Book High Density Plasma Source for Large Area Chemical Vapor Deposition of Diamond Films

Download or read book High Density Plasma Source for Large Area Chemical Vapor Deposition of Diamond Films written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this program Science Research Laboratory (SRL) and the Plasma Processing Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT are developing a large-area, directed plasma/atomic beam source for diamond deposition. The plasma source is based on an inductively-driven plasma accelerator that efficiently produces a high density (l0(exp 14)-10(exp 17)/cu cm) plasma over an area of 0.1-1 square meters. The goal of this effort is to experimentally demonstrate the technical feasibility of employing the plasma source for high-throughput diamond deposition, through characterization of plasma parameters and preliminary diamond deposition experiments. A reactor design study will also be completed during Phase I, leading to an engineering design of a large-area plasma reactor for Phase II implementation. The period of performance is from 30 September 1994 to 29 March 1995. jg p.4.

Book Handbook of Ion Sources

Download or read book Handbook of Ion Sources written by Bernhard Wolf and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Ion Sources delivers the data needed for daily work with ion sources. It also gives information for the selection of a suitable ion source and ion production method for a specific application. The Handbook concentrates on practical aspects and introduces the principle function of ion sources. The basic plasma parameters are defined and discussed. The working principles of various ion sources are explained, and examples of each type of ion source are presented with their operational data. Tables of ion current for various elements and charge states summarize the performance of different ion sources. The problems related to the production of ions of non-gaseous elements are detailed, and data on useful materials for evaporation and ion source construction are summarized. Additional chapters are dedicated to extraction and beam formation, ion beam diagnosis, ion source electronics, and computer codes for extraction, acceleration, and beam transport. Emittance and brilliance are described and space charge effects and neutralization discussed. Various methods for the measurement of current, profile, emittance, and time structure are presented and compared. Intensity limits for these methods are provided for different ion energies. Typical problems related to the operation of ion source plasmas are discussed and practical examples of circuits are given. The influence of high voltage on ion source electronics and possibilities for circuit protection are covered. The generation of microwaves and various microwave equipment are described and special problems related to microwave operation are summarized. The Handbook of Ion Sources is a valuable reference on the subject, of benefit to practitioners and graduate students interested in accelerators, ion implantation, and ion beam techniques.

Download or read book Plasma Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-01-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its current physics decadal survey, Physics 2010, the NRC was asked by the DOE, NSF, and NASA to carry out an assessment of and outlook for the broad field of plasma science and engineering over the next several years. The study was to focus on progress in plasma research, identify the most compelling new scientific opportunities, evaluate prospects for broader application of plasmas, and offer guidance to realize these opportunities. The study paid particular attention to these last two points. This "demand-side" perspective provided a clear look at what plasma research can do to help achieve national goals of fusion energy, economic competitiveness, and nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship. The report provides an examination of the broad themes that frame plasma research: low-temperature plasma science and engineering; plasma physics at high energy density; plasma science of magnetic fusion; space and astrophysical science; and basic plasma science. Within those themes, the report offers a bold vision for future developments in plasma science.

Book Design and Construction of Field Reversed Configuration Plasma Chamber for Plasma Material Interaction Studies

Download or read book Design and Construction of Field Reversed Configuration Plasma Chamber for Plasma Material Interaction Studies written by DuWayne L. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) plasma source was designed and constructed to conduct high energy plasma-materials interaction studies. The purpose of these studies is the development of advanced materials for use in plasma based electric propulsion systems and nuclear fusion containment vessels. Outlined within this thesis is the basic concept of FRC plasmoid creation, an overview of the device design and integration of various diagnostics systems for plasma conditions and characterization, discussion on the variety of material defects resulting from the plasma exposure with methods and tools designed for characterization. Using a Michelson interferometer it was determined that the FRC plasma densities are on the order of ~1021 m-3. A novel dynamic pressure probe was created to measure ion velocities averaging 300 km/s. Compensating flux loop arrays were used to measure magnetic field strength and verify the existence of the FRC plasmoid and when used in combination with density measurements it was determined that the average ion temperatures are ~130 eV. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) was employed as a means of characterizing the size and shape of the plasma jet in the sample exposure positions. SEM results from preliminary studies reveal significant morphological changes on plasma facing material surfaces, and use of XRD to elucidate fuel gas-ion implantation strain rates correlated to plasma exposure energies.

Book Design and Evaluation of a Radio Frequency Plasma Source

Download or read book Design and Evaluation of a Radio Frequency Plasma Source written by Laurence R. Boedeker and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design, construction and performance of a very high radio frequency discharge plasma source is discussed. The purpose of such a device in the present research program is to provide a source of nonequilibrium air plasma of suitable electrical conductivity for the operation of the traveling wave pump, an electrodeless induction plasma accelerator. The final accelerated plasma stream is sought as a flow facility for high altitude high Mach number flight simulation. A study of the plasma stream effluent from the source is made and electron energy distributions and electron density profiles are presented as a function of operating power input and pressure. The electrical conductivity of the plasma and the wall energy losses are also measured. At the lowest pressure of operation (35 millitorrs) the ratio of electron temperature to gas temperature is found to be over 200 at the point of highest gas temperature. The electrical circuits for generating the radio frequency energy and for diagnostics measurements are also discussed. (Author).
