Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

Book The Atonement in the Light of Nature and Revelation

Download or read book The Atonement in the Light of Nature and Revelation written by J. H. Waggoner and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that God's laws--as in the laws of any country--are the basis upon which all justice rests. In addition, the atonement of Christ does not conflict with the Ten Commandments or any other laws of God. This work is a critical and exhaustive treatise on the plan of salvation as revealed in the Scriptures, showing its harmony with the principles of justice and mercy, its consistency with reason, and its final results as affecting the destiny of the human race. By all who have faith in the power of the blood of Christ to clease from sin, the Atonementis considered to be the greeat central doctrine of the gospel. Many Christians, however, are asking if it is necessary to keep the Old Testament laws. J.H. Waggoner, in 1884, was concerned that Christians had deviated from the truth of the Atonement doctrine by not appealing to principles of reasonand law found in the Holy Scriptures. The Atonement of Christ never conflicts with the Commandments of God, and this book demonstrates that God's law - as in the laws of any country - is the basis upon which all justice rests.

Book The Scripture Doctrine of Atonement

Download or read book The Scripture Doctrine of Atonement written by Stephen West and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scripture Doctrine of Atonement: Proposed to Careful Examination Among the several doctrines of divine revelation, that of the Atonement holds a place of principal importance; and, has so evident a connection with the distinguishing doctrines of Christianity, that they will be found, on careful inquiry, to stand or fall with it. This lies at the bottom of that system of sentiments which principally distinguishes Christianity from mere natural religion. With this are connected the doctrines of the Divinity of Christ, justification by an imputed righteousness and the perpetuity of punishment in the future world. For, if the doctrine of Atonement be given up; that of the Divinity of Christ will no longer be maintained: As we can hardly believe that a God ever came into the world to perform a work which did not require the perfection and power of a God; or, that he come to reveal in words, and enforce by example, a system of doctrines, which might have been as perfectly revealed, and as completely exemplified, by a mere creature. Book Options on Atonement in Christian Thought

Download or read book Options on Atonement in Christian Thought written by Stephen Finlan and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his previous book, Problems with Atonement, Stephen Finlan compellingly argues that the doctrine of atonement has been more a stumbling block to a true understanding of the relationship between God and humanity than a genuine explanation of how we relate to God and God to us. Options on Atonement reprises these arguments briefly, then looks more closely at the solutions to the problem offered by a variety of modern interpreters. Finlan's focus in this volume is on revelation, on the gradual human absorption of and interpretation of revelation received from God, the maturing of human cultures, and especially the light shed by modern family systems psychology. At a time when public debates rage over the notion of evolution in the natural world, this book asserts that our understanding of divine revelation is likewise subject to evolution. If religion itself does not evolve, the author asserts, we are left only with an unsatisfactory choice: to remain mired in the past, or to repudiate all that is past, including our Scriptures. Will that be our choice? Or can we resolve to examine our traditions, including that of the atonement, in the light of new knowledge? Stephen Finlan chooses to do just that.
