Book excerpt: In this superbly illustrated book Xiaofei Chen presents the first analysis in English of a ubiquitous East Asian urban phenomenon: the supergrid and superblock urban structure. The book opens with an introductory essay by Barrie Shelton in which he sets the scene for what is to follow, emphasizing how alien this structure was to Western urban design culture where radial patterns of development were the norm. Then, in her first chapter, Chen explains the make-up of the supergrid and superblock urban structure and its contrasting Chinese and Japanese forms. In the following three chapters she digs deep into the history, cultural origins, and underlying design philosophy of the supergrid and superblock to show how, under different cultural influences, the model has developed into two distinct forms. Two further chapters (5 and 6) provide detailed analysis of two sample superblocks in China (in Xi’an and Nanjing) and two in Japan (in Kyoto and Osaka) to reveal the relative advantages and disadvantages of how the structure is manifest in the two countries. In her conclusion she discusses her findings to show how and why the supergrid and superblock structure is a valuable urban design model which, with regional adjustments, can be used effectively in cities other than those of East Asia.

Book excerpt: The Global Studio: Shanghai + Louisville, explores the lilongs of Shanghai as a series of interior urban conditions that address themes of timelessness and currency. The studio's explorations examined historical contexts, developed representation techniques, and utilized material fabrication as outputs. By understanding the hidden private layers and filters of the lived condition, the studio was able to understand and interpret the trans-scalar and transnational spatial complexities operating within Shanghai lilongs and Louisville's Portland Neighborhood to identify sites for design intervention. The studio conducted critical analysis and spatial explorations, both on campus and in Shanghai, that reflect the experiential learning acquired in China. Throughout the semester, the design students formulated a pattern language that emerged from the study of the infrastructural and structural (economic, social, and environmental) flows typically found in Shanghai's urban condition. The studio established an interdisciplinary learning community of students collaborating with world-renowned multi-disciplinary design practices, including Studio Gang (Chicago), Arup Structural Engineers (London), Tongji University, the University of Hong Kong, and local architecture practices. Funded by over $30,000 of grants independently procured by two faculty members, the studio provided undergraduate students opportunities for an immersive educational experience and pathways for disseminating the studio work beyond the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As a design outreach strategy, the studio offered an open-to-the-public lecture series in the United States featuring architects, designers, preservationists, planners, developers, and scholars.

The other is the realm of the World Wide Web. Today drawing is a mediated discipline. Its value is not constituted by how "pure" it is, how it depicts, or how it expresses. Rather, its value is gauged in terms of critical practice: how drawing establishes and maintains a circulation between ideation and materialization, between things intelligible and things sensible. Although drawing appears as a static thing recorded on a medium, circulation is important in its conception. This is indeed the very thing that defines it. Every great drawing must circulate between the physical activity (whether by pencil, or by keyboard) and its criticism - the latter providing reflection that results in iteration and, thus, once again, a circulation through ideation and materialization.

Relevant debates, however, reveal that the prevailing definitions and practices of compact cities are tied primarily to traditional Western urban forms. This book reinterprets "compact city", and develops a ground-breaking discourse of "Vertical Urbanism", a concept that has never been critically articulated. It highlights the contributions of dozens of international architects, designers and artists, and offers 12 probing, original essays. The projects and essays of UABB 2015, Re-Living the City, criticize the status quo of architecture and urbanism, but they also resist the false dream of designing a perfect city from scratch. Instead, they portray the city as the incremental product of its inhabitants and designers, who provisionally make and remake its fabric through various means at their disposal. Urbanization in the world’s fastest growing regions today has a dual character: officially-sanctioned, large-scale development shadowed by unregulated or ‘informal’ spaces built by disenfranchised migrants. UABB 2015 operates between these poles, seeking alternative paradigms to generate a more sustain- able, equitable, and imaginative urbanity.The principal exhibitions of UABB 2015 include: (1) ‘Radical Urbanism’, curated by Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner (Urban-Think Tank), based on the proposition that the city today is more radical than the architects and planners operating within it; (2) ‘Collage City 3D’, curated by Aaron Betsky, in which artists and architects are asked to create adjacent three-dimensional installations to explore the idea of habitable collage as a mode of urban design; and (3) ‘PRD 2.0’, curated by Doreen Heng Liu, focusing on the need for a more balanced approach to urbanism and architecture in the Pearl River Delta region in southeast China. From Crystal Palace in 1851 to Buckminster Fuller's Spaceship Earth in 1969, nature became enclosed. Claimed to be a reaction of Norbert Wiener's cybernetics, Fuller's geodesic domes became symbols of American counterculture. Yet, from Fuller's description of Spaceship Earth "sea masters," the dome seems to prioritize an environment of occupation inside the dome, over those residing outside--a world of civilized control on its interior and wilderness, war, and wasteland on the other side. Overlapped by cultural consumption and politics, planetary imagination stimulates a useful framework for interrogating the human impact on environmental limitations over a technological foreground. The blurry lines between the engineered logic and cultural imagination are continually embedded and influenced by intuition in the cultural practices of capital enclosure. Theories, design practices, and the forms of imagination, including science fiction, open up critical questions on the status of our environment here on Earth. Resilience, the ability of complex systems to adapt to changing conditions, is a key frontier in ecological research and is especially relevant in creative urban design, as urban areas exemplify complex systems. With something approaching half of the world’s population now residing in coastal urban zones, many of which are vulnerable both to floods originating inland and rising sea levels, making urban areas more robust in the face of environmental threats must be a policy ambition of the highest priority. The complexity of urban areas results from their spatial heterogeneity, their intertwined material and energy fluxes, and the integration of social and natural processes. All of these features can be altered by intentional planning and design. The complex, integrated suite of urban structures and processes together affect the adaptive resilience of urban systems, but also presupposes that planners can intervene in positive ways. As examples accumulate of linkage between sustainability and building/landscape design, such as the Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park and Toronto’s Lower Don River area, this book unites the ideas, data, and insights of ecologists and related scientists with those of urban designers. It aims to integrate a formerly atomized dialog to help both disciplines promote urban resilience.
