Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Croonian Lectures on the Psychology of the Special Senses and Their Functional Disorders The Croonian Lectures appeared in a shortened form in the Lancet soon after their delivery. They are now published in full with the addition of some illustrative cases. I am anxious to acknowledge my great indebtedness to the Medical Officers who worked with me before and since the War at Guy's Hospital, and during the War in Lemnos, Salonica, Oxford, Netley and the Seale Hayne Military Hospital, as most of the investigations upon which these Lectures are based were carried out in conjunction with them, and the description of many of the actual cases are taken from their notes. I wish especially to mention Major W. Johnson, M.C., Major J. L. M. Symns, Major J. F. Venables, Captain A. Wilson Gill, Captain R. G. Gordon, Captain G. MacGregor, Captain J. W. Moore of the U.S.A. Army Medical Service, Captain W. R. Reynell, Captain C. H. Ripman, Captain A. Robin, Captain S. H. Wilkinson, and Dr. R. Gainsborough. The frontispiece has been reproduced from a copy of La Verite des Miracles in the possession of the Royal Society of Medicine, by kind permission of the Librarian, Sir John Macalister. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of the Special Senses I hope that this volume may be of service to two classes of readers. Students of Psychology may desire to obtain more information regarding the physiological side of the senses than is usually found in works professedly dealing with psychology. I think such students will find this book of use if they read it in conjunction with Professor Myers' admirable treatise on Experimental Psychology. Another class of readers which I have had in mind are those who are either taking up physiology as a branch of liberal education, or with a view of presenting themselves for certain higher professional examinations. In either case a somewhat more detailed knowledge of physiology is required than can be obtained from the general textbooks of the subject, while time hardly permits of much use being made of original sources of information. The necessity in such cases arises for books intermediate between the text-book and the original memoir. In most branches of physiology this want is abundantly supplied, but I am not acquainted with any such aids to study in the case of the senses. This hook may help to fill the gap. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Brain tells the full story of neuroscience, from antiquity to the present day. It describes how we have come to understand the biological nature of the brain, beginning in prehistoric times, and progressing to the twentieth century with the development of Modern Neuroscience. This is the first time a history of the brain has been written in a narrative way, emphasizing how our understanding of the brain and nervous system has developed over time, with the development of the disciplines of anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and neurosurgery. The book covers: beliefs about the brain in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome the Medieval period, Renaissance and Enlightenment the nineteenth century the most important advances in the twentieth century and future directions in neuroscience. The discoveries leading to the development of modern neuroscience gave rise to one of the most exciting and fascinating stories in the whole of science. Written for readers with no prior knowledge of the brain or history, the book will delight students, and will also be of great interest to researchers and lecturers with an interest in understanding how we have arrived at our present knowledge of the brain.

Book The Foundations of Phenomenological Psychotherapy

Download or read book The Foundations of Phenomenological Psychotherapy written by Giampiero Arciero and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses selected central questions in phenomenological psychology, a discipline that investigates the experience of self that emerges over the course of an individual’s life, while also outlining a new method, the formal indication, as a means of accessing personal experience while remaining faithful to its uniqueness. In phenomenological psychology, the psyche no longer refers to an isolated self that remains unchanged by life’s changing situations, but is rather a phenomenon (ipseity) which manifests itself and constantly takes form over the course of a person’s unique existence. Thus, the formal indication allows us to study the way in which ipseity relates to the world in different situations, in a way that holds different meanings for different people. Based on this new approach, phenomenological psychotherapy marks a transition from a mode of grasping the truth about oneself through reflection, to a mode of accessing the disclosure of self through a work of self-transformation (the care of self) that requires the person to actually change her position on herself. By putting forward this method, the authors shed new light on the dynamic interplay between a person’s historicity and uniqueness on the one hand, and the related physiopathological mechanisms on the other, providing evidence from the fields of genetics, cardiology, the neurosciences and psychiatry. The book will appeal to a broad readership, from psychiatrists, psychologist and psychotherapists, to researchers in these fields.

Book excerpt: Neuroscience is a comprehensive textbook created primarily for medical and premedical students; it emphasises the structure of the nervous system, the correlation of structure and function, and the structure/function relationships particularly pertinent to the practice of medicine. Although not primarily about pathology, the book includes the basis of a variety of neurological disorders. It could serve equally well as a text for undergraduate neuroscience courses in which many of the students are premeds. Being both comprehensive and authoritative, it is also appropriate for graduate and professional use. The new edition offers a host of new features including a new art program and the completely revised Sylvius for Neuroscience: Visual Glossary of Human Neuroanatomy, an interactive CD-ROM reference guide to the human nervous system. Major changes to the new edition also include: additional neuroanatomical content, including two appendices-(1) The Brainstem and Cranial Nerves and (2) Vascular Supply, the Meninges, and the Ventricular System; and updated and new boxes on neurological and psychiatric diseases.

Download or read book Psychiatry written by Konstantinos N. Fountoulakis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was the end product of life experiences, thoughts and intellectual wanderings of the author, who through his career and for the last twenty years was always serving all the three aspects of a Psychiatrist: He is a clinician, a researcher and an academic teacher. The book includes a comprehensive history of Psychiatry since antiquity and until today, with an emphasis not only on main events but also specifically and with much detail and explanations, on the chain of events that led to a particular development. At the center of this work is the question ‘What is mental illness?’ and ‘Does free will exist?’. These are questions which tantalize Psychiatrists, neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers, patients and their families and the sensitive and educated lay persons alike. Thus, the book includes a comprehensive review and systematic elaboration on the definition and the concept of mental illness, a detailed discussion on the issue of free will as well as the state of the art of contemporary Psychiatry and the socio-political currents it has provoked. Finally the book includes a description of the academic, social and professional status of Psychiatry and Psychiatrists and a view of future needs and possible developments. A last moment addition was the chapter on conspiracy theories, as a consequence of the experience with the social media and the public response to the COVID-19 outbreak which coincided with the final stage of the preparation of the book. Their study is an excellent opportunity to dig deep into the relation among human psychology, mental health, the society and politics and to swim in intellectually dangerous waters.
