Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These letters from a yeoman farmer in the Confederate Army to his wife in Coosa County, Alabama, will be of interest to historians not only for the light shed upon the life of the Confederate soldier, but also for frequent allusions to rural life and the operation of the farm in Cotton's absence. He enlisted at Pinckneyville, Alabama, on April 1, 1862, and was paroled at Talladega on May 25, 1865. During the intervening years he saw action in Tennessee and Kentucky, in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, briefly again in Tennessee, then in Georgia against the forces of Sherman, moving finally into South Carolina.... These letters constitute an authentic record of a typical Confederate soldier's experience," ---Journal of Southern History

Book Confederate Diaries and Letters

Download or read book Confederate Diaries and Letters written by Pamela Stanfield and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains three diaries as well as various Civil War letters and documents. The first diary was written by Robert H. Wardlaw in 1820 when he was 13 years old and a young scholar and continues until age 18 when he learns of the death of his mother while he was away at school. Robert Wardlaw's ten sons all served the Confederacy and one of those sons, William C. Wardlaw is the author of the other two diaries. William Wardlaw was a captain in Company K of the 2nd SC Rifles, Jenkins Brigade. In addition to daily entries, he logs his locations when letters were sent or received. He writes almost daily of Molly, until he marries Josie. He reports Lincoln's death and the "humiliating ordeal of stacking our arms in the presence of the enemy" at Appomattox Court House. The diaries and letters were transcribed as written, as close to the originals as possible. Some photos are included which provide a realistic view of these fragile pieces of history.

Book Our Trust is in the God of Battles

Download or read book Our Trust is in the God of Battles written by Robert Franklin Bunting and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unlike most Civil War soldiers, Bunting wrote with the explicit purpose of publishing his correspondence, seeking to influence congregations of civilians on the home front just as he had done when he lectured them from the pulpit before the Civil War. Bunting's letters cover military actions in great detail, yet they were also like sermons, filled with inspiring rhetoric that turned fallen soldiers into Christian martyrs, Yankees into godless abolitionist hordes, and Southern women into innocent defenders of home and hearth. As such, the public nature of Bunting's writings gives the reader an exceptional opportunity to see how Confederates constructed the ideal of a Southern soldier.".

Book Longstreet s Aide The Civil War Letters of Major Thomas J Goree

This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Confederacy's most loyal adherents and articulate advocates was Lieutenant Grant James Longstreet's aide-de-camp, Thomas Jewett Goree. Present at Longstreet's headquarters and party to the counsels of Robert E. Lee and his lieutenants, Goree wrote incisively on matters of strategy and politics and drew revealing portraits of Longstreet, Jefferson Davis, P.G.T. Beauregard, John Bell Hood, J.E.B. Stuart, and others of Lee's inner circle. His letters are some of the richest and most perceptive from the Civil War period. Thomas Cutrer has collected all of Goree's wartime correspondence to his family, as well as his travel diary from June-August 1865. With its wide scope and rich detail, Longstreet's Aide represents an invaluable addition to the Civil War letter collections published in recent years. While Goree's letters will fascinate Civil War buffs, they also provide a unique opportunity for scholars of social and military history to witness from inside the workings of both an extended Southern family and the forces of the Confederacy.
