Download or read book Memories from the Frontline written by Jerry Palmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses soldiers’ memoirs from the Great War of 1914-18 from Britain, France and Germany. It considers both the authors’ composition of the memoirs and the public response to them. It provides contextual analysis through a survey of the different types of contemporary writing about the Great War, through an analysis of changes in the language used to describe combat, and through an analysis of those people whose accounts of the war were either excluded or marginalised. It also considers the international response to the most successful of the texts. The purpose of the analysis is to show how soldiers’ memoirs contributed to the collective memory of the war and how they influenced public opinion about the war. These texts are both autobiographical and historical and their relationship to the fields of autobiography and historical writing is also considered, as well as to the distinction between fact and fiction.
Download or read book Elsie and Mairi Go to War written by Diane Atkinson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible story of two courageous and spirited women who were the only female participants to serve on the western front during World War I. When they met at a motorcycle club in 1912, Elsie Knocker was a thirty year-old motorcycling divorcee dressed in bottle-green Dunhill leathers, and Mairi Chisholm was a brilliant eighteen-year old mechanic, living at home borrowing tools from her brother. Little did they know, theirs was to become one of the most extraordinary stories of World War I. In 1914, they roared off to London 'to do their bit,' and within a month they were in the thick of things in Belgium driving ambulances to distant military hospitals. Frustrated by the number of men dying of shock in the back of their vehicles, they set up their own first-aid post on the front line in the village of Pervyse, near Ypres, risking their lives working under sniper fire and heavy bombardment for months at a time. As news of their courage and expertise spread, the 'Angels of Pervyse' became celebrities, visited by journalists and photographers as well as royals and VIPs. Glamorous and influential, they were having the time of their lives, and for four years Elsie and Mairi and stayed in Pervyse until they were nearly killed by arsenic gas in the spring of 1918. But returning home and adjusting to peacetime life—and the role of women in British society—was to prove more challenging than even the war itself.

Download or read book Women Writers of the First World War An Annotated Bibliography written by Sharon Ouditt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'They also serve who only stand and wait' The idea of there being a 'women's writing' during the First World War is often dismissed. The war, the story goes, was a masculine domain, and as women did not fight, it is also assumed that they were excluded from a war experience. This bibliography challenges that view by listing and annotating hundreds of published books, articles, memoirs, diaries and letters written by women during the First World War. Included are: * Virginia Woolf * Katherine Mansfield * G.B Stern * Brenda Girvin * known and unknown autobiographers and diarists * writers of pro and anti-war propaganda * journal and magazine articles * literary, cultural and historical criticism

Download or read book First World War Photographers written by Jane Carmichael and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photographs of the First World War offer an extraordinary range of images, and in this book Jane Carmichael draws on her great expertise and knowledge in this area to look at how those photographs came to be taken. She examines the work of the official, press and amateur photographers, and reproduces over 100 photographs from the archive of the Imperial War Museum, one of Britain's great photographic collections. She focuses on the growing use of the photograph as a medium for the masses and as a historical document, making us aware of the operations of propaganda and journalism during the period and enhancing our appreciation of the photographic documents of the war.
