Book The drawings of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne for his Natural History of the Gourds

Download or read book The drawings of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne for his Natural History of the Gourds written by Harry S. Paris and published by Publications scientifiques du Muséum. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this book makes available to a wide readership, not only to an educated audience, high-resolution reproductions of all the 258 paintings of gourds of the genus Cucurbita, figuring about a hundred cultivars, kept at the Bibliothèque centrale of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, made in the 18th century by the talentuous Antoine Nicolas Duchesne, of the Royal Garden in Versailles, a forerunner of genetics and evolution. This book by Dr. Harry Paris, a leading expert of Cucurbitaceae, is written both in English and French and is aimed at scientists (e.g., botanists, geneticists, agronomists, horticulturists, science historians) as well as more general readers including gardeners, above all those very numerous fond of cultivated plants, particularly of Cucurbitaceae. Its large format (320 x 440 mm), the diversity and magnificence of its plates and the beauty of its presentation will also attract bibliophiles. This volume is not only the first publication to contain Duchesne’s naming and classification of the three economically most important species of Cucurbita, it also contains Duchesne’s summary of his investigations with this genus. The plates are accompanied by reprinting of appropriate abstracts from Duchesne’s Essai sur l’histoire naturelle des courges together with, by Harry Paris, commentaries on the illustrations with an analysis of existing published and unpublished documents concerning these plates. As for his work on strawberries, here once again is stressed the unfailing tenaciousness and extraordinary sense of observation of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne coupled with quite original and premonitory evolutionary ideas.

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 29 1881

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 29 1881 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 1242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically. In 1881, Darwin published his final book, The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms. He reflected on reactions to his previous book, The Power of Movement in Plants, and worked on two papers for the Linnean Society on the action of carbonate of ammonia on plants. In this year, Darwin's elder brother, Erasmus, died, and a second grandchild, also named Erasmus, was born.

Book Genetics and Genomics of Cucurbitaceae

Download or read book Genetics and Genomics of Cucurbitaceae written by Rebecca Grumet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the current state of knowledge of the genetics and genomics of the agriculturally important Cucurbitaceae plant family, which includes crops such as watermelon, melon, cucumber, summer and winter squashes, pumpkins, and gourds. Recent years have resulted in tremendous increases in our knowledge of these species due to large scale genomic and transcriptomic studies and production of draft genomes for the four major species, Citrullus lanatus, Cucumis melo, Cucumis sativus, and Cucurbita spp. This text examines genetic resources and structural and functional genomics for each species group and across species groups. In addition, it explores genomic-informed understanding and commonalities in cucurbit biology with respect to vegetative growth, floral development and sex expression, fruit growth and development, and important fruit quality traits.

Book Linnaeus Natural History and the Circulation of Knowledge

Download or read book Linnaeus Natural History and the Circulation of Knowledge written by Hanna Hodacs and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) is inscribed in almost every flora and fauna published from the mid-eighteenth century onwards; in this respect he is virtually immortal. In this book a group of specialists argue for the need to re-centre Linnaean science and de-centre Linnaeus the man by exploring the ideas, practices and people connected to his taxonomic innovations. Contributors examine the various techniques, materials and methods that originated within the 'Linnaean workshop': paper technologies, publication strategies, and markets for specimens. Fresh analyses of the reception of Linnaeus's work in Paris, K nigsberg, Edinburgh and beyond offer a window on the local contexts of knowledge transfer, including new perspectives on the history of anthropology and stadial theory. The global implications and negotiated nature of these intellectual, social and material developments are further investigated in chapters tracing the experiences and encounters of Linnaean travellers in Africa, Latin America and South Asia. Through focusing on the circulation of Linnaean knowledge and placing it within the context of eighteenth-century globalization, authors provide innovative and important contributions to our understanding of the early modern history of science.

Book Charles Plumier 1646 1704 and His Drawings of French and Caribbean Fishes

Download or read book Charles Plumier 1646 1704 and His Drawings of French and Caribbean Fishes written by Theodore Wells Pietsch and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Les dessins de champignons de Claude Aubriet written by Xavier Carteret and published by French National Museum Natural History. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1730, noted painter and miniaturist Claude Aubriet created ninety-seven color plates that depicted a wide-range of mushrooms. Because of their high quality, the paintings were used by numerous scientists from the period, including Carl Linnaeus. In this book, Xavier Carteret and Aline Hamonou-Mahieu reproduce Aubriet's stunning images, describing the rarity of color illustrations of mushrooms before the end of the eighteenth century. They reveal that these drawings reflected the period's lack of understanding of fungi, when the structure, reproduction, and general existence of mushrooms remained a mystery. A welcome volume for mycologists and for fans of Aubriet, this book underlines the decisive role scientific illustration has played throughout history.

  • Author : D. Gledhill
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1989-06-15
  • ISBN : 9780521366755
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book The Names of Plants written by D. Gledhill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-06-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides both a handy reference to the scientific names of plants and a clearly written account of the ways in which the naming of plants has changed with time and why these changes were necessary. It deals with the problems of using common names for plants against the historical background of our increasing discrimination of kinds of plants. It then goes on to consider landmarks in the standardization of both common and 'scientific' names and the development of internationally agreed principles governing the format and use of names in botany, sylviculture, agriculture and horticulture. From the alphabetical list the reader may interpret the scientific names of plants from any part of the world. For this second edition a number of changes and corrections in both parts have been made. The author has attempted to keep the first part acceptable to the amateur gardener by resisting a temptation to make it a definite guide to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Others have done this already and with great clarity. Revision has allowed the inclusion of a brief comment on both synonymous and illegitimate botanical names and reference to recent attempts to accommodate the various traits and interests in the naming and names of cultivated plants.

Book excerpt: Ethnobotany: A Phytochemical Perspective explores the chemistry behind hundreds of plant medicines, dyes, fibers, flavors, poisons, insect repellants, and many other uses of botanicals. Bridging the gap between ethnobotany and chemistry, this book presents an introduction to botany, ethnobotany, and phytochemistry to clearly join these fields of study and highlight their importance in the discovery of botanical uses in modern industry and research. Part I. Ethnobotany, explores the history of plant exploration, current issues such as conservation and intellectual property rights, and a review of plant anatomy. An extensive section on plant taxonomy highlights particularly influential and economically important plants from across the plant kingdom. Part II. Phytochemistry, provides fundamentals of secondary metabolism, includes line drawings of biosynthetic pathways and chemical structures, and describes traditional and modern methods of plant extraction and analysis. The last section is devoted to the history of native plants and people and case studies on plants that changed the course of human history from five geographical regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Ocean. Throughout the entire book, vivid color photographs bring science to life, capturing the essence of human botanical knowledge and the beauty of the plant kingdom.
