Book The 1972 Flood in New York s Southern Tier

Download or read book The 1972 Flood in New York s Southern Tier written by Kirk W. House and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1972, Hurricane Agnes hit the East Coast with a monstrous and devastating force, bringing a deluge across multiple states and slamming four counties in the Southern Tier: Steuben, Chemung, Tioga, and Broome. Dozens died and property damage ran into the millions as Corning, Elmira, Owego, Binghamton, and other communities suddenly found themselves under water. The flood destroyed the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, staggered the Penn Central, shut down Corning Glass Works for weeks, and devastated the Corning Museum of Glass--a major cultural resource. Lives and landscapes were forever changed when homes and businesses washed away in a matter of minutes. Henceforth, the region's history became permanently divided into the times before and the times after the 1972 flood. Through stunning images, The 1972 Flood in New York's Southern Tier chronicles the extraordinary destruction of twisted rail lines, devastated streets, exhausted recovery workers, rivers bursting their banks, cars on houses, and houses on cars, all while capturing the communities' rebuilding efforts and recovery of the glass museum treasures.

Book Playing Politics with Natural Disaster

Download or read book Playing Politics with Natural Disaster written by Timothy W. Kneeland and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hurricane Agnes struck the United States in June of 1972, just months before a pivotal election and at the dawn of the deindustrialization period across the Northeast. The response by local, state, and national officials had long-term consequences for all Americans. President Richard Nixon used the tragedy for political gain by delivering a generous relief package to the key states of New York and Pennsylvania in a bid to win over voters. After his landslide reelection in 1972, Nixon cut benefits for disaster victims and then passed legislation to push responsibility for disaster preparation and mitigation on to states and localities. The impact led to the rise of emergency management and inspired the development of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). With a particular focus on events in New York and Pennsylvania, Timothy W. Kneeland narrates how local, state, and federal authorities responded to the immediate crisis of Hurricane Agnes and managed the long-term recovery. The impact of Agnes was horrific, as the storm left 122 people dead, forced tens of thousands into homelessness, and caused billions of dollars in damage from Florida to New York. In its aftermath, local officials and leaders directed disaster relief funds to rebuild their shattered cities and reshaped future disaster policies. Playing Politics with Natural Disaster explains how the political decisions by local, state, and federal officials shaped state and national disaster policy and continues to influence emergency preparedness and response to this day.

Book Disaster Preparedness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Association of Research Libraries
  • Publisher : Association of Research Libr
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Disaster Preparedness written by Association of Research Libraries and published by Association of Research Libr. This book was released on 1993 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most librarians know the importance of disaster preparedness. Many disasters could have been prevented altogether or have had reduced impact if institutions had been better prepared. This resource guide suggests how disaster preparedness can be achieved at cultural institutions. Twenty-three basic resource articles are presented to introduce disaster preparedness. They deal with the safety of collections rather than the safety of staff, and related issues such as security and environmental control are not addressed. Of the materials that cover what to do once a disaster has occurred, most emphasize water damage because so many causes of disaster result in water damage. The resource guide is supplemented by a list of 23 selected readings. When a choice had to be made between a readily available source and one that was difficult to obtain, the hard-to-obtain one was included in the resource guide, and a reference to the other was provided in the bibliography. The basic processes for disaster preparedness include: (1) brainstorming potential disasters; (2) investigating responses to past disasters; (3) outlining a disaster plan; (4) determining remaining needs; and (5) developing recommendations.
