Book The Diseases of the Lungs Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Diseases of the Lungs Classic Reprint written by James Kingston Fowler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Lungs In this work an endeavour has been made, by the association in authorship of a physician and a surgeon, to present a continuous picture of the medical and surgical aspects of pulmonary disease. The book does not aspire to the position of a treatise on the diseases of the lungs, the object kept in view throughout having been to produce a work likely to prove useful to those engaged in the practice of medicine. The authors have read and discussed each other's work, but it has been thought advisable in order to obviate any doubt which might arise as to the identity of the writer who expresses an opinion or recommends any particular method of treatment, that each chapter should be initialled by the author who is responsible for it. An anatomical chapter has been introduced, which, while not intended to include all that can be said about the anatomy of the lungs and the surrounding parts, will, it is believed, be found to contain, in an accessible form, a number of useful facts such as the reader would only be able to discover with much labour 111 the textbooks of anatomy. In the revision of this chapter they have had the invaluable help of Professor G. D. Thank, of University College. It is hoped that due acknowledgment has been made in the text of the indebtedness of the authors to the works of previous writers, and particularly, as regards the medical aspect of the subject, to the masterly treatise of Dr. Wilson Fox on 'Diseases of the Lungs and Pleura.' This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Lungs, Bronchi and Pleura This small volume is designed to be a concise text book embodying the essential facts relating to the subjects treated. These are told in a practical way and arranged in a convenient form in the hope that it may prove a use ful handbook for the busy practitioner or student. Un proven theories are not discussed. Well established facts only are given, and these without unprofitable elabora tion. The methods described under general treatment are the most approved, and the formula given have been used and found eficacious. It would be impossible in a volume of this size to give all the remedies that might be indicated in any given condition, so the author has limited himself to mentioning those most frequently useful. Standard writings have been consulted in the preparation of this book, with the endeavor to make it represent the essence of current opinion. Hoping that it may find a place among the physician's useful reference books, it is entrusted to the kindly criticism of the profession. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Lungs, Heart and Kidneys This volume comprises a part of the topics lectured upon by me for several years in the Chicago Medical College. They have been elaborated from my lecture notes. It has been my endeavor to describe as clearly, concisely, and fully as possible the subjects of this book. I have avoided controversial topics, and may sometimes have erred by stating positively what is rather probably than positivelv true. I have tried to make the subject of treatment especially full, 'and have endeavored to give explicit directions as to the time when individual drugs should be used, the exact indica tions for them, and their modeof action in each disease. In order to prevent repetitions when the mode of action of drugs was the same in several allied diseases this fact is stated, and the details of action must be learned from the description of the first of the allied maladies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of the Lungs, and Heart: Including the Principles of Physical Diagnosis In the first of the two Parts, into which this work is divided, an attempt is made to describe the facts and principles of Physical Diagnosis in their applications to the Lungs, Heart, and great vessels. Although in the main confining himself to a description of physical signs, the Author has occasionally stepped aside to consider their mechanism, - yet not without the full consciousness, that in the present state of thoracic acoustics (and, indeed, of acoustics in general), all efforts of the kind must be merely tentative. If, on the one hand, the theories of the immortal discoverer of auscultation do not, in all instances, bear the test of clinical scrutiny, those of his German critics seem neither to be always in harmony with the principles of acoustics, nor accordant with the results of actual experiment. Whether such modifications as the Author has ventured to suggest in the theory of certain auscultatory signs, be of more satisfactory character, the verdict of his professional brethren can alone decide.
