Book The Problem of the Cross Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Problem of the Cross Classic Reprint written by Vernon Faithful Storr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Cross Atonement in the scheme of Christian theology. I have tried in these lectures to indicate the form which I think our interpretation of the Cross will take. We shall make central the thought that God suffers with His universe. One of the most urgent needs for theology at this moment is to think out the relation between the twin concep tions of Transcendence and Immanence. The Cross of Christ. Certainly Wins a new significance when set against the background of the divine immanence. But the Cross was no defeat, but a triumph. That is the cardinal message of Christianity. Hence the conception of a God who suffers with His world must be shown to be compatible with the conception of a God who in suffering is transcendently Victorious other wise the Cross spells weakness instead of power. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Triumph of the Cross Every syllable of this profession of Savonarola's faith in the supremacy of the successor is expunged There are no asterisks to show that words are left out. There is no footnote, no word in the Preface, to explain the uh pardonable liberty of the translator. A comma is put after the words loosed in heaven, and the translator continues, - as though this were the author's continua tion, -from which we may see that Jesus Christ, down to the words He shall sit and rule upon the throne of David, etc The entire passage about the successor of St. Peter, Hence it follows, is summarily omitted from what purports to be a translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ What more embarrassing, than to be oppressed with a sense of the grandeur of your subject, and yet crushed with a consciousness of incapacity to do it justice! In whatever aspect we view the subject, Christianity is transcendent alike, in claim and disclosure. The supernatural and extraordinary, however, connected with the Christian religion, so far from furnishing a presumption against its truth, suggests, in fact, a strong antecedent probability in favor of its divine original. Book History of the Cross of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Cross of Christ Classic Reprint written by William Rounseville Alger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Cross of Christ The idea of this little book was suggested to the author by perusing cruciana, an interesting work, by John Holland, published in England in 1835. Some of the quotations, and some of the facts embodied in the followmg sketch, were derived from that source. But the plan, execution, uses of the present essay are, in most respects, so different from those of Mr. Hol land's volume, that no further acknowledgment or refer ence to his work seems to be required. The hope of the author in presenting this humble production to the public, is that it may awaken Christian feelings in those who read it, by showing how the Crossof Christ justly appeals to the reason, - t_he imagination, and the heart of a living'believer. Graciana is a collection of miscel laneous information and literature concerning the Cross. J usti Lipsi De Cruce, - a Latin book printed in 1598 is a literal account, with engravings, of the Cross, its various shapes, and its use as an instrument of torture in different countries and times. The present work gives the symbolic history of that now hallowed object - thelessons taught by its fortunes and uses. This field the writer believes to have been hitherto unoccupied; and it seemed to him so capable, that he trusts a sufficient apology will be found in what he has written, for pub lishing it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Cross: A Contribution to the Doctrine of Christian Sanctity The cordial reception given to this book in five previous editions; the testimonies from far and near to definite blessing as the result of pondering and appropriating its truths; the exceedingly sympathetic welcome given to the book by the reviewers, rep resenting nearly every section of the Christian Church; the demand for the volume now that it is out of print - are surely sufficient reasons to warrant the issue of another edition. The book first appeared more than a quarter of a century ago. Instead of finding it necessary to change or modify this teaching of the Cross, I find myself in accord with it more thoroughly than ever. I have carefully revised these pages, and now send forth the book again on an errand, as I firmly believe, of still larger usefulness. Book The Meaning of the Cross

Download or read book The Meaning of the Cross written by Gordon Watt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning of the Cross: Studies of the Cross of Christ Throughout the Bible The new birth becomes an actual experience the moment that we receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour. By that act, on the ground of the atoning sacrifice Of the Son of God, we receive new life, even the life of God; we pass into a new stage, that of spiritual regeneration, regenera tion by the Holy Spirit; and we enter into a new position, that Of being the children of God. N ow I dare not and can not emphasize too strongly the necessity of the new birth, simply because the new birth produces the new creation, and the new creation is God's imperative demand and requirement for new life and for new service. One of our old Scottish preachers once said, All man kind hangs either at the cradle Of Adam or, at the. Cradle of Christ, and we have to choose. I venture to say that the ordinary church-goer has little or no idea Of the mean ing of that, and yet it is one of the essential facts Of the Word of God. The Old head of the race was Adam, and Adam failed and fell, and the Old creation failed in him and fell with him. It is very important to be quite clear about that. I want to quote from a great Bible teacher: If man never fell, then the Christ Of the Gospels lived and taught and died unnecessarily. These are words that ought to be placarded abroad to-day: That man is con sistent who abandons all, rather than he who, professing still to own allegiance to Christ, denies some parts of the whole. It IS a pity that all of our liberal theologians could not read these words. These are words by J. Campbell Morgan in the introduction to the book of Genesis in his Analyzed Bible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Cross Doroshevitch is a liberal and a progressive, but he is a real Russian and a Christian. This breathless, almost desperate story yet breathes a tender love toward the individual, and there is that Christian mysticism that can see in the white crosses over the fugitives' graves Georgian crosses on the breast of the suffer ing earth. The Georgian is the Russian equivalent of our Victoria Cross, given for valour and self-sacrifice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Red Cap on the Cross Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Cap on the Cross Cross, typifying for us all Life, not Death. He whom we believe was the Son of God is for us not slain, not dead, but living to give inspiration and help to all those who will turn to Him; it is this message which this book has to give. It is no fancy picture which Mr. Roberts puts before us when he tells us to think of the Red Cap on the Cross, for what is it the red cap symbolizes for those of us who to the best of our ability are striving to learn from Christ how to live? Surely it means the oneness of human life, the sacredness of each man and woman, the breaking down of all barriers, revealing mankind as neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, but one great family of one blood the world over. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church A delineation, briefly presenting in its leading features the historic course of development which gave rise successively to these main forms and phases of the religion of the Cross, may, on account of the beauty and grandeur of its object, be regarded as secured against the suspicion of micrologic dul ness. The history of the Cross necessarily presents a reflected image of the history of Christianity itself, and indeed a more instructive and important one than any other similar contem plation, under the veil of an emblem, of the rise and growth of our religion hitherto, which might in any way be attempted. Specially upon a closer examination of its preparatory history - in the remarkable and partly enigmatical airy reflections which, in the form of so many a cruciform symbol upon the art monuments of the pre-christian as of modern Heathen dom, serve as heralds and precursors of the cultus of the Cross in the Christian Church - does our subject awaken interest in every one at all endowed with historic culture, and a sense for the appreciation of higher ethical endeavours and problems. The title Contribution to the Philosophy of History, pertains with unquestionable right to a treatment of the subject designed and executed from such standpoint; even though from time to time an indispensable entering into the details of the controversies with regard to the archeology of worship or of art, as also an examination of the more important phenomena of the dogmatic or mystic-ascetic literature bearing upon our subject, should occasion many deviations from the mode of treatment ordinarily prevailing in works on the philosophy of history.
