Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.

Book Maternal and Child Health Services Under the Social Security Act Title V Part 1

Download or read book Maternal and Child Health Services Under the Social Security Act Title V Part 1 written by United States Children'S Bureau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maternal and Child-Health Services Under the Social Security Act, Title V, Part 1: Development of Program, 1936-39 Madam: There is transmitted herewith Publication No. 259, Maternal and Child - Health Services Under the Social Security Act: development of program, 1936 - 39. This bulletin covers the first 4 years of Federal and State cooperation under title V, part 1, of the Social Security Act, providing for grants to the States for maternal and child - health services. During this period maternal mortality in the United States was reduced by almost one-third and infant mortality by one - sixth. The encouraging progress that has been made gives assurance that with the expanded resources recommended by the Children's Bureau Advisory Committee on Maternal and Child Health Services and by other bodies it will be possible to provide really adequate care for mothers and children through out the Nation. The fact that physical examination of registrants under the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 resulted in the rejection of almost half of our young men as physically or mentally unfit for general military service emphasizes the importance of an adequate maternal and child - health program as an essential guarantee for the future of our democracy. Dr. Martha M. Eliot, Associate Chief of the Children's Bureau, has been responsible for general supervision of the initiation and development of the program for grants to the States for maternal and child - health services and crippled children's services. In 1941 the Division of Health Services was established in the Children's Bureau, combining the two former divisions, the Maternal and Child Health Division and the Crippled Children's Division, that had been directly responsible for administering these programs. Book excerpt: Health Insurance is a Family Matter is the third of a series of six reports on the problems of uninsurance in the United Sates and addresses the impact on the family of not having health insurance. The book demonstrates that having one or more uninsured members in a family can have adverse consequences for everyone in the household and that the financial, physical, and emotional well-being of all members of a family may be adversely affected if any family member lacks coverage. It concludes with the finding that uninsured children have worse access to and use fewer health care services than children with insurance, including important preventive services that can have beneficial long-term effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the role of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Training Program in planning and supporting training designed to produce state, community, university, and professional association leaders who can advocate for children and mothers and continue to effect change that saves lives and enhances health. The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), which supports the MCH Training Program, ensures that graduate programs and professional schools selected to receive training grants provide students and faculty with a focus on women and children (including infants and adolescents) in their teaching, research, and service. By attracting attention to children's needs within a public health framework that also emphasizes such MCH values as family-centered and culturally competent care, the program aims ultimately to influence all aspects of maternal and child health throughout the nation. The program supports a set of key leadership activities, all of which promote Title V goals. This report details the MCH Training Program's history and accomplishments in four areas: (1) training students for leadership; (2) developing new fields and providing information and expertise; (3) supporting faculty; and (4) enhancing collaboration. The report also includes a more in-depth discussion of two training priorities: adolescent health and leadership education in neurodevelopmental and related disabilities. The two case studies offer readers a snapshot of the MCH Training Program's evolution and where it stands today. (Appendices contain additional program information and fact sheets. Contains 36 references.) (EV)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current era of globalization, war, and socioeconomic unrest has revealed public health as a worldwide concern and a major frontier for social justice with maternal and child health at its epicenter. Yet, there has been a relative scarcity of training resources specifically dedicated to this crucial area. "Maternal and Child Health: Global Challenges, Programs, and Policies" addresses this gap in current knowledge by analyzing the range of socioeconomic and environmental factors, health care disparities, politics, policies, and cultural practices that impact the health and safety of mothers, as well as the well-being and optimum development of their children. Individual sections focus on unequal distribution of the world’s resources, politics and power, specific disease concerns, programs, policies and emerging concerns with a focus on what is currently being done, and what needs to be done to improve the health status of women, children, and adolescents. The book’s contributors are some of the world’s most respected experts, carefully selected to represent different global geographic regions and diverse professional disciplines related to maternal and child health from both academic and field practice perspectives. Among the topics in this authoritative volume: The impact of war, globalization, gender inequity, and harmful traditional practices (e.g., female genital mutilation). Specific health concerns, including tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, and malnutrition. Child and adolescent health issues, from abuse and neglect to children in difficult circumstances. Pregnancy-related issues: safety, abortion and post-abortion care, teen pregnancy, and more. Strategies for planning, developing, and maintaining maternal and child health systems in developing countries. The status of global initiatives, such as Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses and the Millennium Development Goals. The status of evidence-based maternal and child health in the developing world. With such a wealth of information on both practical and conceptual levels, "Maternal and Child Health: Global Challenges, Programs, and Policies" is as relevant to students and researchers in the field as it is to policy makers and those working for global health and development organizations. It also makes an excellent stand-alone text for courses in global health in general and global maternal and child health in particular.
