Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brisk and accessible guide to a thousand years of reiving and rivalry in the Highlands.” —The Scotsman The story of the Highland clans of Scotland is famous, the names celebrated, and the deeds heroic. Having clung to ancient traditions of family, loyalty, and valor for centuries, the clans met the beginning of their end at the fateful Battle of Culloden in 1746. Alistair Moffat traces the history of the clans from their Celtic origins to the coming of the Romans; from Somerled the Viking to Robert the Bruce; from the great battles of Bannockburn and Flodden to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Risings; and from the Clearances to the present day. Moffat is an adept guide to the world of the clans, a world dominated by lineage, land, and community. These are stories of great leaders and famous battles, and of an extraordinary people, shaped by the unique traditions and landscape of the Scottish Highlands. It’s a story too about the pain of leaving, with the great emigrations to the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand that began after Culloden. Complete with a clan map and an alphabetical list of the clans of the Scottish Highlands, this is a must for anyone interested in the history of Scotland.

Book Changing Concepts of Contract

Download or read book Changing Concepts of Contract written by David Campbell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing Concepts of Contract is a prestigious collection of essays that re-examines the remarkable contributions of Ian Macneil to the study of contract law and contracting behaviour. Ian Macneil, who taught at Cornell University, the University of Virginia and, latterly, at Northwestern University, was the principal architect of relational contract theory, an approach that sought to direct attention to the context in which contracts are made. In this collection, nine leading UK contract law scholars re-consider Macneil's work and examine his theories in light of new social and technological circumstances. In doing so, they reveal relational contract theory to be a pertinent and insightful framework for the study and practice of the subject, one that presents a powerful challenge to the limits of orthodox contract law scholarship. In tandem with his academic life, Ian Macneil was also the 46th Chief of the Clan Macneil. Included in this volume is a Preface by his son Rory Macneil, the 47th Chief, who reflects on the influences on his father's thinking of those experiences outside academia. The collection also includes a Foreword by Stewart Macaulay, Malcolm Pitman Sharp Hilldale Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an Introduction by Jay M Feinman, Distinguished Professor of Law at Rutgers School of Law.

Book All Call Iona Home 1800 1950

Download or read book All Call Iona Home 1800 1950 written by S MacNeil and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable genealogical work is now back in print. The first two MacNeils who came to Cape Breton followed their deceased father's instructions for finding the best site on which to start their settlement. Donald "Og" MacNeil, from Barra, Scotland, took part in the siege of Fortress Louisburg in 1758 and was much impressed by the beauty of Bras d'Or Lake. He met an early death in Quebec in 1759, but his sons fulfilled their father's wishes, emigrating more than fifty years later to Pictou and thence finding their way to what is now called Iona, Cape Breton. Author S.R. MacNeil, Donald "Og" MacNeil's great grandson, was curator of the Highland Village museum at Iona and answered many requests for family histories from visitors. In response he compiled this very thorough collection of genealogical data on the families who first settled in Iona. The book begins with MacNeils, and continues with many familiar surnames including Campbell, MacKinnon, MacKenzie, MacLean, and MacDonald. Since it was first published in 1979, this genealogical study has been useful to many thousands of descendants who have traced their roots to Cape Breton immigration in the early nineteenth century.

This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After several years of careful research, I arrived at the uncomfortable conclusion that Robert Lister MacNeil intentionally stole the heritage of the Brevig MacNeill family. He decided from the beginning to erase the significance of this family from clan history. In his book The Clan MacNeil, he ignored facts that did not suit his desired ends and went so far as to distort the truth. This book attempts to chronicle his efforts to do so and to discuss the consequences of his actions, both positive and negative.
