Book The Direction of Desire

Download or read book The Direction of Desire written by Mark Gerard Murphy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Lacanian psychoanalysis and Christian mystical theology demonstrating the former’s potential for reinvigorating spiritual direction. The author outlines how current methods of spiritual direction become saturated with self-help psycho-pop methodologies, and that desire has therefore been foreclosed in these practices. He suggests that the root of this is a focus on ‘positive affective experientialism’, which means spiritual direction must focus on emotional wholeness, healing and positivity. Finally, he argues that a new dialogue between John of the Cross (a mystic whose writings on spiritual direction formulate part of the core of the Catholic spiritual tradition) and Jacques Lacan can open the way for a spiritual direction beyond the confines of experientialism. The book concludes that we can only escape the experiential commodification of spiritual direction by critiquing the drive to experience in and of itself. This novel work will appeal in particular to students and scholars of psychoanalysis, religion, philosophy and critical theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While searching for a model of preaching that is apt for our postmodern moment, Kay Northcutt respectfully eschews earlier models and suggests the what of preaching should consist in spiritual formation or the practice of spiritual direction. Taking an evocative, rather than how-to, approach, Northcutt notes the gaps created by earlier models and makes a case not only for framing preaching as an attractive art but also for understanding the preachers authority as religious in nature. The author provides readers with a new paradigm for developing their own homiletical discipline.

Book Desire and its Interpretation

Download or read book Desire and its Interpretation written by Jacques Lacan and published by Polity. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Lacan show us? He shows us that desire is not a biological function; that it is not correlated with a natural object; and that its object is fantasized. Because of this, desire is extravagant. It cannot be grasped by those who might try to master it. It plays tricks on them. Yet if it is not recognized, it produces symptoms. In psychoanalysis, the goal is to interpret—that is, to read—the message regarding desire that is harbored within the symptom. Although desire upsets us, it also inspires us to invent artifices that can serve us as a compass. An animal species has a single natural compass. Human beings, on the other hand, have multiple compasses: signifying montages and discourses. They tell you what to do: how to think, how to enjoy, and how to reproduce. Yet each person's fantasy remains irreducible to shared ideals. Up until recently, all of our compasses, no matter how varied, pointed in the same direction: toward the Father. We considered the patriarch to be an anthropological invariant. His decline accelerated owing to increasing equality, the growth of capitalism, and the ever-greater domination of technology. We have reached the end of the Father Age. Another discourse is in the process of taking the former's place. It champions innovation over tradition; networks over hierarchies; the draw of the future over the weight of the past; femininity over virility. Where there had previously been a fixed order, transformational flows constantly push back any and all limits. Freud was a product of the Father Age. He did a great deal to save it. The Catholic Church finally realized this. Lacan followed the way paved by Freud, but it led him to posit that the father is a symptom. He demonstrates that here using Hamlet as an example. What people have latched onto about Lacan's work—his formalization of the Oedipus complex and his emphasis on the Name-of-the-Father—was merely his point of departure. Seminar VI already revises this: the Oedipus complex is not the only solution to desire, it is merely a normalized form thereof; it is, moreover, a pathogenic form; it does not exhaustively explain desire’s course. Hence the eulogy of perversion with which this seminar ends: Lacan views perversion here as a rebellion against the identifications that assure the maintenance of social routines. This Seminar predicted “the revamping of formally established conformisms and even their explosion.” We have reached that point. Lacan is talking about us.

Download or read book Subjects of Desire written by Judith Butler and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work by one of the most important philosophers and critics of our time charts the genesis and trajectory of the desiring subject from Hegel's formulation in Phenomenology of Spirit to its appropriation by Kojève, Hyppolite, Sartre, Lacan, Deleuze, and Foucault. Judith Butler plots the French reception of Hegel and the successive challenges waged against his metaphysics and view of the subject, all while revealing ambiguities within his position. The result is a sophisticated reconsideration of the post-Hegelian tradition that has predominated in modern French thought, and her study remains a provocative and timely intervention in contemporary debates over the unconscious, the powers of subjection, and the subject.

Download or read book The Autistic Subject written by Leon S. Brenner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theory of autistic subjectivity from a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective. Dr. Brenner describes autism as a singular mode of being that is fundamentally linked to one’s identity and basic practices of existence, offering a rigorous alternative to treating autism as a mental or physical disorder. Drawing on Freud and Lacan’s psychoanalytic understanding of the subject, Brenner outlines the unique features of the autistic subjective structure and provides a comprehensive synthesis of contemporary work on the psychoanalysis of autism. The book examines research by theorists including Jean-Claude Maleval, Éric Laurent, Rosine and Robert Lefort that has been largely unavailable to Anglophone audiences until now. In this book autism is posited to be a singular subjective structure not reducible to neurosis or psychosis. In accordance with the Lacanian approach, autism is examined with detailed attention to the subject’s use of language, culminating in Brenner’s “autistic linguistic spectrum.” A compelling read for students and scholars of psychoanalysis and autism researchers and clinicians.

Book The Nature of Desire

Download or read book The Nature of Desire written by Federico Lauria and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desires matter. What are desires? Many believe that desire is a motivational state: desiring is being disposed to act. This conception aligns with the functionalist approach to desire and the standard account of desire's role in explaining action. According to a second influential approach, however, desire is first and foremost an evaluation: desiring is representing something as good. After all, we seem to desire things under the guise of the good. Which understanding of desire is more accurate? Is the guise of the good even right to assume? Should we adopt an alternative picture that emphasizes desire's deontic nature? What do neuroscientific studies suggest? Essays in the first section of the volume are devoted to these questions, and to the puzzle of desire's essence. In the second part of the volume, essays investigate some implications that the various conceptions of desire have on a number of fundamental issues. For example, why are inconsistent desires problematic? What is desire's role in practical deliberation? How do we know what we want? This volume will contribute to the emergence of a fruitful debate on a neglected, albeit crucial, dimension of the mind.

Download or read book Desire as Belief written by Alex Gregory and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A popular model of human action treats it as universally explicable by appeal to what we want. A related view evaluates our actions as rational or otherwise by appeal to what we want. However, these dominant views sit in tension with two other common sense ideas. First, that our normative beliefs — such as our beliefs about what we ought to do — sometimes explain our actions. Second, that those beliefs are crucial for determining whether our actions are rational. To try and resolve these tensions, this book defends 'desire-as-belief', the view that desires are just a special subset of our normative beliefs. This view entitles us to accept orthodox models of human motivation and rationality that explain those things with reference to desire, while also making room for our normative beliefs to play a role in those domains. This view also tells us to diverge from the orthodox view on which desires themselves can never be right or wrong. Rather, according to desire-as-belief, our desires can themselves be assessed for their accuracy, and they are wrong when they misrepresent normative features of the world. Hume says that it is not contrary to reason to prefer the destruction of the whole world to the scratching of your finger, but he is wrong: it is foolish to have this preference, and this is so because this preference misrepresents the relative worth of these things. This book mounts an engaging and comprehensive defence of these ideas.

Book The Direction of Desire Suggestions for the Application of Psychology to Everyday Life

Download or read book The Direction of Desire Suggestions for the Application of Psychology to Everyday Life written by Stanley M. Bligh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Direction of Desire, Suggestions for the Application of Psychology to Everyday Life This book makes no claim to be scientific in the strict sense of the word. It aims chiefly at suggesting new lines of inquiry with regard to the alteration of the tone of consciousness, where that is desired. It is hoped that it may be found useful by those who have no time or inclination for reading longer and more serious works on Psychology, but who at the same time have an interest, either for their own sake or for that of others, in investigating the possibilities of the human personality. The statements of psychological principles are not intended to be regarded as in any sense authoritative. As far as possible any tendency to dogmatism has been avoided. Apologies are offered for the absence of qualifications and reservations where they do not appear. They have only been omitted for the sake of clearness where it seemed that they would have complicated the general line of argument without being positively necessary. The main intention has been to give hints and suggestions to be used as a starting-point for personal observation and experiment.
