Book The Great British Rally

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham Robson
  • Publisher : Veloce Publishing
  • Release : 2021-02-16
  • ISBN : 9781787117365
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Great British Rally written by Graham Robson and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, The Great British Rally is the complete history of British international rally events, starting with the very first RAC rally of 1932, which included 1,000 miles of road motoring, when a mere three driving tests were needed to produce a result. By 1951 an international permit had been achieved, a speed element was included, and the 'Rally of the Tests' ran until 1960. From 1961, the event took on a number of high-speed, loose-surfaced Special Stages, the Scandinavian influence became clear, and the event took on a World Championship qualification in 1973. In that time, competing cars had progressed from having perhaps 50bhp to at least 300bhp, and even more high-tech machines with 500bhp and four-wheel-drive would follow. By then the RAC Rally was - and remains in its present form as Wales Rally GB - one of the three most important rallies in the world. Every 'works' team makes sure that it is represented, and it has a very important image throughout the world. Major sponsors embraced the event from the 1960s - first The Sun and Daily Mirror, then Lombard, and Network Q, and finally the Welsh government - which in recent years has become a very high-profile showcase for the world's most exciting cars. Few other British International events have such a long and distinguished record. The 75th running of this event takes place in 2019. With year-by-year accounts of all events in the Rally's history, copiously illustrated with period photographs, and covering the various challenges posed by such crises as foot and mouth disease, weather conditions and controversy over rules and regulations, this book is the definitive guide.

Book Ford Focus WRC

Download or read book Ford Focus WRC written by Graham Robson and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When world rallying introduced a new formula for “World Rally Cars”, Ford seized the opportunity. Malcolm Wilson’s M-Sport organization was contracted to do the job, completed the design in less than a year, and spent the next 12 years campaigning this turbocharged, four-wheel-drive car all round the world. Working from state-of-the-art facilities, M-Sport built 97 Focus WRCs, all of which proved to be worthy of World level action when they won 44 World Championship events. Stellar drivers like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Markko Märtin, Marcus Grönholm and Mikko Hirvonen all added to the mystique of an ultra-professional organization, along with substantial support and sponsorship from the likes of Martini, BP, and the state of Abu Dhabi. By building its in-house technical expertise, M-Sport not only engineered and developed the entire car on behalf of Ford, but gradually took over development of the 300bhp, 2.0-litre, turbocharged engine, and led the design of the complex four-wheel-drive transmissions provided by Xtrac. M-Sport’s reputation exploded to the point that when regulations changed, the company immediately produced a new-generation Fiesta WRC, and kept the winning days rolling.

Book Group A When Rallying Created Road Car Icons

Download or read book Group A When Rallying Created Road Car Icons written by Reinhard Klein and published by McKlein Distribution. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 1986 there were several fatal accidents to competitors and spectators involving Group B cars during events of the World Rally Championship. The governing body of motorsport, the FIA, decided that the regulations concerning which cars were eligible to enter the WRC had to be changed and they opted to go for Group A where 5,000 cars of a particular model had to be manufactured in order to qualify. The change was implemented within six months of the decision being taken and thus at the beginning of 1987 season, there were very few cars that both qualified and were also competitive. The rally stars from the previous era like Walter Röhrl, Hannu Mikkola, Juha Kakkunen and Markku Alén were still there with new stars like Carlos Sainz, Didier Auriol, Tommi Mäkinen and Colin McRae emerging. Rallying technology was forced to undergo an almost complete re-start and it took some time before more than just one or two manufacturers could produce a winner. When they did, the side-effect was astounding with thousands of four-wheel drive, turbocharged road cars coming onto the global market. The new McKlein book, Group A: When Rallying created Road Car Icons, covers the ten years from 1987 to 1996 when Group A went from featuring fairly unexciting road cars to exotic, hi-tech rally cars whose performance was not much less than their predecessors. As well as an overview of the major events, the leading cars and crews, the factory teams, the changes of regulations--both technical and sporting--as well as results of all the major events and the championships associated with them, the books are lavishly illustrated with photographs from the famous McKlein archive. In addition, there are many stories of incidents and occurrences that give the reader an insight into just what rallying was like during the period covered and how Lancia, Ford, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi fought for the WRC title.

Book excerpt: The only full history behind all of Ferrari's most outrageous performance cars. For over 60 years, Ferrari has produced cars that fire the imaginations of car lovers worldwide. Embodying the perfect combination of beauty, performance, exclusivity, and Italian flair, its vehicles have made it the world's most iconic carmaker. Though Ferrari has always produced road cars, the company has first and foremost focused on competition models, such as the handful of cars built in low-number serial production that campaigned on race courses the world over in the 1950s and 60s. In Ferrari Hypercars: The Story of Maranello's Fastest, Rarest Road Cars, author Winston Goodfellow profiles some of Ferrari's top creations--vehicles so startling in their performance capabilities that they surpass modern terms and attain the status of "hypercar." This book begins by reaching back to the 1950s to establish the lineage of hypercars and goes on to showcase the best known examples since the 288 GTO, including the F40, F50, Enzo, and all-new la Ferrari. These cars were collector vehicles from the moment they rolled off the production line, though that was never the reason for their creation; they were made to be driven. A necessary read for any racing fan, Ferrari Hypercars exhaustively traces the history of the company's competition vehicles and establishes its status as a symbol for speed, luxury, and wealth.
