Download or read book Peter Greenaway s Postmodern Poststructuralist Cinema written by Paula Willoquet-Maricondi and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-07-17 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, British multi-media artist Peter Greenaway has shocked and intrigued audiences with his avant-garde approach to filmmaking and other artistic ventures. From early experimental films to provocative features, Greenaway has deployed strategies associated with structuralist cinema, only to challenge or critique the very limits of that cinema and of film in general. In this collection of essays, scholars from a variety of disciplines explore various postmodern and poststructuralist aspects of Greenaway's films, starting with his early shorts and delving into his feature-length works, including The Draughtman's Contract, The Belly of an Architect, A Zed and Two Noughts, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, The Baby of M%con, and The Pillow Book. Other artistic productions, including his paintings and installations are also discussed. These essays examine the filmmaker's position within British and avant-garde cinema and his interest in constructing and deconstructing representational systems. In the years since the first edition of this book, Greenaway has enjoyed continued success in creating hybridized media projects for the stage and screen, as evidenced by additional essays for this revised edition. A new chapter addresses how Dutch political events and Dutch art have been crucial in shaping Greenaway's aesthetic, focusing on The Draughtsman's Contract, the 1991 opera Writing to Vermeer, and Nightwatching, the audio-visual installation and 2007 film of the same name, which were inspired by Rembrandt's Night Watch. Also new to this collection is an essay that examines Greenaway's most ambitious endeavor to date, The Tulse Luper Suitcases, which exists as four feature films, multiple websites, an online game, several books and installations, and a number of theatrical events. Peter Greenaway's Postmodern/Poststructuralist Cinema, Revised Edition explores the cultural, historical, and philosophical implications of this hybrid artist whose paintings, drawings, exhibitions, installations, and operatic productions are an intrinsic part of his work in film. This collection of diverse essays, which includes two texts by Greenaway, two interviews with the director, and a revised filmography, will interest students, teachers, critics and lovers of both postmodern art and cinema.

Download or read book The Thief His Wife and the Canoe written by David Leigh and published by Hodder Paperbacks. This book was released on 2022-04-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be a primetime ITV Drama. The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe tells the astonishing behind-the-scenes drama of the incredible story of Canoe Man John Darwin and his wife Anne. John faked his death at sea in a red canoe rather than face the ignominy of the bankruptcy that was beating at his door. Former Fleet Street journalist Leigh tracked down Anne Darwin at the couple's new home in Panama where she and her 'dead' husband had planned to start a secret new life together. When their guilt was exposed Anne Darwin agreed to fly back to England with Leigh and turn herself in to Cleveland Police. The runaway train of deceit and guilt which unfolded during an eight-day trial ultimately led to the seemingly most ordinary of couples from the bucket-and-spade town of Seaton Carew, in the north east of England, being jailed for more than six years on a string of money laundering and deception charges. Most shocking of all was the fact that Anne had lied about her husband's 'death' to the couple's own two grown-up sons for five and a half years. The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe is the definitive account of an audacious story that at times beggars belief. An objective third person account of a story that has already gone down in English criminal folklore as one of the most outrageous fraud crimes of the century. For fans of classic true crime stories and ITV Dramas such as Quiz, Des, Manhunt and The Pembrokeshire Murders.
Download or read book Easternsports written by and published by ICA Philadelphia. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longtime friends and first-time collaborators Alex Da Corte (born 1980) and Jayson Musson (born 1977) created a major new commission for ICA Philadelphia in 2014. Nearly two and a half hours in length, this in-the-round video installation was scripted by Jayson Musson, directed by Alex Da Corte, and scored by composer Devonté Hynes. Easternsports is an amorality tale for the digital age. Both deadly serious and heartbreakingly flippant, it embraces Gap commercials and grand jury rulings, middle-class aspirations and global imperialism. And it transforms a decade-long conversation between Musson and Da Corte into a work awash in the neon glow of their American milieu.

"Goltzius & the Pelican Company is the story of the Dutch engraver Hendrik Goltzius persuading one of the petty German princelings of Europe to pay for an expensive printing press to make a limited deluxe edition of a boldly illustrated Old Testament. And like a good advertising executive hoping to clinch a deal Goltzius is prepared to sweeten his offer by getting his Pelican Printing Company from The Hague to fulsomely dramatise six erotic biblical tales that demonstrate the six sexual taboos - voyeurism, incest, adultery, pederasty, prostitution and necrophilia. They start with the very first copulation tutored by Saton on Adam and Eve, and continue with the story of Lot and his daughters, the adultery of David and Bathsheba, the seduction of the under-aged Joseph by Potiphar's Wife, the --

Book excerpt: In 2007, the internationally renowned filmmaker Peter Greenaway ("The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover; The Draughtsman's Contract") will release "Nightwatching," a feature-length study of the life and loves of the eighteenth-century Dutch painter, Rembrandt, via his controversial masterpiece, "The Night Watch," an ensemble painting which depicts the identification of a murderer. According to Greenaway, the painting is "Rembrandt's "J'accuse."" There is a conspiracy painted in Rembrandt's "The Night Watch." The sinister title of the painting alone suggests we should look for it . Is this a painting, or an act of theater, or a still from a film?" In this accompanying artist's book, Greenaway offers fans a glimpse into his own artistic process, with written analyses of each of the characters in the painting followed by a wealth of enlarged, close-up details in which brush marks practically jump from the page.
Download or read book Creating Interior Atmosphere written by Jean Whitehead and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to explore the creation of interior atmosphere as seen through the lens of mise-en-scène. You will learn how this film theory informs the concept of 'staged space' translated through the narrative and expressive qualities of a particular scene. Jean Whitehead quickly takes this concept beyond the screen and considers its application to the interior 'setting'. By learning to use the ingredients that inform an 'interior' mise-en-scène such as its backdrop, choice of props, use of special effects alongside the application of colour, pattern, graphics, light and shadow, an immersive atmospheric experience can be created. Packed with inspiring examples and case studies, ranging from cinematic interiors and art installations, to the work of notable interior designers, stylists and architects with an interior interest, this book broadens current thinking around the design of the decorated interior. It will help you to embrace the concepts that underpin an interior mise-en- scène through the use of softer decorative techniques and concerns.
Download or read book Perennial Decay written by Liz Constable and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Oscar Wilde was convicted of gross indecency in 1895, a reporter for the National Observer wrote that there was "not a man or a woman in the English-speaking world possessed of the treasure of a wholesome mind who is not under a deep debt of gratitude to the marquis of Queensberry for destroying the high Priest of the Decadents." But reports of the death of decadence were greatly exaggerated, and today, more than one hundred years after the famous trial and at the beginning of a new millennium, the phenomenon of decadence continues to be a significant cultural force. Indeed, "decadence" in the nineteenth century, and in our own period, has been a concept whose analysis yields a broad set of associations. In Perennial Decay, Emily Apter, Charles Bernheimer, Sylvia Molloy, Michael Riffaterre, Barbara Spackman, Marc Weiner, and others extend the critical field of decadence beyond the traditional themes of morbidity, the cult of artificiality, exoticism, and sexual nonconformism. They approach the question of decadence afresh, reevaluating the continuing importance of late nineteenth-century decadence for contemporary literary and cultural studies.
Download or read book Being Naked Playing Dead written by Alan Woods and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Greenaway has an international reputation as one of the most innovative, stylish and intelligent of contemporary film-makers. His eight feature films, from The Draughtsman's Contract to The Pillow Book, have variously, and sometimes simultaneously, prompted controversy, infamy, acclaim and delight. However, Greenaway is an artist whose work also includes painting; collage; experimental TV; the novel/opera Rosa; and numerous exhibitions/installations, including The Stairs, a continuing series of ten projects in ten cities exploring the basic components of cinema. Being Naked Playing Dead explores the complete oeuvre, but centres firmly on Greenaway's insistence that his is 'a cinema of ideas not plots'. Each film is discussed within a thematic analysis of the full range of Greenaway's output and the wider contexts within which it is conceived. In conclusion there are two extended interviews, making this book essential reading for all Greenaway enthusiasts.

She is an ordinary housewife and lives with her lovely dog and her husband, who is a bit of a difficult fellow, in a quiet cottage in British country side. She's a wonderful cook. She enjoys her garden. And, occasionally, she makes cakes for the village parties. No one has seen Lizzie's husband, Jacob, for a few days. That's because last Monday and Lizzie snapped and cracked him on the head with her garden shovel. No one quite misses Jacob though, and Lizzie surely didn't kill him on purpose. And now that she has the chance to live beyond his shadow, she won't neglect her good fortune. Over the course of the following month, with a body to get rid of and few fail-proof options at hand, Lizzie will channel her most practical instincts and do what she does best: she'll cook Jacob, and she'll eat him. But when Lizzie inadvertently befriends an isolated misfit, she will be tested: Will Lizzie turn to this new person for solace and abandon her desperate plan or will her new friend be an unwitting accessory to her crime? Dark, unexpectedly funny, and achingly human, Season to Taste is a deliciously subversive treat. In Lizzie Prain, Natalie Young has created one of the most remarkable and surprising heroines in fiction.
