The learned economists of capital still often try to maintain a deeply cogitative silence about the unprecedented tempo of Russiaʹs industrial development, or confine themselves to remarks about an extreme "exploitation of the peasantry". They are missing a wonderful opportunity to explain why the brutal exploitation of the peasants in China, for instance, or Japan, or India, never produced an industrial tempo remotely approaching that of the Soviet Union. Facts win out, however, in the end. The bookstalls of all civilized countries are now loaded with books about the Soviet Union. It is no wonder; such prodigies are rare. The literature dictated by blind reactionary hatred is fast dwindling. A noticeable proportion o the newest works on the Soviet Union adopt a favorable, if not even a rapturous, tone. As a sign of the improving international reputation of the parvenu state, this abundance of pro-soviet literature can only be welcomed. Moreover, it is incomparably better to idealize the Soviet Union than fascist Italy. Writing in 1842, Lydia Maria Child articulates a crisis in the relationship of democracy to sovereign power that continues to occupy political theory today. Is sovereignty, with its reliance on singular and exceptional power, fundamentally inimical to democracy? Or might a more fully realized democracy distribute, share, and popularize sovereignty, thus blunting its exceptional character and its basic violence? In Democracy's Spectacle, Jennifer Greiman looks to an earlier moment in the history of American democracy's vexed interpretation of sovereignty to argue that such questions about the popularization of sovereign power shaped debates about political belonging and public life in the antebellum United States. In an emergent democracy that was also an expansionist slave society, Greiman argues, the problems that sovereignty posed were less concerned with a singular and exceptional power lodged in the state than with a power over life and death that involved all Americans intimately. Drawing on Alexis de Tocqueville's analysis of the sovereignty of the people in Democracy in America, along with work by Gustave de Beaumont, Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville, Greiman tracks the crises of sovereign power as it migrates out of the state to become a constitutive feature of the public sphere. Greiman brings together literature and political theory, as well as materials on antebellum performance culture, antislavery activism, and penitentiary reform, to argue that the antebellum public sphere, transformed by its empowerment, emerges as a spectacle with investments in both punishment and entertainment.

Operating at the margins of political and historical fiction, the writers studied here excavate generic and temporal registers in the historical novel that enable them to imagine revolution in ways that eschew narratives of transition designed to describe the bourgeois-democratic nation-state to the exclusion of plantation societies. Despite being guided in recent years by critical paradigms focused on recovering neglected moments, spaces, and voices, literary historians have struggled to fit Reconstruction's revolutionary upheavals into their transformed narratives of the long nineteenth century. This book makes the case for the novel form as a vital source in reconstructing the historical consciousness of Reconstruction as a revolutionary experience. Arguing that the historical novel of Reconstruction gains formal coherence from the conscious attempt to theorize Reconstruction as revolution-and revolution as an anachronous experience-the book offers the first formal and historical account presenting novels about the Reconstruction period as constitutive of a coherent, if evanescent, aesthetic genre. By analyzing works by George Washington Cable, Albion Tourgée, Frances Harper, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Charles Chesnutt, among others, Wallbank-Hughes details how these authors experimented with narrative forms and subverted the epic conventions of the historical novel to reimagine the period's historiographical significance. By recovering a literary genre and intellectual tradition through their complex forms of time-consciousness, America's Imagined Revolution argues that these novels provide a window onto the literary culture of the South's long nineteenth century in which the region became a terrain for interpreting that most un-American of phenomena: revolution. Taking seriously literary attempts to decipher revolutionary change amid the postbellum South's retrenched regimes of race and class oppression, therefore, enables a reexamination of Reconstruction's pull on the contemporary imagination, encouraging us to think anew about the cultural afterlives of slavery in relation to the idea of revolution"--
