Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: A Journal for Protestant Chaplain; October, 1962 Christian life rather than striving after moral perfection. This is what Paul meant when he said: The ust shall live by faith. This is what Luther discovered. For a number of years he was a monk and he was a good monk, observing all the rules that would improve his soul. He did his penance; he observed asceticism; he kept all the letters of the church law. Then it suddenly dawned on him: This is not the right way to come to God. This is a dead end, the road of endlessly trying to per fect yourself, to merit heaven, to do bookkeeping before God. Mor al or religious bookkeepers are on the wrong road, he said. The Christian man is the man who simply accepts God's love, knowing that you cannot lay moral claims upon God, saying: I'm this good; you own me this much. God's love is a gift, not something you merit, or work to secure. You accept God's love by faith, not by works. The essence of your Christian religion is gratitude, not striving after moral perfection. Let me bring this home to you as clearly as I can. One of the prob lems of college students is that they think they have perfectionist parents who expect nothing short of the perfect of them - perfect grades, perfect character, perfect prepara tion for their lifework, perfect choice of a wife, perfect success. For a while in their lives this is helpful; it makes them do their best. They feel: I must not let dad down. But there usually comes a crisis in mostof these young lives when they feel the sheer tyranny of this perfection ism. It haunts them. It scares them. They get self-centered. They keep saying to themselves: Perhaps I won't make it. I got a B in Chemis try; I wonder how they'll take that at home. Or Maybe I won't be the success or the good person they expected. Striving, you see, after perfection becomes for them a tyranny rather than a help. Now, what's the way out? To strive harder? No. First of all, such a young person has got to say to him self: This is a dead end. Striving after perfection defeats itself. I'm not becoming better; I'm just becoming self-centered, self-right eous. Then the second thing for such a young person is to go home and discover that his dad and mother love him anyway just as they did before. And this is what makes him a truly good young man: the fact that he is accepted, regard less of his imperfection. Actually no one merits love; we simply re ceive it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: June, 1962 Well, that is a dismal future, and I believe our most effective weapon against it is the kind of joy which Petrarch himself knew with books. If that can be kept alive - and who can imagine it can be obliterated even by the mass-homogenization of our culture - then the future is not lost, and the present has doors into greatness beyond 'itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: April, 1962 It [ritual] is a pattern imposed on the mere flux of our feelings by reason and will, which renders pleas ure less fugitive and griefs more endurable, which hands over to the power of wise custom the task (to which the individual and his moods are so inadequate) of being festive or sober, gay or reverent, when we choose to be, and not at the bidding of chance. It may be that the freedom for which our time searches so frantically will only be recovered when we have learned once more the mystery of discipline: the schooling of mind and body by habit. But whatever the truth of this and whatever our Slant on psychology, we continue to be Creatures of habit. We do things better which we do often. Even so dangerous a beast as the automobile becomes reason ably docile under our habituated skill and we manage to answer mil lions of letters and handle thousands Of personal contacts with relative ease because we can fall back on the cliche and the stereotype, Ref erence is made to our telephone conversation of June We shall look forward to the pleasure of your company. Download or read book The Chaplain Vol 19 written by Chaplains And Armed Forces Personnel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: December, 1962 Religious Education. Chapel construction and other supporting costs, compared to salaries for chaplains, would be in the ratio of, perhaps, four to one. Any proposal to reduce the size and scope of these ministries to the Armed Forces would be av poor reflection of concern for the religious and moral welfare of the personnel, and would be done in the face of vast and increasing amounts spent for weapons. Even if some church leaders felt such a scaling-down were desirable, so that the churches might be able to assume the whole burden them selves, it is not likely that such a decision would be, politically feasible. Nor would there be unanimity among the churches, since not all hold the same View regarding the inter-relation of church and state at such points as this. It Often is erroneously held that only the government contributes to the chaplaincy. Today it is a shared responsibility between church and state. The churches, as a part of their ministry to service per: sonnel, bear the cost of training and recruiting chaplain candidates. Chaplains are no longer recruited directly by the Armed Forces. The denominations provide candidates against a requested quota from each service. There is no Obligation to fill this quota. No man serves without the endorsement of his denomination, and that endorsement may be withdrawn, in effect, terminating the chaplain's eligibility to serve. It is at great loss to the denominational work of the churches that they send so many well-qualified ministers to this cooperative effort. Many feel that it is very appropriate that the government share in this loss to the full extent of the support now given. A very Old line of reasoning says that a man should not be required to bring his own weapon or his own food as he serves in the military today. The government should compensate, and make more efficient pro vision, for these needs. It is argued that the government has an even greater Obligation to supply chaplains as a substitute for the pastoral care available to the military man if he were a civilian. Book Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care in the Twenty First Century written by Wendy Cadge and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Cadge and Shelly Rambo demonstrate the urgent need, highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, to position the long history and practice of chaplaincy within the rapidly changing landscape of American religion and spirituality. This book provides a much-needed road map for training and renewing chaplains across a professional continuum that spans major sectors of American society, including hospitals, prisons, universities, the military, and nursing homes. Written by a team of multidisciplinary experts and drawing on ongoing research at the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab at Brandeis University, Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care in the Twenty-First Century identifies three central competencies—individual, organizational, and meaning-making—that all chaplains must have, and it provides the resources for building those skills. Featuring profiles of working chaplains, the book positions intersectional issues of religious diversity, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other markers of identity as central to the future of chaplaincy as a profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 18: April, 1961 When we turn to the worship of the churches generally known as Reformed, no set forms appear to be either required or employed. Indeed the innumerable varieties of their acts of worship give to an outsider the impression of some confusion and chie y of an absence of meaning. It would appear that many sincere worshipers of this tradition do not care about liturgical order as long as the services are bright and the fellow ship warm, whatever these terms may connote. If one enters a Presby terian, Methodist, Congregational, Baptist, or Christian Church, in all likelihood he will find the various things that are done to be of good quality separately and individually (hymn singing, reading, preaching, etc.) but he will see no discernible shape to the series of acts, and therefore receives a vacant stare when he asks: What is the meaning of all this? And his query prompts us to ask ourselves: What has happened to our Reformed liturgical heritage? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
