Book The Creed in Daily Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Creed in Daily Life Classic Reprint written by W. B. Russell-Caley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed in Daily Life The War is turning men's thoughts to the essentials of life. The artificial and superficial are receding into the background, as men are brought face to face with the realities of life. Religion to thousands of men has become a real force in life and heart, and has ceased to be held merely as a pious opinion. The formal recital of a Creed has given way to something deeper and more real, and men are overcoming even by their faith. It is therefore fitting that at such a time as this the facts contained in the old Creed should be presented as the hope of mankind. The Creed is not a Parable, but a statement of facts upon which the Church herself rests, and which forms her message to the world. I am glad, therefore, that, at this time, Mr. Russell Caley is issuing this thoughtfully-prepared volume of Sermons, which sets forth the positive teaching of Christianity, together with such helpful suggestions as to how it should affect the lives of men. Faith without works is dead, and what the world wants to-day is a Faith which can, by revolution izing the life of the individual, gradually revolutionize the life of the world itself. It is because I think this volume of Sermons will be helpful in that direction that I am warmly commending it. Book The Gospel and the Creed Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel and the Creed Classic Reprint written by Thomas B. Strong and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Creed 'The Purpose and Aim of this Congress is', according to the statement on the front page of its programme, 'to extend the Knowledge of Catholic Faith and practice at home and abroad, and, by this means, to bring men and women to a true realization of our Lord Jesus Christ, as their personal Saviour and King.' The ultimate purpose here stated is one with which every Christian man must have sympathy: and it appeals with special force to members of the Church of England, as it combines in its purview the evangelical message of Salvation through Christ and the reference to Catholic faith and practice. I do not think, therefore, that I need, in any way, to apologize for my presence here to-day; though I am, of course, aware that some, perhaps many, of those here present may support beliefs and practices which do not seem to me to be either rightly described as Catholic, or capable, intrinsically, of valid defence. I could not, for instance, accept many of the statements in the Handbook, under the heading 'misunderstood subjects'. I do hold, and in this I understand that we here I think it will become increasingly manifest throughout Christendom - are all likely to be agreed, that the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the Saviour of man, which is the divine answer to the doubts and hopes of man, will make firm and stable progress when it is presented by a society 'perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgement', 'speaking the same thing'. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyman and Christianity: A Working Creed As the title shows, this book is concerned with a Creed, but it is not meant to be a theology or an apologetic. The creed represents the belief of the average Briton about the best things in life and conduct. The implications of these beliefs have been traced, and the argument of the book is that they lead towards those central truths which are a heritage common to all the various forms of Christianity. Frequently, it is true, the average man has little or no connexion with the Churches. Moreover, he knows that his opinions, for example, on divorce, are repudiated by some Churches, his attitude towards gambling by others. Hence he is apt to imagine that his religion, such as he recog nizes it to be, is not particularly connected with Christianity, and he does not realize how essentially Christian are his beliefs about the chief values of life. Those who are acquainted with the moral ideals of the world before Christ, even as represented by the great thinkers of Greece, realize the vast difference Christ's teaching has made; for example the 'high-minded' man whom Aristotle so admires repels the modern mind. The reason is that the Christian ideal has transformed our ideals. Though virtue is the same for us as for Aristotle, its expres sion is not. The things men most surely believe 3. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed or a Philosophy The Church has been, and still is, the great school of manners. It has purified and sweetened civilisa tion, and has produced the gentleman and the lady of our times; but an enemy has sown tares in it, and these tares are apt to overshadow and stifle the crop. Anything like an attack upon current phrases and ideas, implies the charge of heresy, and against that every religious community has always had its weapons, and always will have. I will not attempt any lengthened apology for the position in which I now return to the subject of this volume. The world is rather sick of apologies, and is of the opinion that, so far as a man excuses himself, so far does he accuse himself also, seeing that his life ought to speak for itself. Book Creed and Character Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Creed and Character Now, this is what we are so strangely given to ignore. We discuss Christianity as a set of theological ideas, which have more or less value; or we examine into its facts and records, by which it subjects itself to historical criticism. But we seem to forget that what it claims to be is a living Kingdom of Christ; by which it means that it attempts to assimilate to itself the entire body of human affairs, whether internal or external, whether private or social, so that they shall obviously and visibly display the dominion of a single master-mind, the Mind of Christ. The validity, indeed, of this dominion, its potency, its authority - these depend on the literal reality of certain historical facts. If Christ did not rise again the third day, no such dominion can exist. But, if the dominion exists at all, then it exists in the form of what I have spoken: and, if so, then it is, through out its length and breadth, the manifestation of a Personal Will in action Upon the affairs of earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Daily Life, or Precepts and Prescriptions for Christian Living The following reflections are intended to act on the minds and hearts of those who are very busy by day, and very weary at eventide. Every Christian must descend from Tabor and its bright radiance into the low level of every-day life. We need more religion in such circumstances, and less theology. We require not arid dogmas, however orthodox, but warm joys - sustaining strength - cheering hopes, and inspiring expectations. We need also direction, guidance, encouragement. What so powerful a check to evil, or so comforting an assurance of peace, as a sense of a presence that encourages us in the paths of righteousness, and encompasses us with a ceaseless defence? True spiritual religion will enter into every relation, transaction, toil; and not only regulate them, but give energy of heart and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: In the Light of Modern Discussion I rejoice to believe that we are all getting nearer to Christ and therefore nearer to one another. In using the ancient creeds and seeking to understand them we need not be thought unbrotherly or divisive the Church has a common and precious inheritance. I am glad to adopt the words of the Unitarian, Dr E. H. Sears. In his book The Heart of Christ, he says: Those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as the supreme authority and guide, and enter more into his all-revealing mind, are making progress toward the harmonizing truths which he represents. However wide apart they may be at the start their progress is ever on converging lines. Essential truth becomes more and more central and manifest, the'non-essential falls away to its subordinate place, and orthodox and unorthodox move alike toward a higher and higher unity. It is not that one sect is making a conquest of the others, but Jesus Christ is making a conquest of us all There is no rea son then to be afraid to know what the Church believes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Creed and the Creeds: Their Function in Religion, Being the Bampton Lectures of 1911 It may be only another instance of that illusion of Greatness, which seizes every age and every student of his own age; but to this student of our time it does seem that the time is great. It is in travail with a birth, magnum incrementum, a new vision of Faith and of the Fortune of Man; a vision to which creeds and their interpretations, in common with all human forms of sound words, ' are more inadequate than in our humility already we confess them. For the churchmen of to-day this travail-hour, as all such hours, inspires hopes for the Church or else fears, according to the temperament and the measure of faith.' It may be that, in the total consciousness of our communion, the pulse of fear beats at this moment louder than the pulse of hope. The more is the reason that, if for any one the happier note is the more insis tent on the car, he should make report of what he hears himself. Book The Coming Creed Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Coming Creed Classic Reprint written by Parley Paul Womer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Creed The question as to whether Christianity should be considered primarily a system of doctrine, or a way of life, is of fundamental importance. For centuries the former idea has overwhelmingly predominated. Life has been subordinated to dogma. The effort of the church has been to crowd the eternal truths of the Gospel into narrow and unelastic creedal statements and to make assent to these the condition of its fellowship. This is the dogmatic ideal of church life which has become so strongly intrenched in the thinking of many Christians that it seems to them like treachery to the cause of Christ even to call it into question. One of the most significant features of the present religious situation is the growing discontent with the dogmatic ideal of church life. The feeling is wide spread that the creeds, which in the historic orthodox churches stand for Christianity, are in their present form the survival of a thought world which has been outgrown, and that they are consequently a hinderance to faith rather than its bulwark. The writer profoundly sympathizes with this feeling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
