He traveled widely throughout the Middle East and taught at universities in Germany, Iran and the United States. After a lifetime studying the thoughts and cultures of the East, he formulated the thesis laid out here in his final book: that East and West are not mere geographical or even racial distinctions, but two radically different types of consciousness, two fundamentally different orientations and ways of thinking. "Professor Haas attacks-and I believe, demolishes-an assumption that underlies almost all modern theories of history: that the minds of all human beings, if not defective or disordered, work in essentially the same way. ... [He] has, I believe, done for the study of comparative history what Böhr did for atomic physics." - Revilo Oliver

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question, according to George P. Conger, noted authority on Indian philosophy, is not so much whether India can contribute as to whether the West is ready to receive. Here, in selected essays from the proceedings of the East-West philosophers' Conferences, is an examination by world authorities of one of the oldest, richest, most complicated, and most profound philosophical traditions of all time. The intimate relationship in the Indian perspective between philosophy and life is revealed. Common misunderstandings concerning Indian philosophy are exposed, and the marked kinship between India and the West is emphasized. The essays which comprise this book, since they are technical in themselves and written by experts in their special areas, meet the needs of the educated reader generally, as well as the technical expert.

Book Irony of Theology and the Nature of Religious Thought

Download or read book Irony of Theology and the Nature of Religious Thought written by Donald Wiebe and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a careful re-evaluation of the works of Lévy-Bruhl, Wiebe establishes the coherence of Lévy-Bruhl's classic distinction between primitive, or mythopoeic, and scientific thought, maintaining that religious thinking is mythopoeic in nature while theology -- which thinks about religion -- is related to modern Western scientific thinking. The pre-Socratic philosophers, Wiebe shows, developed a form of rational thought radically different from the religious-mythopoeic thought that preceded it. Although Plato was concerned with recovery of the pre-philosophic wisdom of ancient Greece, he attempted this within a rational, philosophic structure. Wiebe argues that Christian thought, originally mythopoeic, changed rapidly under the influence of Hellenistic culture, and that the Platonization of Christianity introduced an element of philosophic thinking which would eventually undermine its mythopoeic essence. In clarifying the nature of religious thought and its relation to religion, Wiebe provides a sound basis for the development of a general theory of religion. While of particular interest to philosophers, theologians, and students and scholars of the study of religion, Wiebe's study draws upon sources as diverse as philosophy, history, anthropology, and sociology and will therefore interest anyone involved in these disciplines as well.

Book East and West

Download or read book East and West written by Y. J. Choi and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East and West: Understanding the Rise of China by Y.J. Choi Innumerable articles and books have been written about East Asia and China since this part of the world has been catapulted into the center of the global economic scene. Unfortunately, most, if not all of them, are wide of the mark in terms of understanding the geographic and philosophical fundamentals of Eastern civilizations undergirding the rise of the East. The relative decline of the West appears to be inevitable as the ascendance of the East prompts a shift of the center of gravity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Accordingly, we need to understand the East (and the West, for that matter) by freeing ourselves from the centuries-old habit of West-centrism. Neither in the West nor in the East do we find a paper written with a balanced approach regarding the two civilizations. Because of this, and thanks to his vast experience in both East and West, Ambassador Y.J. Choi was prompted to explain this epochal change by comparing the two civilizations on equal footing. His text constitutes the very first book attempting an objective, neutral and balanced comparison of ancient Eastern and European/Mediterranean civilizations, including their influence on and implications for contemporary events.

Book The Quintessential Jesus of Nazareth

Download or read book The Quintessential Jesus of Nazareth written by Allison Sledge and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penned by Allison Sledge, The Quintessential Jesus of Nazareth is a penetrating, intellectually profound masterpiece of the Highest Order. Ms. Sledge is a premier scholar of gnosticism, comparative religion, Biblical nomenclature, symbolism, onomastics, metaphysics, kaballah, mysticism and spiritual initiation. Her book transports the reader beyond space and time - into the mind, heart, spirit and soul of The Master Jesus, on every conceivable level which is not generally known to the masses. Many of the Holy Scriptures chapters and verses will be viewed from a different perspective; as was once perceived with the universal eyes with which Jesus viewed the world, rather than what many of the modern clergy promulgate and attempt to teach the majority of unenlightened souls. This book is designed to enlighten each reader to depths they might not have ever imagined Never before has a writer dared to be so bold as to interpret the Natal Birth Chart of Jesus Christ, a Piscean, born on March 19th, 07 BC, while elevating and re-creating awareness, understanding and insight to completely new heights of all inclusive universal comprehension. This Authors book was written in a stream of consciousness with God, emanating from her deep connection with Jesus of Nazareth. Intertwining her personal observations within the subject matter, Allison Sledge methodically includes the works of Edgar Cayce, The Keys of Enoch, The Aquarian Gospel and Egyptology. She engages her familiarity with science, mathematics, planetary energies, and Biblical personalities. Her work highlights the thread of unity, which connects the Old Testament with the New Testament in symbolic patterns, from Genesis to Revelations. Her goal is to be inclusive rather than exclusive, thus incorporating differing thoughts and opinions into the ultimate reality that We Are All One, despite our conflicting beliefs; just as Jesus taught. Contemplating the reality and purpose of human existence surely must lead us to wonder how we, as human beings created in the image of God, do not truly know God as Jesus. There is a disconnection. Even more profound is the fact that Jesus, The Christ, died a horrendous death by execution in order to instill in each one of us His everlasting message: That we love one another as we love ourselves... Sadly, the state of the world today reflects the exact opposite of His hopes and wishes. The Book, now in your hands, was given to you to know the Real Jesus of Nazareth, inside and out, like you have never, ever known before. Enjoy it, and God Bless You.

Book excerpt: All Is Mind is one of the rarest books, attempting to unfold mysteries of human mind and of the universe. It deeply looks into new, delighting, and intellect-blasting Skolimowskian philosophy of the participatory mind, which truly represents the crux of evolution, the climax of evolution, the absolute beauty of evolution, the soul of evolution, and the true spirit that evolution seems striving to instil into human beings for the perfection of their own evolution, and for the deep and real purpose of evolution itself. Presenting the most extraordinary aspect of lifethe human mindthe book extraordinarily explains how the mind conceives, processes, chisels, shapes, and reshapes everything and every phenomenon it encounters; how it creates reality; how it attempts to explore everything out there; how, through its outreach tentacles, it creates a sphere of its ownthe noosphere; how it goes on extending the limits of the noosphere; and many more thoughts, concepts, theories, and philosophies encompassing the all-creative, wonderful, and not yet fully understood mind. The mind in the book emerges as an epic of the evolution itself. The book attempts to transcend all previous theories of evolution, and it reveals how the mind can help us reach the stars.
