Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Endless Punishment AT the request of the editor of the North American Review, the author of this book prepared an argument in defence of the doctrine of Endless Punishment, which was published in the number of that periodical for February, 1885. It was agreed that the writer should have the right to republish it at a future time. Only the rational argument was presented in the article. The author now reproduces it, adding the Biblical argument, and a brief historical sketch. Every doctrine has its day to be attacked, and defended. Just now, that of Eternal Retribution is strenuously com bated, not only outside of the church, but to some extent within it. Whoever preaches it is said, by some, not to preach to the times - as if the sin of this time were privileged, and stood in a different relation to the law and judgment of God, from that of other times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Objections to the Doctrine of Endless Punishment The history of endless punishment is one of bloodshed, cruelty and crime. Heathenish in its ori gin, unsupported in its claims by reason, philosophy, and revelation, by the friendly aid of bigotry and superstition, it has worked its way down to the present day. This system has undergone various modifications with a view to make it acceptable to the people of different ages. Chameleon like, it changes its color as often as circumstances require. The wolf dressed in a lamb-skin is a wolf still. So of the svstem of endless punishment; when stripped of the transparent gauze in which its ad vocates strive to hide its deformities, it is the hydra headed monster, full of wrath and cruelty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endless Punishment: In the Very Words of Its Advocates In the following pages I wish to call the attention of the reader to some facts and consideration, which, though only preliminary in their nature, seem to me important, and, if duly weighed, must in some measure prepare the earnest inquirer for an intelligent and, I trust, candid study of the controversy now going on in Protestant Christendom, - and affecting in some degree even the Roman Church, - upon the question of universal salvation and endless punishment. In every aspect the subject is a momentous one, in which no man who believes in God and immortality can fail to take a profound interest, but to which a faith in the Christian religion adds a fresh importance by lifting us out of a narrow egoism, in which we are apt to indulge, and inspiring us with a broader and purer love for our fellow-men, and so making the welfare of every individual of our race dear to us, and an object of affectionate and earnest desire.
