Download or read book Legendary Locals of Asheville written by Kevan D. Frazier and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all great cities, Asheville's story is one of people, not institutions or industries. For more than two centuries, deep in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, extraordinary women and men have created a truly unique American city. Legendary Locals of Asheville tells the stories of the people who founded, built, and rebuilt Asheville. From the first woman elected to state office in the South, who won her primary before women had the right to vote, to the grandson of a famed railroad magnate who built a 250-room chateau that became the largest home in America, to the entrepreneur who helped ignite the city's renaissance when he risked opening an art gallery downtown when most of it was still boarded up, Ashevillians are an amazing lot. Likewise, there are stories of extraordinary groups like the renowned faculty of an experimental college that redefined the American arts or the brave high school students who joined together to fight segregation. Their stories are as touching and fascinating as they are varied.

Download or read book A Seal to Watch Over Me written by Laura Matthews and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After finishing veterinary school, Delaney has moved back to her hometown in Montana to follow her passion: caring for animals and getting her veterinary license. She plans on having her own clinic one day. But things aren’t going her way. Someone seems to have it out for her, terrorizing her at every turn. Just how far is her tormentor willing to go? Does he want her dead, or just scared? Trying to protect herself, she can’t help but run into people from her past, including Colton Laughlin, her childhood crush turned sheriff. Colton is one of the four Laughlin Brothers whose family she knows quite well. In A SEAL to Watch over Me, Delaney tries to maintain her tough-girl persona while diving headfirst into her own past. Her past involved an abusive alcoholic father and a mother who was as abused as her. She also has a brother whom she never really got along with one way or another. She was too busy dodging her father’s wrath. Luckily for Delaney, she’d had Colton and his family to be her retreat when she had needed one. They never judged her, or the poverty and abuse she lived in. They were just there. That’s when, at a very naive age, Delaney had made a move on Colton at a high school dance in which he had turned her down flat in front of his friends. Delaney left town for college, not trusting any man, and veterinary school hadn’t changed that. Can she overcome her own issues with men to let her guard down when it comes to Colton, or will her well-constructed walls protect her from him and whoever is out to get her?

Download or read book The American Poet written by Samuel D. G. Heath, PhD and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-02-08 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded an American Legion Scholarship I am also an award winning author and have published numerous articles and books. Having attended several colleges and universities eventually earning my Ph. D. in Human Behavior I hold several life credentials in education earned during many years as an educator together with years spent working in the Aerospace Industry and other occupations. But to call Einsteins famous equation E=MC2 incomplete because it does not account for life and death does seem quite extraordinary, yet these remain the two greatest mysteries they have ever been denying us thus far a theory of everything. Something animates life and departs with death, but what this something is not all our science has yet discovered, though things like the Large Hadron Collider may provide needed insight, and it has been in the pursuit of knowledge about these two greatest mysteries that has compelled me into so many varied academic studies and careers attempting to make sense of the world and our place in it and how people think and deal with the issues of life and death philosophically, religiously, and politically. The things I have discovered along the way compelled me to much research and speculation about these mysteries and how they impact our lives, to communicate my thoughts about them to share with others in a daily journal and posted to my website and provided in book format each year. These writings are of importance in an increasingly dangerous world with a most uncertain future due to so much corruption, ineptitude and lack of accountability in our own government as well as that of others, the abject failure of our schools due to the very same things especially the same lack of accountability we find in government, the religious and political hatreds with protracted wars worldwide and little to give hope for world peace I believed my articles about these important enough to publish in book format. Some years ago I removed from the greater part of society to live in semi-seclusion alone with my books and thoughts in a quiet part of the Sequoia National Forest devoting myself to contemplation, speculating about many things and committing my thoughts in writing fulltime. As a writer and author given to much introspection and fascinated by human behavior, nature, and our universe it was important to me to simplify my life as much as possible as anyone given to philosophical speculation about many things must. That much of my writing covers some metaphysical thoughts about God, angels and demons, an afterlife and Biblical stories of origins, of prophecies of the End Times and so much more have been absorbing studies as well and I freely share my thoughts about these in this volume.

Download or read book Movies and the Modern Psyche written by Sharon Packer MD and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By looking at the interactions between cinema and psychology, Packer offers readers clear and basic insights into some of the most fundamental reasons why film is such an important influence upon our lives today. Movies and the Modern Psyche first describes the basic concepts of psychoanalysis, experimental psychology, behavioral conditioning, and hypnosis, which have all played major roles in the histories of both film and psychiatry. It then goes on to discuss the recent rise in film therapy, drug treatments, treatment for drug abuse, and the closing of asylums, to show how shifts in treatment techniques, theories, and settings are foreshadowed and fossilized by film. Psychology and cinema are kindred cousins, born at the same time and developing together, so that each influences the other. From the mind-controlling villains that occupy early horror films and Cold War thrillers (like Caligari, Mabuse, and The Ipcress File), to the asylums that house numberless political allegories and personal dramas (in Shock Corridor, Spellbound, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Girl Interrupted), to the drugs, phobias, and disorders that pervade so many of our favorite films (including, as a small sample, Vertigo, Night of the Hunter, Psycho, Rainman, Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, and Batman Begins), there is no escaping either psychology in the movies, or the movies in psychology. By looking at the interactions between cinema and psychology, this book offers readers clear and basic insights into some of the most fundamental reasons why film is such an important influence upon our lives today. Download or read book Tom Mix Died for Your Sins written by Darryl Ponicsan and published by Speaking Volumes. This book was released on with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TOM MIX DIED FOR YOUR SINS - A NOVEL BASED ON HIS LIFE Here is a brilliantly colorful evocation of the life and times of Tom Mix, as based on fact but told in fiction. The rodeo and ranching days, the movie stunts and the movie glamour, the private and public circuses, Mix's wives and girls, are all covered in a tale as authentic as it is engrossing. Kid Bandera tells the story—tells it with wit, cynicism, and affection. When he met Tom in 1904, Tom was 24 and knew nothing about being a cowboy. But he knew how to ride, he knew how to fight, how to tell stories, and how to ingratiate himself with every girl who came along. The Kid and Tom were lawmen together in Kansas, worked a combination ranch and wild west show in Oklahoma. And Tom Mix learned his craft—as he learned every craft he tried—and there were no stunts too hard for him. When Tom Mix went to Hollywood, he brought his incredible stunts to the silent films and brought incredible wealth—and world fame—to himself. Before his career ended, there were command performances in Europe. For neither before nor since was there a movie cowboy his equal. Tom Mix Died for Your Sins is the story of a larger than life cowboy in a larger than life era.
