Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronology of the Bible Very few words are needed to show the importance of Chronology. The moral teachings of History may gain our warmer admiration, but Chronology is the skeleton or framework which supports the several parts of History, and saves the whole from falling into a confused heap. The Hebrew Chronology, in particular, has many claims on our notice; first, for its help towards our understanding the Bible; and, secondly, for its contribution towards the Chronology of the neighbouring nations, particularly of Egypt and Assyria. The Chronology of the ancient world is indebted first to Babylon for its recorded eclipses, preserved for us by Claudius Ptolemy the Astronomer, and then to those countries that were ruled by a succession of monarchs, whose reigns measured time with a convenience unknown to their republican neighbours. Book The Chronology of the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chronology of the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by David Ross Fotheringham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronology of the Old Testament HE following dissertation has been written in such moments as could be spared from the performance of pressing parochial duties. It is hoped however that it will shew no sign either of undue haste or of lack of preparation. Indeed, since chronology has been the author's study or his recreation from his childhood, it may be said that many years have each contributed their toll to the production of the little volume. In one respect the chronology that is advocated here may be regarded as a reversion to schemes and systems of an earlier date. This is true in that it is essentially a Biblical Chronology, and has been deduced almost entirely from the Hebrew records. Synchronism with Assyrian and other history serves to test and to establish the truth of results that have been already attained, but it is too slight to provide a solid foundation for an alternative system, and the attempt to make it such has led to disaster. The hope is expressed that the present enquiry may tend to a clearer view of historical sequence and may to some extent replace the elaborate chronological systems of past centuries that have failed to satisfy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Bible With this account of the building of the temple, imperfect as it is, we should at once close the present chap ter, were we not anxious to meet certain difficulties which we are aware, from personal experience, must afl'ect the mind of the reader while perusing some of the foregoing details. The sacrifice of Saul's descendants, for example, to gratify the vindictive feelin s of the Gibeonites, as well as the arting admonitions of avid to Solomon, respecting J cab, himei, and others, have been felt by many reflecting persons to militate, in appearance at least, against the con sistency of the sacred chronicles while the nature of Da vid's sin in numbering the people, with the terrible conse quences that followed, are matters well calculated to perplex even the most sober-minded. We frankly acknowledge, that after consulting a host of commentators, we have not been able entirely to elucidate the mystery which attaches to some of these transactions; but of the fruits of our re searches, the following may be taken as a compend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronology of the Bible: Connected With Contemporaneous Events in the History of Babylonians, Assyrians, and Egyptians Other points suggested in the course of the work will excite much interest and discussion. Entirely new theories are put forward in regard to the age of Ezra and the Feast of Purim, and to the possible presence of St. Peter in Rome in the ninth year after the Crucifixion. But the conclusions most calculated to provoke attention and controversy are those connected with the life of Christ. Reasons are given for accepting the statement of Irenaeus and regarding Jesus as in his forty-ninth year when he died. His birth is placed fourteen years be fore the Christian Era, and the wisdom which astonished the doctors at Jerusalem in a boy of twelve years of age is traced back to the schools of Alexandria. Book Old Testament History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Testament History Classic Reprint written by Ismar J. Peritz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History The present treatment of Old Testament history aims to conform to the object of the series as handbooks to Bible study. The Bible itself is, accordingly, the main primary source. In each Section the biblical text, as indicated in the margin, is the basis Of the discussion, and requires the first attention of the student. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the History and Recent Collation: Of the English Version of the Bible In respect to the accessories of the text, comprehending the contents of the chapters, the running heads of the columns, the marginal readings and references, and the chronology, the Bibles of the present day are much less conformed to the original edition. The translators, as we have seen, were to append no marginal notes at all, but only for the explanation of the Hebrew or Greek words; and also fit references Of one Scripture to another. To this requirement the early editions were entirely conformed; and the marginal references were very few. In the lapse of time, however, extensive changes and additions have been made in most of the above particulars. The contents of the chapters only have been preserved in the editions of larger size, without very great variation while in copies of a smaller form, these likewise have been frequently and variously altered and abbreviated.
