Book The Competitiveness of State owned Commercial Banks in China

Download or read book The Competitiveness of State owned Commercial Banks in China written by J. Shang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has undertaken a series of comprehensive economic and banking reform programs over the past three decades. As part of the WTO agreement, the domestic financial sector is fully open to foreign investors from WTO member countries in 2006. To answer the challenges, the policy makers and management of SOCB have been introducing two major steps to improve the Competitiveness of the commercial banks: transfer the bad debts to asset management companies and inject foreign exchange reserves to capital. However, the qualitative study shows that the general performance of the state-owned commercial banks is unstable during this period. It is high time that the consequences and efficiency of the reform were examined on an objective basis. This research offers a careful and rigorous examination of the condition and determinants of banking efficiency and competitiveness in China, with the focus on the state-owned commercial banks. The key contribution of this study is to develop a comprehensive empirical framework to measure and explain the performance of the state-owned commercial banks during the crucial transitional period from 1998 to 2003. This research examines the banking market conditions on the basis of a synthesis of the traditional Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm and other alternative hypotheses. The thesis reveals that the state-owned commercial banks still dominate in both retail and business banking markets. The interest earnings remain the dominant source of commercial revenues. Due to the special relationship with government and their operational characters in the financial market, the state-owned commercial banks are not sensitive to monetary policy adjustments. The competition from other type of commercial banks has been strengthening, but the impact is rather limited. The main contribution of this study to the empirical literature on the Chinese banking market is the employment of the Data Envelopment Analysis to measure the efficiency of the state-owned commercial banks at provincial level, followed by a panel econometric investigation into the differences in banking efficiency across the stat-owned commercial banking groups as well as individual provinces. The results show that the level of banking efficiency was generally very low and there was a significant extent of input surplus among the provincial branches. The source of inefficiency is different among individual banking groups. The econometric study reveals that the SOCBs benefit from the concentrated market structure and strong complementary relationship with their traditional business areas. The empirical results have also shed light on further policy measures to enhance banking competition and performance in China.

Book Reforming China s State owned Enterprises and Banks

Download or read book Reforming China s State owned Enterprises and Banks written by Becky Chiu and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is informative and readable. It will be of interest to anyone wanting to learn about the development of the Chinese economy in general and the reforms of state-owned enterprises in particular. The data and in-depth discussion presented in the book will appeal to academics as well as policymakers. Yin-Fang Zhang, Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy China watchers will welcome a book which provides a detailed insight into the two pillars of that economy: the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the state-owned banks (SOBs). This is a scholarly work, rich in detail. Shelagh Heffernan, The Financial Regulator For China to sustain her transformation requires that she tackle reform of her state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and banks. This book comprehensively assesses the scale of the problem, reviews previous reforms and suggested solutions. Finally the authors propose their own reform agenda, sensitive to Chinese realities. Michael Artis, European University Institute, Italy This is an excellent study of the nexus between the effects of party control, the soft budget of state-owned enterprise (SOEs) and the financial fragility of the state-owned banking system (SOBs) in China. It is both sympathetic and knowledgeable about the problems of achieving reform and progress. Beautifully written, it should become the most influential work in this field in the English-speaking world. Charles A.E. Goodhart, London School of Economics, UK This book s starting point is that after two decades of experiments, during which other transition economies have effectively privatised all of their former state enterprises, China is still endeavouring to find a way to reinvent and re-engineer its own state-owned economic establishments. The authors explore these reforms along with the problems of China s state-owned banks, which have long been troubled by the adverse loans of Chinese enterprises and face foreign competition in 2007 under China s WTO commitments. Drawing on wide-ranging case studies of enterprise reform, Becky Chiu and Mervyn Lewis combine their extensive experience to give an authoritative account of China s enterprise and bank reform agenda, involving property rights, improved corporate governance and stimulating enterprise. This book will be of great interest to business economists, academic economists and those following the development of the Chinese economy.

Book The great leap forward The marketing of banking services in China

Download or read book The great leap forward The marketing of banking services in China written by Carla Vieira and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2005-04-08 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Generally speaking, economic growth is closely related to the efficiency of a country s financial markets. That is, the more varied the investment alternatives by which economic resources can flow within a country and between countries, the more efficient the financial market. This efficiency leads to a higher level of capital formation, and improved capital utilisation, thereby increasing the utility of both savers and borrowers and promoting economic growth. In line with its transition to a market economy China has, amongst other reforms, embarked on a reform of its financial system, transforming its one-bank monopoly into an integrated system of many banks and other specialised financial institutions. The resulting market complexity and the emergence of domestic and international competition gave rise to the marketing of financial services in China. Despite banks increasing marketing sophistication and higher spending on marketing, consumer behaviour is only beginning to react to it. On one hand the emergence of a wide variety of financial institutions and financial products has offset the impact of the social system reform on individuals lives. On the other hand, most Chinese still stay with one of the four wholly state-owned commercial banks, perhaps out of habit, perhaps from a feeling of security with their old banks. The effect on banks has been dramatic, service levels have improved greatly while product quality and variety have become better. However, the lack of market segmentation, partly due to government regulation, limits banks abilities to effectively target consumer groups, (which also hinders consumers information gathering and decision-making). Transformation of banking is hindered by China s poorly performing corporate sector, which strongly undermines banking profitability. China remains one of the weakest countries in terms of strength of the financial sector (Moody s), and the imminent WTO entry might result in disarray in the financial industry. Foreign banks with their sophisticated marketing have already put strong pressure on their Chinese counterparts, who are learning quickly. In the long run, the WTO entry and increased openness of the financial market will increase the competitiveness of the marketplace and enhance the development of the marketing of financial services in China. This dissertation will be divided into two parts. In the first part I will be talking about China s [...]

Book China s State Enterprises

Download or read book China s State Enterprises written by Ran Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the nature and significance of China’s state enterprises which have undergone substantial changes since China’s economic liberalization in 1978. It argues that much of the criticism is based on mistaken premises, where even the term ‘state-owned enterprises’ is a misnomer given that the emphasis is much less on ownership than on control. Using numerous case studies, this book highlights the extent to which these enterprises have evolved in response to reforms, and provides an in-depth analysis of their role in China’s outward investment strategy in the “Belt and Road” initiative. This role speaks to their growing influence as China expands her global footprint.

For a country is it very important to be in accordance with the international claims, in order to be competitive. Since the last decade, China has been opened politically and economically. Thus they attempted to clear the existing delay as fast as possible, to develop a connection to economic leaders such as the US or Europe and then itself to play a significant role in the international economy. A step toward this goal was the entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). The following paper will tackle this topic, including analyzing the impact of the WTO on the Chinese finance system. But first, I will go over some details about the WTO, its agreements and principles. After this, I will discuss the course of Chinese entry and the ensuing problems. In the second part of the paper, the Chinese finance system will be explained, and more precisely, the Chinese banking system. At this I will illustrate the history of the banking system, the role of foreign banks in China before entry into the WTO and then present the problems of the system. In the third part it will analyze the variances and ascendancies, also the pros and cons of inclusion in the WTO.

Book The Corporate Governance Reform of State owned Commercial Banks in China

Download or read book The Corporate Governance Reform of State owned Commercial Banks in China written by Zhenyun Chen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this doctoral thesis is to identify the inadequacies and weaknesses of the current corporate governance system and structure in Chinese state-owned commercial banks by performing a comprehensive analysis of both the internal and external governance mechanisms of banks, and by learning from the advanced experience of banking in developed economies as well as international economic and banking institutions. The research commences with a conceptual approach to banks, in terms of banking and the corporate governance. It then examines the fundamental theories related to the banking and the corporate governance. The research shows that China has undergone an array of profound economic and banking reform programmes over that past three decades. Since 1995, a new governance system has been established in China's state-owned commercial banks through institutional reforms, which have emphasized addressing the ownership, asset quality and governance issues of the banks. Subsequently, the research demonstrates that the reform efforts have made important changes in the ways that the government conducts its control and influence over the state-owned commercial banks, shifting a system from direct control and influence of business and management to control by indirect forms. The research attempts to explore the potential problems in China's banking laws, present the corporate governance reforms of Chinese state-owned commercial banks and create an appropriate framework of corporate governance for China's state-owned commercial banks from internal and external aspects.
