Book The Christian and His Machine Gun

Download or read book The Christian and His Machine Gun written by Michael C Griggs and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our day, there are basically two views concerning gun ownership by civilians: the "liberal" view and the "conservative" view. Concerning the military, again we find a liberal and a conservative view point. Could it be that neither view is correct? Is there a third option? There is, and that view is found in the Bible. This booklet takes you through some of the main passages in Scripture that deal with war, guns, and the military. Some of the topics dealt with in this booklet include: How should a nation's military be structured and how big should it be? When should nations go to war? Are there rules that must be followed in war? Does the Bible support gun ownership by Christians? Should civilians own machine guns? Also included is an appendix which shows that the views of our nation's founders were fairly close to the biblical model, much more so than most modern liberals or conservatives.

Download or read book People to Be Loved written by Preston Sprinkle and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians who are confused by the homosexuality debate raging in the US are looking for resources that are based solidly on a deep study of what Scripture says about the issue. In People to Be Loved, Preston Sprinkle challenges those on all sides of the debate to consider what the Bible says and how we should approach the topic of homosexuality in light of it. In a manner that appeals to a scholarly and lay-audience alike, Preston takes on difficult questions such as how should the church treat people struggling with same-sex attraction? Is same-sex attraction a product of biological or societal factors or both? How should the church think about larger cultural issues, such as gay marriage, gay pride, and whether intolerance over LGBT amounts to racism? How (or if) Christians should do business with LGBT persons and supportive companies? Simply saying that the Bible condemns homosexuality is not accurate, nor is it enough to end the debate. Those holding a traditional view still struggle to reconcile the Bible’s prohibition of same-sex attraction with the message of radical, unconditional grace. This book meets that need.

Book With a Machine Gun to Cambrai

Download or read book With a Machine Gun to Cambrai written by George Coppard and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 1999 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1914, after lying about his age, the 16-year-old George Coppard enlisted in Kitchener's army. Serving with the Machine Gun Corps, he fought in the battles of Loos, Somme and Arras, and at Cambrai, where he was badly wounded and won the Military Medal for Bravery. This book is based on diaries that the author kept, against military regulation, during his service in France. It is one of the few accounts of the war to be written by a private soldier rather than an officer, and as such it paints a vivid and horrifying picture of life in the trenches as seen by someone at the very bottom of the military hierarchy.

Book Collected Fiction

  • Publisher : Open Road Media

  • ISBN : 1504047206
  • Pages : 2522 pages

Download or read book Collected Fiction written by Irwin Shaw and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 2522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three acclaimed novels plus collected short fiction by the New York Times–bestselling author of Rich Man, Poor Man. The Young Lions: Irwin Shaw’s New York Times–bestselling debut is widely considered one of the four great World War II novels, along with From Here to Eternity, The Naked and the Dead, and The Caine Mutiny. Ambitious in its scope and robust in its prose, this “masterpiece” is also deeply humanistic, presenting the reality of war as seen through the eyes of three ordinary soldiers: a Nazi sergeant, a Jewish American infantryman, and an idealistic urbanite from New York City (TheBoston Globe). Bread Upon the Waters: No good deed goes unpunished? The Strands are a happy family, though not without their financial struggles. When their daughter helps a mugging victim by bringing him home, he turns out to be a Wall Street lawyer whose gratitude is as boundless as his bank account. But with each successive “reward,” the Strand family moves farther away from the wealth of happiness they already possessed. Short Stories: Five Decades: Shaw’s prolific output of short stories appeared regularly in the pages of the New Yorker and Esquire for over half a century. These sixty-three stories include such iconic works as “The Eighty-Yard Run” and “The Girls in Their Summer Dresses.” The Troubled Air: Five employees of Clement Archer’s popular radio show are accused Communists. He will have to fire them to keep his show on the air. But it’s not a simple choice—whatever Archer decides, he won’t be able to keep his hands clean, in Shaw’s provocative classic about courage and morality at the height of McCarthyism.

Book The Gun

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. J. Chivers
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2010-10-12
  • ISBN : 1439196532
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book The Gun written by C. J. Chivers and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a tour de force, prize-winning New York Times reporter C.J. Chivers traces the invention of the assault rifle, following the miniaturization of rapid-fire arms from the American Civil War, through WWI, Vietnam, to present day Afghanistan when Kalashnikovs and their knock-offs number as many as 100 million, one for every seventy persons on earth. At a secret arms-design contest in Stalin’s Soviet Union, army technicians submitted a stubby rifle with a curved magazine. Dubbed the AK-47, it was selected as the Eastern Bloc’s standard arm. Scoffed at in the Pentagon as crude and unimpressive, it was in fact a breakthrough—a compact automatic that could be mastered by almost anyone, last decades in the field, and would rarely jam. Manufactured by tens of millions in planned economies, it became first an instrument of repression and then the most lethal weapon of the Cold War. Soon it was in the hands of terrorists. In a searing examination of modern conflict and official folly, C. J. Chivers mixes meticulous historical research, investigative reporting, and battlefield reportage to illuminate the origins of the world’s most abundant firearm and the consequences of its spread. The result, a tour de force of history and storytelling, sweeps through the miniaturization and distribution of automatic firepower, and puts an iconic object in fuller context than ever before. The Gun dismantles myths as it moves from the naïve optimism of the Industrial Revolution through the treacherous milieu of the Soviet Union to the inside records of the Taliban. Chivers tells of the 19th-century inventor in Indianapolis who designs a Civil War killing machine, insisting that more-efficient slaughter will save lives. A German attaché who observes British machine guns killing Islamic warriors along the Nile advises his government to amass the weapons that would later flatten British ranks in World War I. In communist Hungary, a locksmith acquires an AK-47 to help wrest his country from the Kremlin’s yoke, beginning a journey to the gallows. The Pentagon suppresses the results of firing tests on severed human heads that might have prevented faulty rifles from being rushed to G.I.s in Vietnam. In Africa, a millennial madman arms abducted children and turns them on their neighbors, setting his country ablaze. Neither pro-gun nor anti-gun, The Gun builds to a terrifying sequence, in which a young man who confronts a trio of assassins is shattered by 23 bullets at close range. The man survives to ask questions that Chivers examines with rigor and flair. Throughout, The Gun animates unforgettable characters—inventors, salesmen, heroes, megalomaniacs, racists, dictators, gunrunners, terrorists, child soldiers, government careerists, and fools. Drawing from years of research, interviews, and from declassified records revealed for the first time, he presents a richly human account of an evolution in the very experience of war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There could hardly be a more topical book than this for the committed Christian. War and the Gospel does not pose a new problem. The problem is as old as the Christian faith, but it has assumed a greater urgency in our own time. Can a Christian conscientiously take part in modern war, a war that would undoubtedly result in the annihilation of tens of thousands of innocent persons? There have been numerous books and propaganda pamphlets issued on this subject, most of them utopian or idealistic rather than Biblical in viewpoint. It is the Biblical realism of this book that makes it such a deep and prophetic contribution to the subject. "Christian theology should start from the Scriptures, not from preconceived ideas", writes the author, and he adheres firmly to that standpoint throughout. The clarity of the author's exposition, the pertinence of his analysis, the vigour of his convictions and the firmness of his testimony make War and the Gospel a very important contribution to the most urgent question of our time.

Book History Of The Third Infantry Division In World War II

Download or read book History Of The Third Infantry Division In World War II written by Lt. Donald G. Taggart and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few units in the U.S. Army can boast as proud a unit history as the Third Infantry Division; it fought on all of the Europe and North African fronts that American soldiers were engaged against the Axis forces during World War II. The 3rd Infantry Division saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria for 531 consecutive days. In this official division history written by the officers who served with the unit at the time serves as a fascinating memorial and a detailed history of the “Marne Division” during World War II. The 3rd Inf. Division made landfall in Fedala on the 8th November 1942 as part of Operation Torch during the Allied invasion of North Africa and was engaged in heavy fighting before the German and Italian troops were finally levered out of the continent. The division was back in the thick of the fighting in Sicily under the command of such famous leaders as Generals Lucien Truscott, Omar Bradley and George S. Patton. As part of General Mark Clark’s U.S. Fifth army it engaged in some of the bloodiest engagements of the Italian campaign at Salerno beaches, Volturno river, Monte Cassino and Anzio. Under their old division commander General Truscott they formed part of the force that landed in Southern France and battled into the heart of Germany before the eventual capitulation of the Nazi High command in 1945. Richly illustrated with maps and pictures throughout.
