Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliography and guide to scholarly literature on the genre of Old English wisdom poetry. Wisdom literature played a crucial role in the evolution of traditional societies, contributing to the structure of society and to the acceptance of new ideas within a culture, a function that has become increasingly understood. Old English wisdom literature is the focus of this volume, which offers an bibliography of the scholarly criticism between 1800 and 1990 of a group of largely secular poems comprising the metrical Charms, The Fortunes of Men, The Gifts of Men, Homiletic Fragments I and II, Maxims I and II, The Order of the World, Precepts, the metrical Proverbs, the Riddles of the Exeter Book, the Rune Poem, Solomon and Saturn, and Vainglory. A General Introduction investigates debates between scholars and establishes overall trends; it is followed by the bibliography proper, divided into chapters, each with its own introduction, focusing on a major text or collection of texts, with entries arranged chronologically. Dr RUSSELL POOLEteaches in the School of English and Media Studies at Massey University, New Zealand.

Dealing with a wide range of medieval works, they reflect the honorand’s own scholarly interests in medieval narrative and its reception in later periods. Together, the contributions are witness not only to the esteem in which Norris Lacy is held by the profession but also to the collegial spirit of the international community of medievalists.

Download or read book The Dialogue of Solomon and Marcolf written by Nancy Mason Bradbury and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two texts of the Dialogue presented here, a Latin version printed ca. 1488 and a Middle English translation printed in 1492, preserve lively, entertaining, and revealing exchanges between the Old Testament wisdom figure Solomon and Marcolf, a medieval peasant who is ragged and foul-mouthed but quick-witted and verbally astute. The Dialogue was a best-seller of its day; Latin versions survive in some twenty-seven manuscripts and forty-nine early printed editions and the work was translated into a wide variety of late medieval vernaculars, including German, Dutch, Swedish, Italian, English, and Welsh.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dialogue or Communing Between the Wise King Salomon and Marcolphus NO apology will be needed for this reproduction in facsimile of a book so full of interest both for the scholar and the bibliographer. For the benefit of those who find the reading of black letter irksome, a reprint in Roman type has been added while the bibliography of early editions at the end of the book will, it is hoped, assist those who wish to study the subject more fully. In the introduction I have endeavoured to give, as shortly as possible, an account of the growth of the legend, and I must acknowledge my special indebtedness to two writers on the subject, J. M. Kemble and M. W. Maccallum. I must thank Mr. E. B. W. Nicholson, Bodley's librarian, for permission to have the original reproduced and the photographer of the Clarendon Press for the care which has produced so good a result. To my friend Mr. F. Jenkinson, librarian of the University Library, Cambridge, I am indebted for much kind help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
