Book The Dancing Man

Download or read book The Dancing Man written by Robert Byron and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern California is many things to many people. A continuous influx of new people, new ideas, new interests, and different life styles creates a mind-boggling diversity. This story covers the life of an individual who is part of that diverse mosaic - an East Coast transplant who comes to Southern California by way of the US Marine Corps and San Diego. This book is a chronology of indelible memories that begin with family life in the depression thirties and the early-on impact of Catholicism from elementary school to mid-college. It provides a unique insiders view of life in a near monastic setting when the author, at age 15, commits himself to a religious order. Leaving the order in mid-college, he joins another highly disciplined organization the United States Marine Corps where, as both an enlisted man and officer, he sheds the earlier mold of the religious life. After military service, years of mainstream jobs follow including city halls, county government, and aerospace - all blended with a heavy dose of politics and teaching. His engagement with entrepreneurial undertakings follows with responses to critical needs such as jobs for displaced aerospace engineers when space programs are cutback, creation of a charter school to meet the need for better public schools, and his expansion of academic programs to engage older Americans in mentally stimulating and life enhancing learning experiences. All these experiences are couched within the context of events that highlighted each decade. This multifaceted career takes its toll on a marriage of thirty years whose continuity has been sustained in large measure through a family- shared hobby of dancing. But even dancing cant hold together the strains put on a marriage by a roller coaster life of continuous change. Divorce and the premature death of 3 of 4 children mar a life absorbed with programs designed to benefit the community. Despite these losses, the author continues to lead, teach, and dance. This book reflects so many facets of southland life that many readers, especially long time residents of Southern California, will identify with one or more aspects the military, former aerospace workers, city workers, teachers, and the retirement community. It provides a unique overview of Southern Californias dance scene especially in the Los Angeles-Orange County-San Bernardino/Riverside, and San Diego areas. Dancing has long been central to the authors family - ballroom, country, folk, and swing. The hobby continues to fuel the authors energy and pleasure. To those in or about to enter the expanding ranks of Americas seniors, the author sets an example of an age-impervious effort to enhance a communitys learning resources. His current efforts involve formation of a senior think tank whose analyses of current events will be shared with schools and the community.

Book Sounding Roman

  • ISBN : 0199949247
  • Pages : 529 pages

Download or read book Sounding Roman written by Sonia Tamar Seeman and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do marginalized communities speak back to power when they are excluded from political processes and socially denigrated? In what ways do they use music to sound out their unique histories and empower themselves? How can we hear their voices behind stereotyped and exaggerated portrayals promoted by mainstream communities, record producers and government officials? Sounding Roman: Music and Performing Identity in Western Turkey explores these questions through a historically-grounded and ethnographic study of Turkish Roman ("Gypsies") from the Ottoman period up to the present. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork (1995 to the present), collected oral histories, historical documents of popular culture (recordings, images, song texts, theatrical scripts), legal and administrative documents, this book takes a hard look at historical processes by which Roman are stereotyped as and denigrated as "ingene"---a derogatory group name equivalent to the English term, "gypsy", and explores creative musical ways by which Roman have forged new musical forms as a means to create and assert new social identities. Sounding Roman presents detailed musical analysis of Turkish Roman musical genres and styles, set within social, historical and political contexts of musical performances. By moving from Byzantine and Ottoman social contexts, we witness the reciprocal construction of ethnic identity of both Roman and Turk through music in the 20th century. From neighborhood weddings held in the streets, informal music lessons, to recording studios and concert stages, the book traces the dynamic negotiation of social identity with new musical sounds. Through a detailed ethnography of Turkish Roman ("Gypsy") musical practices from the Ottoman period to the present, this work investigates the power of music to configure new social identities and pathways for political action, while testing the limits of cultural representation to effect meaningful social change.

Book Lalo of Chemuyil

Download or read book Lalo of Chemuyil written by Barbara Khidirian and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prologue describes a letter of complaint written by the author in 1988, addressed to the Secretary of Tourism, Mexico City, Mexico. The letter details a frightening event that had taken place at Chemuyil. The story then begins in December 1986 when BARBARA (49) and husband EDDY (58) cross the Rio Grande in a motor home prepared to spend months exploring Mexico. Brief travel descriptions are sprinkled with humor as they make their way to the Caribbean where they discover Chemuyil, a dream come true beach. At Chemuyil they meet LALO, the proprietor of the palapa beach bar concession. Intermittent details describe how the couple liquidated assets to prepare for a once in a lifetime adventure, traveling in their new motor home indefinitely. The gist of the narrative is a first person view of both ordinary and extraordinary lives encountered during lengthy stays at Chemuyil, but the charismatic Lalo carries the book from the moment the readers meet him. A Don Juan character for sure, yet a much respected man, Lalo's personality defines the ebb and flow of the story. Barbara and Eddy become immersed in Lalo's web of passion, money, business, drugs, gambling, and government conflict. Lalo's biography is that of a hero/anti-hero who is very well known in Quintana Roo. However, Lalo suffered from delusional pain. His anguish revolved around losing his beloved Chemuyil, followed by mental conceptions of returning to Chemuyil, and finally psychological obsessions about how he would obtain another Chemuyil. Because Lalo's highs are both humorous and tragic, the author describes the book as a tragicomedy. Although Lalo's palapa bar is at the core of the drama, mixed into the story is nature at its best in an area of sea and jungle. Vivid descriptions also cover the after effects of hurricane Gilbert, as well as the role of the modern day Maya in the Yucatan. Barbara's fascination with Maya culture, Mexican politics, and her newly adopted Mexican family, connected her to insider information about another society. Her writing is an objective view of her inside connection, a summary of journal entries recorded while living in a motor home for three years . . . wintering at Chemuyil.

She is the creator of a radio series called "It's all About You" and a self-help column by the same name. Find out more about Nancy Joy and her work at www.heartlights.net. ***About the book*** Rose Jocelyn Winston is a prominent "fifty-something" therapist in her community, and yet she begins to realize her life is not all that rosy. Her only daughter, Emily, has rejected her, and she has found that all her attempts to help her clients seem to be falling flat. In the midst of her mid-life crises she prays for help and has a powerful dream that takes her on an incredible journey. She travels, eventually, to the Yucatan, where two special dolphins and a Spirit guide help her uncover the doorway to true emotional healing and conscious compassion. On her journey, Rose discovers this life-changing formula that brings the truth of emotions into perspective, providing an incredible life tool for everyone. ***A message from the author*** After over twenty years as a spiritual teacher following the emotional clues of life, I felt strongly that it was time to begin to share what I had learned along the way to a wider audience. For three years I tried writing a self-help book to no avail. I felt that no form of teaching is more life changing than for the reader to "feel" what the words were saying. So I set out to write a teaching novel. From the first day I began to write, Rose's story just spilled out of my heart and soul. I easily birthed The Wounded Heart, and I know there will be more to come. -NJH

As in Book II, Teoxi remains a wise and determined commander committed to restoring the dying Mayan Empire, preventing the spread of the blood-thirsty Aztecan Empire and challenging a prophecy that predicts the soon coming-end of the world he knows Teoxi fights a continuous battle against ignorance and superstition, walks with assurance into battle after battle against the Aztec and their minions, initiates overtures to the mountain-dwelling Incas as a bulwark against the Aztec. He returns always victorious from battles and skirmishes that span the former empire from sea to sea, and learns much from his terrifying brush with the invisible tribe of Chocoes--wielder of the tiny arrows that deliver silent death to all who venture blindly into their dark and mysterious forest. His quest continues without pause even after one of his finest--the silent and discreet female warrior named Night Orchid--offers to provide any support that a busy commander needs. The family bears the burden of continuous challenges facing Teoxi as he continues the fight to save himself and his village from a death sentence issued by an enemy desperate to kill him. Teoxi will win, but, the price paid by the Mayan Nation will be huge. Teoxi sees tomorrow, when the prophesied hordes armed with fire and thunder reach his shores, and--as his body bears the weight of a people and land that created a history the world will forever respect--he knows that wisdom, not power, will enable the spirit of his people to continue forever. That night, there was a party at the stronghold. We talked and laughed about the events of the day

Book Shamanic Journeys An Anthology

Download or read book Shamanic Journeys An Anthology written by Michael Drake and published by Independently published. This book was released on 2022-03-26 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of shamanic journeys that I have taken over my 35-year exploration of shamanism—the most ancient and most enduring spiritual tradition known to humanity. Each inner journey has a unique story about what led up to the trance experience, and what I learned from it. They were powerful life-changing events for me. Journey work is therapeutic and liberating. My trance experiences were healing, insightful and empowering. They often triggered the cathartic release of suppressed emotions producing feelings of peace and well-being. The process restores emotional health through expression and integration of emotions. Shamanism is based on the principle that innate wisdom and guidance can be accessed through the inner senses in ecstatic trance. We can engage the blueprint of our soul path through the vehicle of journeying. Shamanic journeying is a time-tested medium for individual self-realization. We can journey within to access wisdom and energies that can help awaken our soul calling and restore us to wholeness. It heightens our sense of mission and purpose, empowering our personal evolution. I invite you to journey with me into the inner realms of consciousness.
