Book Studies in Earlier Old English Prose

Download or read book Studies in Earlier Old English Prose written by Paul E. Szarmach and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old English prose before the late tenth century is examined in this collection of hitherto unpublished essays. Using a variety of techniques, the authors explore well-known and lesser-known texts in search of a better understanding of why, how, and by whom the manuscripts were produced. Part I of the collection contains six studies of Alfredian prose--the Soliloquies, the Pastoral Care, and Consolation of Philosophy--all of which are translations traditionally associated with King Alfred. Part II contains nine essays on various prose works outside of the Alfredian milieu, including the Old English Dialogues, the Old English Bede, the Chronicle and Laws, and various religious works. The authors emphasize the importance of a fresh look at Latin backgrounds and sources and the need to return to manuscript evidence for new insights. As a group, they argue for sympathetic contextual analysis, urging scholars in the field to reexamine the prose of the earlier Old English period to find cultural and literary value and significance. A bibliographical appendix supplements the Greenfield-Robinson bibliography for the period ending in 1982. The contributions in this volume complement the eleven essays found in The Old English Homily and Its Background, edited by Paul E. Szarmach and Bernard F. Huppe, also published by SUNY Press.

Book Historic Figures of the Arthurian Era

Download or read book Historic Figures of the Arthurian Era written by Frank D. Reno and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separating fiction from history in a matter that has long vexed historians, the author demonstrates in an earlier McFarland book that the true King Arthur was a Celtic king of post-Roman Britain who lived in the late fifth and early sixth centuries. In an effort to further authenticate the Celtic Arthur as the legendary king, the author examines here the roles of six major figures of the period A.D. 383-518: Vortimer, Vitalinus, Cunedda, Cerdic, Octha, and Mordred. Through an extensive analysis of Arthur's 12 battles listed in the Historia Brittonum, this work explores both the influences of the High King's allies, and the shifting allegiance of those Britons who joined with Arthur's enemies. A battle list provides possible geographic locations for each of the battles, including a new site for Arthur's fateful battle at Camlann.

Book Anglo Saxon Manuscripts and their Heritage

Download or read book Anglo Saxon Manuscripts and their Heritage written by Phillip Pulsiano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume brings together some of the best recent work on the period before and after the Norman Conquest and makes an irresistible case for a number of fundamental revisions in our understanding of the culture of Anglo-Saxon and Norman England. Combining the use of novel techniques such as digital image processing with the best current practice in textual and iconographic study, this volume broadens the scope and applicability of manuscript studies, showing, for example, the falsity of prevailing notions of the vitality and status of the native English tongue after the Conquest. The essays combine to make a coherent and persuasive demonstration of the benefits of not remaining bound to the physical artifact but rather connecting codicology with practical and theoretical applications within manuscript studies and other historical disciplines.

Book The Historic King Arthur

Download or read book The Historic King Arthur written by Frank D. Reno and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was King Arthur? How did the story originate? Through careful research of the many primary documents, a picture of the true Arthur can in fact be set down. He reached power shortly after the Romans evacuated Britain at the end of the fifth century and died at the Battle of Camlann. He became king at 15 under the name of Ambrosius Aurelianus and fought against the Saxons on the mainland as Riothamus, thus explaining the regeneration motif so closely tied to the mythical Arthur. This study reveals that the integrity and ideals central to Arthurian myth were very much a part of the real Arthur.

Book Early Medieval Winchester

Download or read book Early Medieval Winchester written by Ryan Lavelle and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winchester’s identity as a royal centre became well established between the ninth and twelfth centuries, closely tied to the significance of the religious communities who lived within and without the city walls. The reach of power of Winchester was felt throughout England and into the Continent through the relationships of the bishops, the power fluctuations of the Norman period, the pursuit of arts and history writing, the reach of the city’s saints, and more. The essays contained in this volume present early medieval Winchester not as a city alone, but a city emmeshed in wider political, social, and cultural movements and, in many cases, providing examples of authority and power that are representative of early medieval England as a whole.
