Book The Corrosion of Iron and Steel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Corrosion of Iron and Steel Classic Reprint written by Alfred Sang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion of Iron and Steel The corrosion of iron and steel is one of the leading questions of the day among engineers, metallurgists and manufacturers. Information on the subject is widely scattered and its value is thereby greatly reduced. This essay is based on a paper read before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, at Pittsburgh, December 15, 1908, and published in the Proceedings. The work is in great measure a compilation and study of the results obtained by other investi gators and is intended as a compendium of the subject suitable for reference. I am indebted to Mr. Harrison W. Craver for the free use of the extremely valuable bibliography of the subject published by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, which is reproduced in condensed form at the end of the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion of Iron The carbonic - acid theory is the one most generally held, and usually presumes that without the interaction of carbonic or. Some other acid the oxidation, or better, the hydroxylation, of iron can not take place. The theory is best set forth in the words of a text book recently published. The process of rusting is a cyclical one, and three factors play an important p'arti (1) An acid, (2) water, (3) oxygen. The process of rusting is always started by an acid (even the weak carbonic acid suffices); the acid changes the metal to a ferrous salt with evolution of hydrogen: Water and oxygen now act upon the ferrous salt, causing the iron in this salt to separate out as ferric hydroxide, setting free the same amount of acid which was used in forming the ferrous salt. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion and Preservation of Iron and Steel IT has been found a difficult matter to bring a work of this kind up to date. New material which touches directly, or in directly, ou the corrosion and preservation of iron and steel, is appearing almost daily in the technical press of the world. The authors have made the effort to include or mention the results of all recent investigations and original researches touching on the subject which have appeared up to the time of going to press, even if to some extent the systematic arrangement of the work has had to suffer by frequent insertions. Although a consider able space is given to the description and results of the researches of one of the authors working in a Government laboratory, no material is included from this source that has not already been printed in official bulletins for free distribution to all persons desiring it. While the book is written mainly to elucidate the electrolytic theory of corrosion (which some one has humorously referred to as The New Thought in the protection problem), it is nevertheless hoped that it will be found useful and suggestive even to those to whom the theory does not especially appeal. Book The Corrosion of Iron and Its Alloys

Download or read book The Corrosion of Iron and Its Alloys written by Russell Samuel Howard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion of Iron and Its Alloys: Thesis In nature everything is subject to deterioration, varying from those substances decomposed by light to those only decomposed by the strong est agents. The deterioration of metals as effected by alloying is the sub ject of this paper and perhaps.no subject is of more vital importance to the builder and interest to the chemist than this one of corrosion. It is a dif ficult matter to make a study of this kind of any practical value because of the difference in condition imposed upon the sample in the laboratory and when in actual use. An example of this disagreement between laboratory results and practical experience_is very well demonstrated in the report The Use of Concrete in Sea Water. From the laboratory experiment it was found that concrete could not be used in sea water; but as a matter of fact it is used, and with good results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rustless Coatings: Corrosion and Electrolysis of Iron and Steel Since the publication of the papers "Rustless Coatings for Iron and Steel," in the years 1894-1901, the author has received many requests from engineers and others to present them in a more available form than in the Transactions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and in the columns of the various American and foreign technical journals. The subjects have been mainly rewritten and new matter added to bring them up to date. The characteristics of oils, pigments, and paints that form the principal protective coatings for ferric and other structures are given at length under their respective chapters. It is believed by the author that the collected data will afford a reliable source of information of what paints are composed and what may be expected of them. The technical journals have given a great deal of space to the subject of proctective coatings for metals, but the data are not always available when comparison with some recent result or experiment is required. The author acknowledges the assistance afforded him in the collection of the data, by the technical press and nearly two hundred other sources, and he has, as far as possible, given credit for the same. The subjects are so grouped in the work, and so detailed in the index, that the busy man can find the data that will bear on the case in hand and enable him to avoid some, if not all, of the unfavorable results that have attended previous applications of some misleading trade-mark mixture. Most of the analyses and tests of the commercial pigments and paints have been repeated many times without any material discrepancy from the data herein given. The results from the use of many of these paints are apparent in the excessive and continual corrosion of important ferric structures everywhere. He that runs may not always read, but he can at least see; hence should be able to profit by the experience of those who have preceded him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Corrosion: Anti-Fouling and Anti-Corrosive Paints Wherever rust has once formed, its further occurrence is a natural sequence, and its prevention becomes impossible by any known means unless the affected places are perfectly freed from all traces of the oxide. So far from being a Solid, coherent mass, rust is loose and porous, absorbing and persistently retaining water, and, with the conjunction of atmospheric air, assists in the conversion of such portions of the iron as have hitherto remained intact. This is the reason why Sheet iron, under conditions favouring rust for mation, is finally converted entirely into rust, and though retaining its form as a pipe, no longer consists of iron but of a compound which breaks in pieces under very Slight pressure. To this continuous development of rust is also due the complete corrosion of rivets and screws in iron structures, and the circumstance that iron pipes of several millimetres in thickness laid in the earth are entirely con verted into rust and break in pieces or crumble away when brought to the daylight again. Book The Fouling and Corrosion of Iron Ships

Download or read book The Fouling and Corrosion of Iron Ships written by Charles F. T. Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fouling and Corrosion of Iron Ships: Causes and Means of Prevention, the Mode of Application to the Existing Iron-Clads The continued want of success which has hitherto attended all the attempts, which have been brought to a practical test, for pre venting the fouling and corrosion of iron ships, and the many cases of fouling and corrosion which have come under the Author's notice, induced him to turn his attention to the question, with the view, if possible, of detecting the cause of failure. In the course of his researches he collected a great amount of facts and particulars, and the serious and increasing magnitude of the evil became so striking that he resolved to embody them with some remarks and statements on ships of wood and iron, with the view of directing public attention to so momentous a subject, and pointing out a ready and practical means by which these evils can be removed. Book Electrolytic Corrosion of Iron in Soils Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electrolytic Corrosion of Iron in Soils Classic Reprint written by Burton McCollum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrolytic Corrosion of Iron in Soils The data herein presented represent a portion of the work done by the Bureau of Standards in connection with a more general investigation of the subject of electrolysis and electrolysis mitiga tion, which has been in progress for some time past. The present paper is designed to deal only with the fundamental laws govern ing electrolytic corrosion under practical conditions, and relates to self - corrosion only in so far as it is necessary to distinguish between the two classes. The subject of the prevention of elec trolytic damage is referred to only incidentally, when occasion requires, in order to interpret the significance of results obtained. This matter of electrolysis prevention has been given much atten tion and will be treated at some length in a report which will be issued shortly by the Bureau of Standards, dealing exclusively with the subject of electrolysis mitigation. In studying the phenomena of electrolytic corrosion in soils under practical conditions many variables are encountered which tend in greater or less degree to affect the results. Among these may be mentioned the current density at the surface of the metal, the moisture content of the soil, the presence of oxygen either in the gaseous state or dissolved in soil waters. The latter not only afiects the rate of corrosion but also affects the character of the end products of the reactions, and thus to some extent has a bearing on the question of diagnosing the cause of particular cases of corrosion. The temperature of the soil is also important, par ticularly because of its effect on the current flow. In the case of iron, the formation of oxids as a result of the initial corrosion may complicate matters because of their possible action in stimu lating galvanic action. Other factors, such as the mechanical and chemical properties of the soil, the depth of burial of the metal, the limitation of current flow due to polarization, the formation of high resistance films on the surface of the metal, and the pitting of the surface, due to a variety of causes, may likewise act to increase or decrease the rate at which damage may progress, and therefore require special investigation. Finally, since it is not practicable to carry on all experiments in the field under practical conditions, it is necessary to study the possible differences in results that may in some cases occur between experiments per formed in the laboratory and in the field. It is these factors that are dealt with in the following pages, and while the investigations have in most cases not yet been completed, we believe that the data thus far obtained will be of sufficient interest to justify a report of progress at this time.
