Book Family Maps of Winston County Alabama Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Family Maps of Winston County Alabama Deluxe Edition written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Winston County, Alabama, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. 284 pages with 65 total maps What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 5822 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 56 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Download or read book Bitterly Divided written by David Williams and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The little-known history of anti-secession Southerners: “Absolutely essential Civil War reading.” —Booklist, starred review Bitterly Divided reveals that the South was in fact fighting two civil wars—the external one that we know so much about, and an internal one about which there is scant literature and virtually no public awareness. In this fascinating look at a hidden side of the South’s history, David Williams shows the powerful and little-understood impact of the thousands of draft resisters, Southern Unionists, fugitive slaves, and other Southerners who opposed the Confederate cause. “This fast-paced book will be a revelation even to professional historians. . . . His astonishing story details the deep, often murderous divisions in Southern society. Southerners took up arms against each other, engaged in massacres, guerrilla warfare, vigilante justice and lynchings, and deserted in droves from the Confederate army . . . Some counties and regions even seceded from the secessionists . . . With this book, the history of the Civil War will never be the same again.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Most Southerners looked on the conflict with the North as ‘a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight,’ especially because owners of 20 or more slaves and all planters and public officials were exempt from military service . . . The Confederacy lost, it seems, because it was precisely the kind of house divided against itself that Lincoln famously said could not stand.” —Booklist, starred review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Winston County, Alabama is dotted with small communities with names such as Deer, Wood, Blooming Youth, Brown's Creek, Bold Springs, and Rocky Plains. These and other areas in northwest Alabama were settled by hardy individuals who worked hard to support themselves and raise their children. When the farm work was done, members of these isolated communities socialized with log rollings, barn raisings, and Sunday Schools. Growing out of the devotion to religion and each other, the region became known as one of the Sacred Harp and Gospel singing capitols of the South. This book of newspaper clippings from the Double Springs and Haleyville papers captures the day to day life of the people who inhabited the communities making up Western Winston County. In this volume, the reseacher with ancestors in area will learn more about the times and the issues important to the communities over a period of six decades during the 1900s.
