The creed represents the belief of the average Briton about the best things in life and conduct. The implications of these beliefs have been traced, and the argument of the book is that they lead towards those central truths which are a heritage common to all the various forms of Christianity. Frequently, it is true, the average man has little or no connexion with the Churches. Moreover, he knows that his opinions, for example, on divorce, are repudiated by some Churches, his attitude towards gambling by others. Hence he is apt to imagine that his religion, such as he recog nizes it to be, is not particularly connected with Christianity, and he does not realize how essentially Christian are his beliefs about the chief values of life. Those who are acquainted with the moral ideals of the world before Christ, even as represented by the great thinkers of Greece, realize the vast difference Christ's teaching has made; for example the 'high-minded' man whom Aristotle so admires repels the modern mind. The reason is that the Christian ideal has transformed our ideals. Though virtue is the same for us as for Aristotle, its expres sion is not. The things men most surely believe 3. But we seem to forget that what it claims to be is a living Kingdom of Christ; by which it means that it attempts to assimilate to itself the entire body of human affairs, whether internal or external, whether private or social, so that they shall obviously and visibly display the dominion of a single master-mind, the Mind of Christ. The validity, indeed, of this dominion, its potency, its authority - these depend on the literal reality of certain historical facts. If Christ did not rise again the third day, no such dominion can exist. But, if the dominion exists at all, then it exists in the form of what I have spoken: and, if so, then it is, through out its length and breadth, the manifestation of a Personal Will in action Upon the affairs of earth. This is the dogmatic ideal of church life which has become so strongly intrenched in the thinking of many Christians that it seems to them like treachery to the cause of Christ even to call it into question. One of the most significant features of the present religious situation is the growing discontent with the dogmatic ideal of church life. The feeling is wide spread that the creeds, which in the historic orthodox churches stand for Christianity, are in their present form the survival of a thought world which has been outgrown, and that they are consequently a hinderance to faith rather than its bulwark.
