Book Seasonal Relationships Between Phytoplankton and Mero Zooplankton Populations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay Virginia

Download or read book Seasonal Relationships Between Phytoplankton and Mero Zooplankton Populations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay Virginia written by Harold G. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial purpose of this study was to identify seasonal pattern of abundance for phytoplankton and mero-zooplankton larvae in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The next objective was to relate the temporal appearances of these two groups to each other and identify any apparent relationships. More detailed reports of the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations from this area have been prepared by the authors under separate titles to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Empgasis in this report stresses the broad distribution patterns of these species and their trophic relationship to each other in time. Past mero-zooplankton studies in the lower Chesapeake Bay have been minimal and generally stress individual species, their life cycles, distribution, or general ecology.

Book Primary Productivity in the Chesapeake Bay During the Summer of 1964

Download or read book Primary Productivity in the Chesapeake Bay During the Summer of 1964 written by W. Rowland Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary production by the phytoplankton of the upper Chesapeake Bay averaged about 1.5 to 3.5 Cm-2 day Cm-1 during the summer of 1964. Production in the tributaries was generally less than the open bay. This level of primary productivity is about the same as has been noted for other estuaries during summer months. On an annual basis, the production would be higher since the spring bloom phenomenon was not included in these measurements. The technique was evaluated by a series of rate measurements and a precision estimate. The precision of the method was estimated at about 20%. An endogenous physiological diurnal rhythm was noted but variations in photosynthetic capacity during the time of day that measurements were made was only about 25%. The ecological significance of these observations is discussed. (Author).

Book Seasonal Phytoplankton Composition and Concentrations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay and Vicinity

Download or read book Seasonal Phytoplankton Composition and Concentrations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay and Vicinity written by Harold G. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to characterize the phytoplankton and their seasonal patterns of development in the lower Chesapeake Bay, in an adjacent river estuary, and at a station in shelf waters near the Bay entrance. The river estuary is Hampton Roads, through which the James, Elizabeth, Lafayette, and Nansemond Rivers join to enter the lower Chesapeake Bay. Many of the earlier studies stressed the net phytoplankton, where diatoms and dinoflagellates characterized seasonal peaks, which commonly occurred during spring and fall, and to a lesser degree in summer. However, the significance of the nanoplankton component to productivity and total cell concentrations was later emphasized. Further comments on the phytoplankton composition of Chesapeake Bay plume were given by Marshall (1982), who noted seasonal differences were distinct enough to characterize the plume in its early movement on the continental shelf. The phytoplankton composition of the lower Chesapeake Bay consisted of a diverse assemblage of 243 species. The major seasonal growth periods were dominated by a diatomaceous flora and a picoplankton complex composed mainly of cyanophytes and chlorophytes.

Book Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science

Download or read book Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 4604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of estuaries and coasts has seen enormous growth in recent years, since changes in these areas have a large effect on the food chain, as well as on the physics and chemistry of the ocean. As the coasts and river banks around the world become more densely populated, the pressure on these ecosystems intensifies, putting a new focus on environmental, socio-economic and policy issues. Written by a team of international expert scientists, under the guidance of Chief Editors Eric Wolanski and Donald McClusky, the Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science, Ten Volume Set examines topics in depth, and aims to provide a comprehensive scientific resource for all professionals and students in the area of estuarine and coastal science Most up-to-date reference for system-based coastal and estuarine science and management, from the inland watershed to the ocean shelf Chief editors have assembled a world-class team of volume editors and contributing authors Approach focuses on the physical, biological, chemistry, ecosystem, human, ecological and economics processes, to show how to best use multidisciplinary science to ensure earth's sustainability Provides a comprehensive scientific resource for all professionals and students in the area of estuarine and coastal science Features up-to-date chapters covering a full range of topics

Book A Plankton Survey of the Chesapeake Bay Using a Continuous Underway Sampling System

Download or read book A Plankton Survey of the Chesapeake Bay Using a Continuous Underway Sampling System written by Richard C. Whaley and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the net plankton of the Chesapeake Bay was undertaken using a continuous underway sampling system. A total of nine cruises was made between October 1955 and October 1956. The survey included the entire length of the Bay. Sixty-three diatoms, 19 dinoflagellates and 10 green algae were identified and quantitative distributions were noted. Two general distribution patterns of the phytoplankton were noted: (a) those which exhibited a single maximum and (b) those which exhibited two maxima. Temperature and salinity were the only environmental factors measured. In a few cases there are suggestions of weak correlations between these factors and phytoplankton distributions, but these were obviously not the primary factors controlling the distributions. Nutrients, radiant energy and grazing factors were not evaluated. Zooplankton were not emphasized in this survey and were identified and counted only to general taxa. These results indicate the need for additional research on the plankton of the Chesapeake Bay. (Author).
