Download or read book Advaita Ved nta written by Eliot Deutsch and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1980-12-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advaita Vedānta is the most important philosophical system in India. It involves a discipline of spiritual experience as well as a technical philosophy, and since the time of Samkara in the ninth century some of the greatest intellects in India have contributed to its development. In his reconstruction of Advaita Vedānta, Eliot Deutsch has lifted the system out of its historical/cultural context and has concentrated attention on those ideas which have enduring philosophical value. He has sought to formulate systematically one's understanding of what is of universal philosophical interest in Vedantic thought. Professor Deutsch's work covers the basic metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical ideas of Vedānta. Students and scholars of Western as well as of Indian philosophy will be interested in the lucid, organized manner in which the material is presented and in the fresh interpretations given. The book is written in a critical rather than simply "pious" spirit and should thus also be of interest to anyone interested in deepening his or her appreciation and understanding of the richness of Indian thought.

Book abdapram a Word and Knowledge

Download or read book abdapram a Word and Knowledge written by P.P. Bilimoria and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-07-31 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr PurusQttama Bilimoria's book on sabdapramaIJa is an important one, and so is likely to arouse much controversy. I am pleased to be able to write a Foreword to this book, at a stage in my philosophical thinking when my own interests have been turning towards the thesis of sabdapramaIJa as the basis of Hindu religious and philosophical tradition. Dr Bilimoria offers many novel interpretations of classical Hindu theories about language, meaning, understanding and knowing. These interpretations draw upon the conceptual resources of contemporary analytic and phenomenological philosophies, without sacrificing the authentIcity that can arise only out of philologically grounded scholarship. He raises many issues, and claims to have resolved some of them. Certainly, he advances the overall discussion, and this is the best one could hope for in writing on a topic to which the best minds of antiquity and modern times have applied themselves. In this Foreword, I wish to focus on one of the issues which I have raised on earlier occasions, and on which Dr Bilimoria has several important things to say. The issue is: is sabdabodha eo ipso a linguistic knowing, i. e. , sabdapramll, or does Sabdabodha amount to knowing only when certain specifiable conditions are satisfied. It the second alternative be accepted, these additional conditions could not be the same as the familiar Ilsatti (contiguity), yogyata (semantic fitness), dka;,k~ll (expectancy) and tlltparya (intention), for these are, on the theory, conditions of sabdabodha itself.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, yet entertaining introduction to Advaita, the non-dual philosophy which provides a completely reasonable explanation for who we are and the nature of the universe. There are many self-help approaches promising enlightenment and happiness but most are illogical and lack any proven capability. Advaita has a guru-disciple tradition stretching back for several thousand years and can guarantee the sincere seeker a progressive path to self-realization. A 21st Century treatment of this ancient eastern philosophy, this book addresses all of the issues that are covered by both traditional teachers from the lineage of Shankara and by modern satsang teaching and Direct Path methods stemming from Ramana Maharshi and Krishna Menon. Topics are explained in an accessible and readable manner, using amusing quotations and stories along with an abundance of metaphors from a wide variety of sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doctrine of Maya: In the Philosophy of the Vedanta is author Prabhu Dutt Shastri's work examining the Upanishads. A particularly talented writer, Shastri was a religious scholar who taught at universities across the world and was a research scholar with the Government of India. The book opens with a brief preface from the author before diving into the subject matter. Chapter one is the author's introduction to the concept of Maya. Shastri begins at the most obvious starting point, which is laying out at definitive definition of the word Maya, a term that is frequently misunderstood. Having established this definition, the author proceeds to an examination of the concept of the doctrine of Maya. The author's central thesis is that the idea of Maya far predates the naming of the doctrine. Shastri examines the text of the Rig Veda and the Upanishads to build this argument. The final chapter of the book is devoted to responding to objections to the doctrine of Maya. The author selects several prominent arguments opposing the doctrine and attempts to correct the misunderstandings present in these disagreements. The Doctrine of Maya is a relatively brief and surprisingly readable treatment of the subject matter. Shastri's prose is simple and elegant. He writes with a definitive voice that guides the reader to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Religious studies students and scholars, as well as anybody interested in Vedic philosophy, will likely find this to be an illuminating and educational read. Prabhu Dutt Shastri's The Doctrine of Maya: In the Philosophy of the Vedanta is a tremendous addition to anybody's library of religious, spiritual, and philosophical texts. It is a concise examination of Maya that will only serve to expand the reader's knowledge of the subject while providing some potentially unexpected entertainment. Book excerpt: Advaita Vedanta is one of the most refined philosophical pearls of Hinduism. It is reserved for seekers of Truth that want to know their own essence and aspire to liberation, or mok?a. He proposes to us the path of knowledge called Jñ?na-yoga, which much more than a theory or a doctrine, it is an existential view. Jñ?na is knowing oneself as Brahman and realizing one's reality as the transcendental Self, beyond time and space. Its main teaching is self-inquiry: "Who am I?" This question is an expression of the highest and noblest rebellion. Vedanta restores our dignity and accepts us as the only authority about who we are.Prabhuji presents the main principles for taking the first steps on this path. Rather than offering information, explanations, or answers, he inspires us to inquire, to doubt, and to investigate our own essence. He tells us that every effort to achieve enlightenment is superfluous because we already are what we aspire to be and we will realize it by turning our attention to consciousness and simply Being the Self...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive exposition of Vedanta Desika`s Satadusani, a polemical classic of Visistadvaita Vedanta, devoted to the criticism of the doctrines of Advaita Vedanta. The thought-provoking arguments found in the Sixty-six Vedas of the original text are brought together, analysed and discussed in a systematic manner under eight broad headings: Pramanas Perception; Consciousness; Individual self; Brahman; Universe; Avidya; Sadhana and Mukti. In presenting the dialectics of Vedanta Desika in a vigorous and scholastic form the author deals with numerous issues that the Vadas raise--epistemological, ontological, religious, and ethical. Thought the issues are many, each discussing a specific problem, they are ultimately directed to refute the central doctrine of Advaita, viz., that Brahman which is pure consciousness devoid of all determinations, constitutes the sole Reality and every thing else is illusory. While carefully tracing the fundamental differences between the two systems of Vedanta, he points out that the differences are mostly due to the difference in the stand-points they adopt.Faithfully conforming to the original in letter and spirit, this work will serve as a useful introduction to the study of the Sribhasya of Ramanuja. A distincy contribution to the study of classical Hindu thought, this book should be of interest to students of Philosophy in general and Vedanta in particular.

Book The Advaita Tradition in Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Advaita Tradition in Indian Philosophy written by Candradhara Śarmā and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1996 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is a comparative and critical study of Shunyavada, Vijnanavada, Advaita Vedanta and Kashmira Shaivism, the four main systems of Advaitavada or spiritual non-dualism which has been the most celebrated tradition in Indian philosophy. It is based on the author s study of original sources and when dealing with fundamental issues original texts are either quoted or referred to. The points of similarity and of difference among these systems are discussed in detail and with great clarity. Professor Sharma, with his unique gift of expressing abstruse metaphysical thoughts in a clear language, has eminently succeeded in correcting some misconceptions and in clarifying many difficult and obscure points about these systems. This work is indeed a masterly survey of Mahayana Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta and kashmira Shaivism which brings into rominence the author s original contributions some of which are of outstanding merit for a correct appreciation of the relation among these systems. The Advaita Tradition in Indian Philosophy will be found eminently useful by the students of philosophy in universities and colleges and also by all those who are interested in Buddhism, Vedanta and Kashmira Shaivism and who want a clear and accurate exposition of the development of the Advaita tradition in Indian philosophical thought.
