Book Will James the Gilt Edged Cowboy

Download or read book Will James the Gilt Edged Cowboy written by Anthony A. Amaral and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will James has been dead for more than two decades, but the books that flowed so prolifically from his pen, and his great gift as painter and illustrator, still keep his name perpetually alive. James' writing, either in fiction, or serious study, possessed the vernacular and earthy grain of the cow-camp and the sweep and flavor of the open range. From the first word he ever wrote for publication, from the first sketch he ever produced, rings the authenticity of a man who truly has known the West. There is no doubt that Will James was the cowboy genius. But, since his untimely death in 1942, every attempt to run down the facts of life pertaining to this taciturn and silent novelist and artist, has met with failure on the part of the biographer. His Lone Cowboy, universally accepted as the autobiography of Will James, has just as universally fell apart when placed under the glass of scholarly scrutiny. The day Will James died, the riddle of Will James alive was as poignantly real as the day his first novel or first illustration appeared. To ferret out the story of the real Will James, Anthony Amaral emerges as a literary detective of the highest order. But the real story of the real Will James, as told in this remarkable biography, rivals any novel ever to come from the facile pen of James himself. While its candid portrayal will shock and surprise many who imagined they knew the Will James story, it in no way undermines the man's intrinsic greatness in the field of art and letters. Honest and understanding in the handling of the great revealment, Anthony Amaral has not sacrificed scholarship in telling the exciting story of this man's life -- Book jacket.

Book Charles M Russell

Download or read book Charles M Russell written by John Taliaferro and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive biography of Charles M. Russell examines the colorful life and times of Montana’s famed Cowboy Artist. Born to an affluent St. Louis family in 1864, young Russell read thrilling tales of the West and filled sketchbooks with imagined frontier scenes. At sixteen he left home and headed west to become a cowboy. In Montana Territory he consorted with cowpunchers, Indians, preachers, saloon keepers, and prostitutes, while celebrating the waning American frontier’s glory days in some 4,000 paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures. Before his death in 1926, Russell saw the world change dramatically, and the West he loved passed into legend. By then he was revered as one of the country’s ranking Western artist with works displayed in the finest galleries, his romantic vision of the Old West forever shaping our own. Taliaferro reveals the man behind the myth in his multifaceted complexity: extraordinarily gifted, self-effacing, charming, mischievous, and playful, a friend to rough frontier denizens and Hollywood stars alike. The author also explores Russell’s controversial partnership with his fiery young wife, Nancy, whose ambition and business savvy helped establish Russell as one of America’s most popular artists.

Book excerpt: Relive the Old West with illustrated biographies of Western luminaries like “Buffalo Bill” Cody, Charles Goodnight, Bill Pickett, William and George Calloway, Joseph McCoy, and more! The glory days of the Old West cowboy lasted for only a couple of decades, but during this short time the cowboy's reputation became a fundamental part of the American mythos. The Cowboys delves deep into the world of these iconic men. It gives an intimate insight into the tough working conditions of the cowboy's working kit, which has now achieved iconic status. This book even investigates the legendary Cowboy Code that governed the conduct and behavior of these rough-hewn men. The Cowboys examines the wider social impact of the nineteenth-century American cattle industry, which not only encouraged the building of railroads and new cattle towns in the western states, but also drew many different kinds of men to the frontier. Investors, freed slaves, crooks, ex-soldiers, and other would-be adventurers all took the opportunity to make a new start as cowhands and ranchers in the Wild West. The Cowboys investigates the life of the average cowboy and tells the stories of some of the most successful cattlemen. Even today, American culture continues to evoke the iconic persona of the cowboy through rodeos, movies, television, toys, books, and music. The Cowboys is a celebration of all aspects of the extraordinary cowboy legend.

Book Mel Renfro

Download or read book Mel Renfro written by Bob Gill and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mel Renfro: Forever a Cowboy, an authorized biography, relates the life journey of an early Cowboy legend. Unlike today, the salaries in the '60s were miniscule and the good players usually stayed with one team. When Mel Renfro was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1964, the struggling team got one of the nation's top two-sport athletes. Not only was the native Oregonian multitalented in both football and track and field, he received high school and college All-American honors. If not for his love for football, he may have been an Olympic decathlon medalist. After Mel arrived in Dallas, Coach Tom Landry recognized his talents and started him in the lineup. Mel responded by setting team records, and he was selected to play in the first of his ten consecutive Pro Bowls, becoming MVP in the 1970 game. Being a member of "Doomsday Defense I," the Cowboy defenders who played six years together from 1966-1971 and led the team to the Super Bowl VI win, was the highlight for Mel. His play as the best "shutdown" cornerback for years earned him the Cowboy Ring of Honor, and after an anxious 14-year wait, a Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in 1996. Forever a Cowboy also reveals Mel's human side, discussing how he dealt with his life-after-football and the struggles that came with it. But the completion of the loop as a Cowboy legend was Mel's selection to the Hall of Fame in 1996. Today, Mel still lives in Dallas and wears his two Super Bowl rings proudly.
