In the words 'unity' and 'freedom' is to be found the key to Fichte's entire philosophical system. To formulate a philosophy whose every part should radiate from a single, absolute principle, was the end to the attainment of which his keen constructive intellect aspired. To vindicate the moral freedom of the individual was the imperative demand of his fervent ethical nature. To satisfy this demand of logical thought on the one hand, and of moral impulse on the other, is his constant effort; and, although he sometimes seems to lose himself in a bewildering maze of 'deductions' and 'proofs,' he invariably closes the discussion in hand with one or both of these ends consciously in view. It was the strength of his desire for a monistic system of thought, that led him while yet a theological student, to accept Spinozism, with its sweeping determinism, even though the longings of his moral nature cried out against it. It was the satisfaction of this hitherto unsatisfied longing that led him to rejoice so greatly in his discovery of the "new gospel" of the Kantian philosophy, which, in its underlying principles, was to satisfy both the logical demand for unity and the ethical longing for freedom. Whether Fichte was really as successful as he himself thought he was, in constructing a system of philosophy that should contain a single, fundamental principle, and, whether in this claim to unity in all his philosophical treatises, he was always consistent with himself, it is not within the province of this study to determine. We have only to show, as clearly as we may be able to do, what Fichte's doctrine of freedom really was, and then to examine the tenability of the theory. This being our purpose, we shall introduce so much, and only so much of his metaphysical thought as may be helpful in the understanding of the subject in hand. We shall avoid, so far as possible, the peculiarly technical and difficult terminology of the author, and, where this is impossible, we shall try to translate this terminology into such other terms as, while they may lay little claim to being transcendental, may yet lay some claim to being perspicuous.

Due to early rationalist convictions, Fichte is as much concerned with reconciling freedom with a logical and a theological determinism as he is with a causal determinism. He sees in Kant’s novel concept of a pure practical reason a new form of rationalism, one consisting of a system of moral rather than natural necessitating grounds. At the same time, he adopts a more radically libertarian stance on free will than Kant. Every member in a sequence of free actions is a “first and absolute member” and could be other than it is given the same antecedent natural events and natural laws. The interest of Fichte as a theorist of freedom lies in how he brings together freedom and predetermination in a way that challenges our assumption about their mutual exclusivity. The book provides an overview of Fichte’s philosophical system—the so-called “Doctrine of Science”—from 1793-1800 with the aim of contextualizing his theory of free agency and destiny. In doing so, it sheds light on how consideration of these issues in turn shapes the system. This Element offers a new interpretation of Kant's theory against the backdrop of this controversy. It argues that Kant was a consistent proponent of the claim that the moral law is the causal law of a free will, and that the supposed ability of free will to choose indifferently between options is an empty concept. Freedom, for Kant, is a power to initiate action from oneself, and the only way to exercise this power is through the law of one's own will, the moral law. Immoral action is not thereby rendered impossible, but it also does not express a genuine ability.

The book sets out to examine as yet unexhausted ways to boost the resilience of the principle of liberalism. Critically reviewing the last 200 years of the philosophy of freedom, it revises the principle of liberty in order to revive it. It discusses many different aspects that fall under its three main topics: the metaphysics of freedom, quantitative freedom and qualitative freedom. Open societies worldwide have come under increasing pressure in the last decades. The belief that politics and markets fare best when guided by the principle of liberty presently faces multiple challenges such as terrorism, climate warming, inequality, populism, and financial crises. In the view of its critics, the idea of freedom no longer offers adequate guidance to meet these challenges and should be partially corrected or even entirely replaced by countervailing values. Against the reduction of freedom to the merely quantitative question as to how much liberties individuals call their own, this book draws attention to the qualitative concerns which and whose opportunities society should foster. It argues that, correctly understood, the idea of liberty commits us to defend as well as advance the freedom of each and every world citizen.
