Book A History of Christianity in India

Download or read book A History of Christianity in India written by Stephen Neill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-02-09 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians form the third largest religious community in India. How has this come about? There are many studies of separate groups: but there has so far been no major history of the three large groups - Roman Catholic, Protestant and Thomas Christians (Syrians). This work attempts to meet the need for such a history. It goes right back to the beginning and traces the story through the ups and downs of at least fifteen centuries. It includes careful studies of the political and social background and of the non-Christian reactions to the Christian message. The narration is non-technical and should present few difficulties to the thoughtful reader; the more technical matters are dealt with in notes and appendices. This book will be of interest to all students of Church History and will also prove fascinating to many who are concerned with the development of Christianity as a world religion and in the dialogue between different forms of faith.

To attempt to write in a few brief. Chapters a sketch of a. Region which practically constitutes a world in itself, and todo this from a missionary view-point and in a form suitable for young readers, must inevitably prove to be a most perplexing task. Book Hindu Catholic Encounters in Goa

Download or read book Hindu Catholic Encounters in Goa written by Alexander Henn and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Goa on India's southwest coast was once the capital of the Portuguese-Catholic empire in Asia. When Vasco Da Gama arrived in India in 1498, he mistook Hindus for Christians, but Jesuit missionaries soon declared war on the alleged idolatry of the Hindus. Today, Hindus and Catholics assert their own religious identities, but Hindu village gods and Catholic patron saints attract worship from members of both religious communities. Through fresh readings of early Portuguese sources and long-term ethnographic fieldwork, this study traces the history of Hindu-Catholic syncretism in Goa and reveals the complex role of religion at the intersection of colonialism and modernity.

Book Medieval Iberia

  • Author : Olivia Remie Constable
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 0812221680
  • Pages : 640 pages

Download or read book Medieval Iberia written by Olivia Remie Constable and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some historians, medieval Iberian society was one marked by peaceful coexistence and cross-cultural fertilization; others have sketched a harsher picture of Muslims and Christians engaged in an ongoing contest for political, religious, and economic advantage culminating in the fall of Muslim Granada and the expulsion of the Jews in the late fifteenth century. The reality that emerges in Medieval Iberia is more nuanced than either of these scenarios can comprehend. Now in an expanded, second edition, this monumental collection offers unparalleled access to the multicultural complexity of the lands that would become modern Portugal and Spain. The documents collected in Medieval Iberia date mostly from the eighth through the fifteenth centuries and have been translated from Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, Castilian, Catalan, and Portuguese by many of the most eminent scholars in the field of Iberian studies. Nearly one quarter of this edition is new, including visual materials and increased coverage of Jewish and Muslim affairs, as well as more sources pertaining to women, social and economic history, and domestic life. This primary source material ranges widely across historical chronicles, poetry, and legal and religious sources, and each is accompanied by a brief introduction placing the text in its historical and cultural setting. Arranged chronologically, the documents are also keyed so as to be accessible to readers interested in specific topics such as urban life, the politics of the royal courts, interfaith relations, or women, marriage, and the family.

Book Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Asia and the Americas

Download or read book Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Asia and the Americas written by Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a result of an international symposium on the encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Asia and the Americas, which was organized by Boston College’s Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College in June 2017. In Asia, Protestants encountered a mixed Jesuit legacy: in South Asia, they benefited from pioneering Jesuit ethnographers while contesting their conversions; in Japan, all Christian missionaries who returned after 1853 faced the equation of Japanese nationalism with anti-Jesuit persecution; and in China, Protestants scrambled to catch up to the cultural legacy bequeathed by the earlier Jesuit mission. In the Americas, Protestants presented Jesuits as enemies of liberal modernity, supporters of medieval absolutism yet master manipulators of modern self-fashioning and the printing press. The evidence suggests a far more complicated relationship of both Protestants and Jesuits as co-creators of the bright and dark sides of modernity, including the public sphere, public education, plantation slavery, and colonialism.

Book Masks of Conquest

Download or read book Masks of Conquest written by Gauri Viswanathan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic work in postcolonial studies, Masks of Conquest describes the introduction of English studies in India under British rule and illuminates the discipline's transcontinental movements and derivations, showing that the origins of English studies are as diverse and diffuse as its future shape. In her new preface, Gauri Viswanathan argues forcefully that the curricular study of English can no longer be understood innocently of or inattentively to the imperial contexts in which the discipline first articulated its mission.
