Download or read book In Search of the Magic Theater written by Karla Huebner and published by Regal House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, the rather staid young cellist Sarah wonders, should her aunt rent their spare room to the perhaps unstable Kari Zilke? Like the nephew in Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf, Sarah finds herself taking an unexpected interest in the lodger, but she is unable to stop at providing a mere introduction to Kari's narrative of mid-life crisis and self-discovery, and develops her own more troubled tale of personal angst and growth, entwined with the account Kari herself purportedly left behind. Generational tensions, artistic collaborations, and even a romance steeped in Greek myth follow as Kari and Sarah pursue their very different creative paths in theater and music. And while Kari seems to blossom post-divorce, Sarah must grapple with the question of what the role of mothers, fathers, aunts, mentors, and male collaborators should be in her life as a young musician.

Download or read book The Choice of Magic written by Michael G. Manning and published by Michael Manning. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite—a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses. But this will change, for the greatest power comes with knowledge, and the deeper teachings of wizardry have not been utterly lost. The last wizard of the old tradition still survives in solitude, nursing tired grudges and waiting for death. His passing might have gone unnoticed, but for the imposition of a youth too stubborn to accept his refusal to take an apprentice. With a new student comes new hope, and that hope has caused old powers to stir again. That the world will change is inevitable, but the shape of the future is anything but certain.
Download or read book Performing Dark Arts written by Michael Mangan and published by Intellect (UK). This book was released on 2007 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magic and conjuring inhabit the boundaries and the borderlands of performance. The conjuror s act of demonstrating the apparently impossible, the uncanny, the marvellous, or the grotesque challenges the spectator's sense of reality. It brings him or her up against their own assumptions about how the world works; at its most extreme, it asks the spectator to re-evaluate his or her sense of the limits of the human. Performing Dark Arts is an exploration of the paradox of the conjuror, the actor who pretends to be a magician. It aims to illuminate the history of conjuring by examining it in the context of performance studies, and to throw light on aspects of performance studies by testing them against the art of conjuring. The book examines not only the performances of individual magicians from Dedi to David Blaine, but also the broader cultural contexts in which their performances were received, and the meanings which they have attracted.
Download or read book Theatre Magic and Philosophy written by Gabriela Dragnea Horvath and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing Shakespeare's views on theatre and magic and John Dee's concerns with philosophy and magic in the light of the Italian version of philosophia perennis (mainly Marsilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola and Giordano Bruno), this book offers a new perspective on the Italian-English cultural dialogue at the Renaissance and its contribution to intellectual history. In an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, it investigates the structural commonalities of theatre and magic as contiguous to the foundational concepts of perennial philosophy, and explores the idea that the Italian thinkers informed not only natural philosophy and experimentation in England, but also Shakespeare's theatre. The first full length project to consider Shakespeare and John Dee in juxtaposition, this study brings textual and contextual evidence that Gonzalo, an honest old Counsellor in The Tempest, is a plausible theatrical representation of John Dee. At the same time, it places John Dee in the tradition of the philosophia perennis-accounting for what appears to the modern scholar the conflicting nature of his faith and his scientific mind, his powerful fantasy and his need for order and rigor-and clarifies Edward Kelly's role and creative participation in the scrying sessions, regarding him as co-author of the dramatic episodes reported in Dee's spiritual diaries. Finally, it connects the Enochian/Angelic language to the myth of the Adamic language at the core of Italian philosophy and brings evidence that the Enochian is an artificial language originated by applying creatively the analytical instruments of text hermeneutics used in the Cabala.

Book excerpt: America's premier female Illusionist, Lyn Dillies, adds another DIMENSION to her sparkling career: YOUR VOTE IS MAGIC!, the book based on the groundbreaking illusion she conjured up to deliver a powerful message to get out the vote. At a rally in New Bedford, Massachusetts before the 2008 Presidential election, Lyn produced a live elephant and a live donkey, (the two party mascots) "out of thin air!" The illusion impressively delivered the non-partisan message that YOUR VOTE IS MAGIC! and prompted a large voter registration. In the book that TELLS ALL (Almost) . . . Lyn REVEALS just how important your vote really is! On a personal basis, Lyn describes HOW and WHY she created the illusion, overcoming seemingly daunting obstacles. Challenges are nothing new to Lyn. She is well known for imaginative, unique programs and illlusions. The book, YOUR VOTE IS MAGIC! emphasizes Lyn's personal philosophy: With enough determination, anything is possible. YOUR VOTE IS MAGIC! contains many visuals that enrich the story, including photos of the animal "stars" and the preparations for the illusion. There are provocative quotes about voting from famous folk; whimsical political cartoons; and an absorbing review of the successful woman's suffrage movement. As the title implies, it's truly a MAGICAL COMBINATION of illusion and reality and delivers a colorful, persuasive message to first-time voters. This book will be happily passed along to NEW GENERATIONS of voters as they begin their journey to responsible citizenship.

Download or read book Drama High written by Michael Sokolove and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the NBC TV series "Rise," starring Josh Radnor, Auli'i Cravalho, and Rosie Perez — the incredible and true story of an extraordinary drama teacher who has changed the lives of thousands of students and inspired a town. By the author of The Last Temptation of Rick Pitino. Why would the multimillionaire producer of Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon take his limo from Manhattan to the struggling former steel town of Levittown, Pennsylvania, to see a high school production of Les Misérables? To see the show performed by the astoundingly successful theater company at Harry S Truman High School, run by its legendary director, Lou Volpe. Broadway turns to Truman High when trying out controversial shows such as Rent and Spring Awakening before they move on to high school theater programs across the nation. Volpe’s students from this blue-collar town go on to become Emmy-winning producers, entertainment executives, newscasters, and community-theater founders. Michael Sokolove, a Levittown native and former student of Volpe’s, chronicles the drama director’s last school years and follows a group of student actors as they work through riveting dramas both on and off the stage. This is a story of an economically depressed but proud town finding hope in a gifted teacher and the magic of theater.
