Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Spelling Book: Especially Designed for Grades Four, Five, Six, Seven and Eight This book was prepared under authorization of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors for use in the public schools of Milwaukee. It contains work for ten semesters, the words being suited to the comprehension and experience of the child in each half year of his school life in the elementary grades above the third. Each lesson represents a day's work. If the teacher finds that the pupils can do more than is prescribed, he should weave in review words. In addition, he should have pupils copy, at intervals, on the blank pages fol lowing each semester's work, geographical names, proper nouns, abbreviations, and any other words not contained in the book which children are likely to misspell, or to which they need to give particular attention. Dictation lessons should be supplied by the teacher from the reader or from other text-books. Special stress is laid upon the spelling of the plurals of nouns, of participles, and of the past tense forms of verbs; also upon the use of appropriate adjectives and adverbs in connection with words which they modify.
