Book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planing on Multi Rooted Teeth In Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Treatment

Download or read book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planing on Multi Rooted Teeth In Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Treatment written by Jay M. Wylam and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic goal of periodontal therapy is the re-establishment of a healthy peridontium through the removal of supragingival and subgingival bacterial plaque, primary etiologic factors associated with peridontal diseases. Scaling and root planing are the two most common techniques used to remove bacterial plaque and calculus from diseased root surfaces. The purpose of this clinical investigation was to determine if visual access to the root surfaces of molar teeth would significantly enhance the ability to remove subgingival deposits of plaque and calculus on external root surfaces and in furcal areas. The results of this study showed an overall increased thoroughness of subgingival plaque and calculus removal for external root surfaces with an open flap approach versus a closed approach.

Book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planning in Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Debridement

Download or read book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planning in Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Debridement written by Lewis A. Humbert and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compared the effectiveness of subgingival bacterial plaque and calculus removal following periodontal scaling and root planing using an indirect (closed) versus direct (open) periodontal flap approach. Patients requiring extractions due to advanced periodontal disease were the source of the 60 single rooted teeth comprising the study group. The periodontal status of test and control teeth was evaluated initially by the Gingival Index (G.I.) of Loe and Silness, the Plaque Index (PII) of Silness and Loe and the Periodontal Index (PDI) of Ramfjord. The results favor the open flap procedure by a mean of 20.51% greater effectiveness. However, if one considers the root surfaces by various depths and surface areas, there is no statistically significant difference between the open and closed treatment when the periodontal pocket is greater than 3.0 mm deep. Although there was an 18% mean increase in effectiveness of plaque and calculus removal at depths greater than 3.0 mm by the open approach it did not prove to be statistically significant. This was due to the large variance within group values.

Download or read book Periodontal Disease written by Denis F. Kinane and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the etiopathology of periodontal disease has changed greatly over the last decade. The huge diversity of species within the microbial biofilm and the enormous multi-layered complexity of the innate, inflammatory and adaptive immune responses generated in response to it warrant study and discussion. Comprising reviews from renowned experts in the field, this book presents a comprehensible overview of this exciting and pertinent subject matter. It provides new insights into the structure and composition of subgingival biofilms and the nature of the extracellular matrix. Further, a summary of current understanding of subgingival microbial diversity and an overview of experimental models used to dissect the functional characteristics of subgingival communities are presented. Other articles discuss the innate cellular and neutrophil responses to the periodontal biofilm. The role of antimicrobial peptides in the host response to biofilm bacteria and modern approaches to nonsurgical biofilm management are also discussed. Finally, this volume addresses advances in antibiotic use and proposes a paradigm shift in the pharmacological approach to periodontal disease management.
