Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries, the west central African kingdom of Kongo practiced Christianity and actively participated in the Atlantic world as an independent, cosmopolitan realm. Drawing on an expansive and largely unpublished set of objects, images, and documents, Cecile Fromont examines the advent of Kongo Christian visual culture and traces its development across four centuries marked by war, the Atlantic slave trade, and, finally, the rise of nineteenth-century European colonialism. By offering an extensive analysis of the religious, political, and artistic innovations through which the Kongo embraced Christianity, Fromont approaches the country's conversion as a dynamic process that unfolded across centuries. The African kingdom's elite independently and gradually intertwined old and new, local and foreign religious thought, political concepts, and visual forms to mold a novel and constantly evolving Kongo Christian worldview. Fromont sheds light on the cross-cultural exchanges between Africa, Europe, and Latin America that shaped the early modern world, and she outlines the religious, artistic, and social background of the countless men and women displaced by the slave trade from central Africa to all corners of the Atlantic world.

Book Myths of the Pagan North

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Abram
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2011-03-03
  • ISBN : 1441102000
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Myths of the Pagan North written by Christopher Abram and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Vikings began to migrate overseas as raiders or settlers in the late eighth century, there is evidence that this new way of life, centred on warfare, commerce and exploration, brought with it a warrior ethos that gradually became codified in the Viking myths, notably in the cult of Odin, the god of war, magic and poetry, and chief god in the Norse pantheon. The twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when most of Scandinavia had long since been converted to Christianity, form perhaps the most important era in the history of Norse mythology: only at this point were the myths of Thor, Freyr and Odin first recorded in written form. Using archaeological sources to take us further back in time than any written document, the accounts of foreign writers like the Roman historian Tacitus, and the most important repository of stories of the gods, old Norse poetry and the Edda, Christopher Abram leads the reader into the lost world of the Norse gods.

Book The Muslim Community in North America

Download or read book The Muslim Community in North America written by Earle H. Waugh and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 1983 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of fifteen studies addressed to the relatively recent phenomenon of Muslims residing in North America, their adaptation to an often alien way of life, as well as the problem the larger North American community faces in not only accepting but also benefiting from the existence of this new group. Most of the papers were presented at a symposium on Islam in North America, held at the University of Alberta from May 27 to 31, 1980. In this book the studies are grouped under six major headings: "Islam and the Modern World," "Muslims in North America: Dynamics of Growth," "Muslim Immigrant Communities: Identity and Adaptation," "Islam and the Educational Establishment," "Indigenous Muslims," and "Statements from within the Tradition." It is an excellent introduction to a subject of great interest, fraught with problems and needing further in-depth research.
