Excerpt: ... more wonderful: but that it should be made capable of receiving and sustaining the life of God, of having his mind, and of working his works, is a thing which passeth understanding, being in very deed the mighty power of God. The great account which is made of the resurrection of Christ, in all the Scriptures, as " the exceeding greatness of God's mighty working" (Eph. i.), and of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, which is the first-fruits thereof--called " the power from on high," as if nothing else were worthy of that name--do prove how much more vast is this than every other manifestation of Godhead unto men. To make this erroneous mind of ours capable of discerning truth infallibly, to make this trembling and stammering lip capable of uttering words before which death and the grave and the devil stand discovered and dismantled, to make this fearful heart capable of confidence in the face of all ungodly confederations, and this palsied hand to strengthen with all the power of God--these are things which far surpass the speculation, and almost the belief, of man. And had we not seen it accomplished in the feebleness of Jesus Christ, who calleth himself " a worm, and no man," we should not have believed it possible to be done in mortal man: and had we not the assurance of Him who is the Truth, that the like works, and greater, were to be done in them who believe, we should have thought it a very wonderful thing, done once, upon an extraordinary occasion, for an extraordinary end, by one who was an extraordinary person, God as well as man, and never to be renewed again: but having his word and the facts of all the Apostolical history for it, we believe, as we have written, that this is the third and highest sphere of God's operation in man, ...

Best known for the Checks to Antinomianism, he established a theology of history to defend the church against the encroachment of antinomianism as a polemic against hyper-Calvinism. Fletcher believed that the hyper-Calvinist system of divine fiat and finished salvation did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer's personal progress in salvation. Fletcher made the doctrine of accommodation a unifying principle of his theological system and further developed the doctrine of divine accommodation into a theology of ministry. As God accommodated divine revelation to the frailties of human beings, Fletcher argued that ministers of the gospel must accommodate the gospel to their hearers in order to gain a hearing for the gospel without losing the goal of true Christianity. 'True Christianity' contains insights from Fletcher, who devoted himself, according to Wesley, to being 'an altogether Christian'.
