Book excerpt: With his Letter of 1493 to the court of Spain, Christopher Columbus heralded his first voyage to the present-day Americas, creating visions that seduced the European imagination and birthing a fascination with those "new" lands and their inhabitants that continues today. Columbus's epistolary announcement travelled from country to country in a late-medieval media event -- and the rest, as has been observed, is history. The Letter has long been the object of speculation concerning its authorship and intention: British historian Cecil Jane questions whether Columbus could read and write prior to the first voyage while Demetrio Ramos argues that King Ferdinand and a minister composed the Letter and had it printed in the Spanish folio. The Letter has figured in studies of Spanish Imperialism and of Discovery and Colonial period history, but it also offers insights into Columbus's passions and motives as he reinvents himself and retails his vision of Peter Martyr's Novus orbis to men and women for whom Columbus was as unknown as the places he claimed to have visited. The central feature of the book is its annotated variorum edition of the Spanish Letter, together with an annotated English translation and word and name glossaries. A list of terms from early print-period and manuscript cultures supports those critical discussions. In the context of her text-based reading, the author addresses earlier critical perspectives on the Letter, explores foundational questions about its composition, publication and aims, and proposes a theory of authorship grounded in text, linguistics, discourse, and culture.

This study is the first to consider how this romance developed from a local legend to European bestseller, analysing versions in French, German, Castilian, Dutch, and English. It addresses questions on how to study medieval literature from a European perspective, moving beyond national canons, and reading M lusine's bodily mutability as a metaphor for how the romance itself moves and transforms across borders. It also analyses key changes to the romance's content, form, and material presentation - including its images - and traces how the people who produced and consumed this romance shaped its international transmission and spread. The author shows how M lusine's character is adapted within each local context, while also uncovering previously unknown connections between the different branches of this multilingual tradition. Moving beyond established paradigms of separate national traditions, manuscript versus print, and medieval versus Renaissance literature, the book integrates literary analysis with art historical and book historical approaches. She is also the first English-language scholar to treat the author of this influential work – the Renaissance physician Bernardino de Laredo, a pivotal figure in the transition from medieval to early modern spirituality on the Iberian peninsula and a source for Teresa of Avila’s mystical language.

The book they are reading is the Spanish chivalric romance Amadís de Gaula, known in English as Amadis de Gaule. Famous throughout the sixteenth century as the pinnacle of its fictional genre, the cultural functions of Amadis were further elaborated by the publication of Cervantes's Don Quixote in 1605, in which Amadis features as Quixote's favourite book. Amadis thereby becomes, as the philosopher Ortega y Gasset terms it, 'enclosed' within the modern novel and part of the imaginative landscape of British reader-authors such Mary Shelley, Smollett, Keats, Southey, Scott, and Thackeray. Amadis in English ranges from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, demonstrating through this 'biography' of a book the deep cultural, intellectual, and political connections of English, French, and Spanish literature across five centuries. This volume, with many discussions of annotations or marginal notes (postils), aims to tease out one of the principal threads of the over-arching theme of what might be termed 'Lost and Found in Translation' with regard to Early Modern Architecture. Citation of texts in relation to Early Modern architectural design, treatise writing and theory, has long been studied, but mostly in ways which have never clearly distinguished between three important but different terms: mindset, citation and quotation. This volume charts citation from Filarete and ancient descriptions of Near Eastern Architecture, to difficulties in understanding Vitruvius, and Lost and found in Fra Giocondo's Vitruvius. The investigation then broadens to Tracing Renaissance Italian Architectural Books in colonial Mexico and an examination of reverse ekphrasis and Early Modern Architecture. It then turns to twisted words and borrowed wisdom: misleading citation in Scamozzi's Idea dell'architettura universale (1615), before heading East to discuss formats and functions of large-scale calligraphy in late-Ming and Qing-period China and the reconstruction of architectural spaces. Turning to Quotation, the investigation begins with Pirro Ligorio, the 'Megala' ship and the Cortile del Belvedere, and invention, imitation and reiteration: the case of Bramante's Palazzo Caprini and its progeny. Then follows Quoting from memory: centralized models and basilica systems in early counter-reformation Venice, followed by 'Borrominismo' in eighteenth century Lisbon, and old form with new function: Villa Emo-Amtshaus Wörlitz, and concludes with found and reshaped in translation: architectural models between centre and periphery. An important reading for anybody interested in Early Modern Architecture.

The broad cultural, historical, and geographical scope of the Jianyang book trade makes it an ideal subject for the study of publishing in China.
