support the benefits of participation and justify policies that aim to improve ECEC access for Indigenous children.

Book Literature Review Relating to the Current Context and Discourse Surrounding Indigenous Early Childhood Education School Readiness and Transition Programs to Primary School

Download or read book Literature Review Relating to the Current Context and Discourse Surrounding Indigenous Early Childhood Education School Readiness and Transition Programs to Primary School written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the educational experiences of Aboriginal Australians are often framed from a âdeficitâ perspective, whereby the failures of Indigenous people to engage with the mainstream educational system are seen as the âproblemâ, an alternative approach to Indigenous early childhood education discourse is preferable. This alternative approach highlights the strengths that many Aboriginal children possess when commencing school, strengths that may result from Indigenous child-rearing practices. Consequently, this literature review utilises a strengths-based perspective for Aboriginal early childhood education and school readiness, noting that Aboriginal children are frequently expected to adapt to a foreign educational system whereby school expectations differ from that of their home environment. The role that television can play in assisting Indigenous children to adapt to and understand Western school environments will be discussed in this review. However, it is important to acknowledge that transitioning to school is a holistic, relational process that occurs over a period of time before and after the very first school day, thus requiring not only children to be ready, but schools as well. The failures of some mainstream educational systems to adapt to the needs of Aboriginal children commencing school need to be acknowledged if Aboriginal children are to experience a successful transition to school. Ultimately, the main purpose of this literature review is to provide an overview about the factors that ensure an effective transition to school for Aboriginal children and the role that television can play in achieving it.
