Book excerpt: The Army must ensure that retention efforts result in the reenlistment of enough qualified enlisted personnel to maintain force readiness. The purpose of this research was to identify factors that influence soldiers' reenlistment intentions and decisions. A comprehensive model of career decision making was developed and tested using path analysis. The findings indicate that the major determinant of reenlistment intent is organizational commitment, which in turn is influenced by tenure, satisfaction, and perceptions of unattainable needs and aspirations, civilian alternatives, MOS, and demographic and organizational variables on reenlistment intent. Discussion addresses the relevance of the findings to retention policy and career counseling in the Army. Book excerpt: "This report summarizes findings from the Spring 1995 Sample Survey Military Personnel (SSMP) which focused on soldier satisfaction with aspects of their Army life, jobs, and careers. A total of 15,113 soldiers responded to the survey. There were few if any differences between males and females in their responses to items on Stress, Promotion Potential, and Global Satisfaction (job/career/life). Females were more positive in their responses to items covering Benefits, Family, Equity, Basic Pay, Job Security (officers only), and Job Characteristics (enlisted only). Males were more positive in their responses to items covering Co-Workers. Supervisors, leeadership, Developmental Courses (more likely to have bad courses), and Absence from Duty Station for Military Reasons (more likely to be deployed/TDY/in training). Results from the survey did not identily any clear cut relationships between job satisfaction and career intent for males or females; however, it does appear that separation from family may be an important factor in why some female soldiers decide to leave the Army."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: This project was designed to improve the understanding and modeling of the decisions, made each year by thousands of first-term soldiers, to reenlist in the Army or to leave for civilian jobs and school. A model of the reenlistment decision formulated from a decision-analytic perspective was developed, based on an extensive review of the literature in the areas of military personnel, job satisfaction and job change, and decision theory, as well as from focus groups conducted with first-term soldiers at Fort Benning, Georgia. A multicomponent decision-modeling approach incorporating attitudinal, normative, and affective predictors of reenlistment intent was then developed, along with a set of instruments to capture data on these components. Consistent with previous findings for an enlistment task, the analysis of the pilot test data indicated that the three components predicted reenlistment intent in the following rank order: affect, attitudinal, and normative. The results also suggest that the Army has available tools for influencing these reenlistment decisions that are much more varied than the limited set of mainly economic factors that are now predominant in these programs. Specifically, the affective component dominated the economic variables in predicting reenlistment intent for this limited sample of soldiers, and may be an important reenlistment program and policy lever in the future. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to determine the effect of race on job satisfaction, and the effect of race on those factors considered to be determinants of job satisfaction. The data used for the research was obtained from a survey of military personnel conducted by the Rand corporation in early 1979. The data was used to test bivariate and multivariate models with job satisfaction as independent variables. The types of statistical methods employed to detect the effect of race in the various models were, ANOVA, GIM, Factor Analysis, and Regression Analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that race was a significant factor in the determination of job satisfaction, but that the effect of race in models of job satisfaction was very small. Book excerpt: This military thesis investigated the relationship of race to job satisfaction by examining factors considered to be determinants of job satisfaction among military enlistees. The study analyzed black, hispanic and white enlistees in all four branches of service. Bivariate analysis, factor analysis and regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of race on those factors considered to be determinants of job satisfaction. The results of the analysis indicated that race was a significant effect on the determination of job satisfaction. An understanding of the effect of race to factors that determine individual's satisfaction will give military policymakers greater opportunities for control over behaviors such as enlistment and retention.
