  • Author : Bernadette Hince
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2000-11-10

Download or read book The Antarctic Dictionary written by Bernadette Hince and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2000-11-10 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s most isolated continent has spawned some of the most unusual words in the English language. In the space of a mere century, a remarkable vocabulary has evolved to deal with the extraordinary environment and living organisms of the Antarctic and subantarctic. Here, for the first time, is a complete guide to the origin and definitions of Antarctic words. Like other historical dictionaries, The Antarctic Dictionary gives the reader quotations for each word. These quotations are the life-blood of the dictionary — more than 15 000 quotations from about 1000 different sources give the reader a unique insight into the way the language of Antarctica has evolved. The reader will find out what it means to be slotted, the shortcomings of homers, the joys of a donga and the hazards of a growler. The Antarctic Dictionary has been meticulously researched, and will appeal to all those who have been to the frozen continent or have ever dreamed of going there. It will also appeal to those fascinated by the development of language. With a forward by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Book The Crystal Desert

Download or read book The Crystal Desert written by David G. Campbell and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2002-05-07 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed author and biologist shares “a superb personal account [of Antarctica] . . . a remarkable evocation of a land at the bottom of the world” (Boston Globe). During the 1980s, biologist David Campbell spent three summers in Antarctica, researching its surprisingly plentiful wildlife. In The Crystal Desert, he combines travelogue, nature writing and science history to tell the story of life's tenacity on the coldest of Earth's continents. Between scuba expeditions in Admiralty Bay, Campbell remembers the explorers who discovered Antarctica, the whalers and sealers who despoiled it, and the scientists who laid the groundwork to decipher its mysteries. Chronicling the desperately short summers in beautiful, lucid prose, he presents a fascinating portrait of the evolution of life in Antarctica and of the continent itself. Winner of the John Burroughs Medal for Natural History Writing and a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship

Book excerpt: Penguin Biology is the first broad-based collection of biological and ecological studies of these unique birds to be published since 1975. Topics have since become broad ecological hypotheses, not species-specific descriptions, and new technology has taken observations into the oceanic depths. Penguin Biology shows new techniques and the applications mad of them in contemporary biological and evolutionary theory. Penguin Biology is an invaluable reference for ornithologists, animal behaviorists, animal physiologists, marine zoologists, marine ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and Antarctic researchers. Book The Behavior of Penguins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dietland Muller-Schwarze
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1985-06-30
  • ISBN : 1438413866
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book The Behavior of Penguins written by Dietland Muller-Schwarze and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-06-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Strange geese." That was their description when they were discovered in 1520 during Magellan's historic voyage. Today, penguins are familiar to everyone, yet few researchers have observed them in the remote regions in which they live. Written by an ecologist-behaviorist who has worked extensively in the natural penguin habitat, The Behavior of Penguins is the first general work on the entire family of penguins. Numerous and remarkable field photographs document the author's detailed study of the life cycles and breeding patterns of each penguin species. He brings to light their unusual abilities to go with little food for months, to dive deep in the ocean, and to protect themselves in extreme environments. Müller-Schwarze's comprehensive and fascinating account of penguins also emphasizes the urgent need to protect these birds and their natural habitat.

Book Birds of the Antarctic and Sub Antarctic

Download or read book Birds of the Antarctic and Sub Antarctic written by George E. Watson and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1975 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 24. The Antarctic Research Series is a medium for authoritative reports on the extensive scientific research being done in Antarctica. The series has elicited contributions from leading scientists; it seeks to maintain high scientific and publication standards. The scientific editor for each volume is chosen from among recognized authorities in the discipline or theme that it represents, as are the reviewers on whom the editor relies for advice. Research results appearing in this series are original contributions too long or otherwise inappropriate for publication in standard journals. The material is directed to specialists actively engaged in the work, to graduate students, to scientists in closely related fields, and to laymen versed in the environmental sciences. Some volumes comprise a single monograph. Others are collections of papers with a common theme.

Book Global Outlook for Ice Snow

Download or read book Global Outlook for Ice Snow written by Pål Prestrud and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2007 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by more than 70 scientists from around the world, this publication assesses the state of the environment and the trends in ice and snow-covered regions (the cryosphere). It looks at the significance of climate changes for ecosystems and human well-being, both now and in the years to come, given that changes in ice and snow alter the distribution of the earth's heat and water, and influence regional and global ocean circulation. This publication is an official project of the International Polar Year 2007-2008.

Book Seabird Ecology

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. W. Furness
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461320933
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Seabird Ecology written by R. W. Furness and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years there has been an excltmg upsurge in seabird research. There are several reasons for this. Man's increased ex ploitation of natural resources has led to a greater awareness of the potential conflicts with seabirds, and of the use of seabirds to indicate the damage we might be doing to our environment. Many seabird populations have increased dramatically in numbers and so seem more likely to conflict with man, for example through competition for food or transmission of diseases. Oil exploration and production has resulted in major studies of seabird distributions and ecology in relation to oil pollution. The possibility that seabirds may provide information on fish stock biology is now being critically investigated. Some seabird species have suffered serious declines in numbers and require conservation action to be taken to reduce the chances that they will become extinct. This requires an understanding of the factors determining their population size and dynamics.
