Book The Divine Aspect of History Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Divine Aspect of History Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Rickards Mozley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Aspect of History, Vol. 1 The positive affirmation of this book lies in its vindication of the main current of Biblical teaching as unique in its spiritual truth, especially the teaching of Jesus of Nazareth; whom Christians are right in regarding as the revealer of the way into eternal life, and as the reconciler of God and man, and who was also (though this is not the way in which Christians commonly put it) the first of the sons of men to feel intimately his true filial relation to God, which relation he also taught us to believe as belonging to ourselves, and as capable of being realised by us if we trust God and pray to him with all our hearts. That Jesus is rightly called the Christ, or in other words the ruler of all mankind (which is what the title Christ implies) is also affirmed in this book; though it must be understood that the rule attributed to him lies in his attractive power, not in any external compulsion exercised or authorised by him. External com pulsion, though not always avoidable among men, is quite different from the government and the organisation which Spring from true religion. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Aspect of History, Vol. 2 of 2 It is now proper to remark that the scheme of belief presented to us in the Nicene creed has been received with real enthusiasm not only by Christian theologians, but by persons of singular ability and great freedom of thought, lay and not clerical, living in times which must be called modern, though of course not beyond the reach of ancient influences (as who would wish them to be?) The poet Milton in his later years did partly (by no means entirely) dissent from the Nicene creed; but his early poem On the. Morning of Christ's Nativity does so precisely express the doctrine of that creed, and in so lofty a style, that it will be well to quote its two opening stanzas (they are from the Introduction, not from the Ode): This is the month, and this the happy morn, Wherein the Son of Heaven's Eternal King, Of wedded Maid and Virgin Mother born, Our great redemption from above did bring; For so the holy sages once did sing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Origin of Christianity, Vol. 1 of 2: Deduced From Some of Those Evidences Which Are Not Founded on the Authenticity of Scripture I have sometimes tried to guess (of course without hope Of accuracy) what proportion the number Of books which defend the trail: of our religion may bear, to the multitude Of those which, assuming its divinity, explain and enforce its doctrines, promises, and precepts. Not that we could infer simply from these proportions, were they ascertained, which kind of addition is now the mere (or, should I say, the less likely to do good. For another estimate must enter into the calculation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 of 2 A still further analogy may be predicated. The starry heavens challenge study and interpretation, in the course of which difficult questions are likely to be raised, and upon these conflicting answers may be, and indeed often have been elicited. In like manner the Scriptures chal lenge study and interpretation. In many instances they suggest much more than they expressly state. What they give in the shape of historical facts is often fitted to serve as a basis for a whole train Of inferences respecting the divine kingdom. So the mind is sent off upon far-reaching paths. What it finds in the pursuit of one topic it natu rally wishes to compare with the results of its inquiry upon other topics. Hence theological disquisition, definition. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents Illustrative of the History of the Church, Vol. 1 Love is a' great spirit and, like all spirits, he is intermediate between the divine and the mortal. And what, I said, is his power? He interprets, she replied, between gods and men, conveying to the gods the prayers and sacrifices of men, and to men the commands and replies of the gods he is the mediator who spans the chasm which divides them, and in him all is bound together, and through him the arts of the prophet and the priest, their sacrifices and mysteries and charms, and all prophecy and incantation, find their way. For God mingles not with man; but through Love all the inter course and speech of God with man, whether awake or asleep, is carried on. The wisdom which understands this is spiritual; all other wisdom, such as that of arts and handicrafts, is mean and vulgar. Now these Spirits or intermediate powers are many and diverse, and one of them is Love. -b. Jowett, The Dialogues of Plato,2 ii. 54. Of those who had embraced its doctrines, shone brightly in the cause of truth, and were as lights to the inhabitants of the land. They were concerned in their daily walk, to adorn the doctrine of God their Saviour; and by their faithfulness, they were instrumental to the gathering of others to the enjoyment of the substantial realities of religion. The blessing of the Lord was upon this portion of his people, and the heavenly dew evidently rested upon them. Under the constraining in uences of divine love and life, the mouths of several were Opened to declare of the riches Of the heavenly kingdom, and of the peace and joy which was to be found within the safe enclosure of the fold of Christ.
