Book Selection of Pedestrian Crossing Treatments at Controlled and Uncontrolled

Download or read book Selection of Pedestrian Crossing Treatments at Controlled and Uncontrolled written by Suleiman Ashur and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designers and traffic engineers have to make decisions on selecting a pedestrian treatment whenever designing a new pedestrian facility or retrofitting an existing one. The goal is either to provide or improve pedestrian safety at pedestrian crossing facilities, including controlled locations of signalized intersections and approaches with stop and yield signs, and uncontrolled locations of intersections and midblock sites. Currently, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has limited resources on pedestrian treatment selection that does not take into consideration key elements such as number of lanes and the existence of a raised median. Therefore, there is a need to find a more detailed and comprehensive approach to providing guidelines when deciding on a pedestrian crossing treatment. The approach has to be practical and can be easily utilized by traffic and design engineers, planners, and other constituents. Most of the State DOTs developed their guidelines on pedestrian crossing treatment based on several resources. However, the 2002 FHWA-RD-01-075 study titled "Safety Effects of Marked Vs. Unmarked Crosswalks at Uncontrolled Locations" was adopted by several states either "as is," with some modifications, or referenced as a source on pedestrian crosswalk selection. State DOTs mainly use standards and guidelines from the National MUTCD, Part 3 and NCHRP Report 672 for roundabout crosswalk markings. In general, there are no clear warrants for grade separation treatment. In addition, there is a need for a national and comprehensive study to develop practical guidelines on pedestrian crossing treatments, especially on multilane roadways, complex intersections, and when the speed is 45 mph or more. This study proposed guidelines on crosswalk markings and treatment selection of pedestrian crossings based on a synthesis of federal and state reports, guidelines, design manuals, polices, and other relevant publications. It is recommended to adopt these guidelines as a reference for pedestrian treatment selection at INDOT.

Department U.S. Department of Transportation and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was conducted to assess innovative and practical solutions for pedestrian grade crossing treatments, to make recommendations and guidelines for future upgrade projects, and to identify additional research for pedestrian treatments for which safety benefit analyses have not been conducted or are not understood. In addition to researching publicly available information of use of pedestrian grade crossing treatments, an outreach effort was made to each commuter and intercity passenger railroad within the United States. Amtrak, Caltrain, Capital Metro, Coaster, Metrolink, New Jersey Transit, and Long Island Railroad responded and shared some of their solutions to pedestrian safety at railroad grade crossings. Their solutions include inter-track fencing, pedestrian gates, swing gates, channelization, and detectable warnings, as well as other devices (audible warnings, etc.) that are not the focus of this research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way forward for sustainable quality of life in cities of all sizes Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Build American Prosperity is a book of forward-thinking ideas that breaks with modern wisdom to present a new vision of urban development in the United States. Presenting the foundational ideas of the Strong Towns movement he co-founded, Charles Marohn explains why cities of all sizes continue to struggle to meet their basic needs, and reveals the new paradigm that can solve this longstanding problem. Inside, you’ll learn why inducing growth and development has been the conventional response to urban financial struggles—and why it just doesn’t work. New development and high-risk investing don’t generate enough wealth to support itself, and cities continue to struggle. Read this book to find out how cities large and small can focus on bottom-up investments to minimize risk and maximize their ability to strengthen the community financially and improve citizens’ quality of life. Develop in-depth knowledge of the underlying logic behind the “traditional” search for never-ending urban growth Learn practical solutions for ameliorating financial struggles through low-risk investment and a grassroots focus Gain insights and tools that can stop the vicious cycle of budget shortfalls and unexpected downturns Become a part of the Strong Towns revolution by shifting the focus away from top-down growth toward rebuilding American prosperity Strong Towns acknowledges that there is a problem with the American approach to growth and shows community leaders a new way forward. The Strong Towns response is a revolution in how we assemble the places we live.

Book Pedestrian Crosswalks Integration with Pedestrian Sites

Download or read book Pedestrian Crosswalks Integration with Pedestrian Sites written by Eylem Akman and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments and changes in transportation systems caused disharmony in urban patterns in general while they have resulted in rapid access opportunities, because both pedestrian and vehicle needs have equally been imposed on existing of urban patterns. Different countries have different approaches for designing the circulation system in the cities depending on their socio-economic structures and political systems. In the developed countries pedestrians are not neglected, on the contrary, they are considered as much as vehicles. Opposed to this, in the developing countries, the pedestrian needs are ignored with respect to security, comfort, convenience, aesthetic, and continuity aspects. Particularly, the disabled are effected heavily from this ignorance. The aim of this study is to develop an optimisation of design criteria for safe pedestrian crossings that link pedestrian areas; and to test these criteria though made a design projects on Adana. The methodology used in the study consists of three steps: Theoretical, analytical, and pragmatical. Theoretical step consists of literature survey, analytical step includes analysis of the selected problem areas as pedestrian crossing, and finally pragmatic step proposes a way of problem system for the pedestrian crossings on D-400 National road in Adana. In this respect, Türkkuşu Junction was selected which has the high volume both vehicle and pedestrian for design.

Book Engineering Design for Pedestrian Safety at Highway rail Grade Crossings

Download or read book Engineering Design for Pedestrian Safety at Highway rail Grade Crossings written by Alison Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abstract: A number of pedestrian treatments at railroad grade crossings have been developed and are used throughout the United States. The decision of when to use these treatments is generally a matter of best practices, using a decision tree, or conducting a site assessment. There has been little research on the efficacy of particular treatments. More important, because pedestrian treatments are seldom, if ever, used in isolation, there is no known research on what particular configurations of available pedestrian treatments provide the highest level of safety. A USDOT 2010 policy statement encourages transportation agencies to improve opportunities for pedestrian and bicyclists. The United States Access Board, in turn, has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to establish guidelines to address public right of way issues for people with disabilities. In anticipation of more non-motorized users of varying abilities making use of pedestrian grade-crossing facilities, it is important that the efficacy of pedestrian treatments at grade crossings be fully understood.
